Catching up on my Castle reviews. I like this one. I do like the first chapter better, and might prefer this as a one-shot, but I love the scene with Martha. That's lovely. And the pancakes. So it's hard to decide.

I absolutely loved it. The stuff in parenthesis added so much emotion, and it was all short and simple.

I feel like a complete idiot for not knowing about this glorious piece sooner. You balanced so much emotion in this, particularly the rather oxynmoronic painful relief I know I felt in the aftermath of the episode. But those parenthetical remarks absolutely slayed me. They were, without question, the epitome of perfection.

First off, both chapters are haunting and beautiful. A note though - something in the line "loving ... pays a price" sounds a bit off to me. Should it be "exacts a price"? Or "... you pay a price when..."? Second - the title is a marvelous image. To do some clunky literary analysis, I see it setting the surface, showpiece glory of romantic love against something deeper, a hidden strength. Of course, then I googled it and it's also a game of chance, played with dice, invented by British navy men. Which really works well, too. Are either of those close to your reasons for choosing that title?
