While the story is just fine, I don't think you expressed yourself properly in the author's note. It isn't that religion is subjective (to the contrary, statements about the metaphysical nature of man and the universe are objective if anything is); it's that this is Shmi's account of what happened to her, and you, as the author, decline to either confirm or deny her interpretation. You may want to clarify that.

(Or, of course, you could just recast the story in the first person. Then you wouldn't even need a note, because it would be obvious that what we were reading was subjective interpretation, and that Shmi's reliability as a narratrix was up to us to determine according to our own lights. I think that's what I'd do, in your situation - but it's up to you, of course.)

Your words make me think how hard it must before mothers to raise children they know they'll have to let go before either of them are ready. The glimpses of Shmi's religion are fascinating.

when Shmi described the vigil for the lost I was reminded of the Kaddish, the Jewish funural prayers . Though I can not renember the correct order in which the different karishes are spoken.

Wow-that was fascinating, and almost Tolkien-esque in a great many ways, all of them good. :) I don't think I'll ever stop admiring how you manage to create such depth even out of something as shallow and ten-year-old-friendly as TPM the movie was. What a fascinating and plausible religion for the Tatooine slaves. Exquisite.
