I didn’t realize that anybody would be hitting this page when I started posting my fanfic. Wow, was I wrong! So, out of courtesy I might as well go into more detail than, “I’m a little woman with a big mouth from the Upper South.” Let’s see… I’ve been involved in several fandoms over the years, including Buffydom. I don’t have cable, so I get them as boxed sets and watch most of the series I work with as some would read a book. Personally, I prefer it this way: no commercial interruptions and I can easily go back to an eppie for clarification. Slash doesn’t interest me. Aftermaths, odd little moments and memories do. I prefer to show the unseen, to fill in the blanks. I like writing stories that are the equivalent of sticking your hand into a box of chocolates and getting a live mouse when you were expecting a lime cream. I also find what was not said, what was left out, more intriguing than what was said. Where do I get my source material? Period novels and short stories, pictures, biographies, period movies/television/radio broadcasts, and stories from my older relations. I’ve been told that my writing is either a bizarre hybrid of poetry and prose, or cinematic. How that works or got started, is anybody’s guess. I also take the "expectations meet reality" approach. Spike expects Drusilla to be reasonable in the middle of a crucial transaction. The reality is, she decides to set him on fire because the pixies that live in her shoes told her that he needed to eat more cake. Riley expects the Scoobies to act like a well-oiled machine on patrol. Reality has them bickering, eating potato chips, and falling into open graves - all in the space of five seconds. Other stories I tell from the viewpoint of not the heroes as in the mass of meaty muscles with a ragged headband and an AK-47, the expected, but from the least expected, the old, the crazy, the loser, the invisible, the ones left behind - mainly because there's more of them, and sometimes the invisible people are more interesting than the visible. Anyway, I usually begin with a mental image, and then I let it write itself – sometimes I have a set outcome, other times even I get a surprise. Once the piece is written, I go back and eliminate anything that gets in the way of the story. All my stories are works in progress, so don’t be surprised if you go back to one and find changes. But in the end, I still boil down to the following: “I’m a little woman with a big mouth from the Upper South.” If you’d like to drop me a line, feel free to e-mail me at cdurrill@, or ping me on iChat/AIM as oone@ or MSN Messenger at cdurrill@ |
