Author has written 13 stories for How to Train Your Dragon, Teen Titans, Mega Man, Destiny, and RWBY. I'm Ike, and I used to have no established upload schedule because I am a fickle writer and couldn't be bothered to commit to anything at all. If I wrote a story, it's because the idea was fun and it was all I could think about for anywhere from a week to six months, so I started the story out of it to get it out of my head. That's how my four completed stories, Exodus and Return-us, V for Viking, and Wash It Away, and A Man of No Tribe were written. I don't currently have a project, which means I'm living my best life of using my free time to read other fanfics or play video games. Probably the latter. I'm definitely not spending the time studying like I ought to be. I started off in the How To Train Your Dragon fanfic fandom, where I took a stab at literally the most common premise possible, "protagonist runs away from home." Seriously, like throw a dart at a board with all the HTTYD fics and you'll pick one based on this idea. That, or a self-insert. Oh yeah, I can't stand Song-Fics or Self-Inserts, and I am not fond of OCs. If your whole story is just about OCs set in a fandom's universe, please don't bother me with it. Go write your own book/show/movie and let us write fics for that. Yes, I know that is much harder than I make it seem, such is my contempt for OCs. After my first HTTYD fic ended (I might have lied about the epilogue, but it might still come one day!), I started another because I really enjoyed writing the "protagonist is evil because he couldn't handle his past" arc that my first story ended in (or, as my roommate puts it, I'm a sadomasochist). The story written with this as the premise, V for Viking, is one of my favorite things to have ever done, even if I did piss a few people off. What are you gonna do when the whole flippin fandom hadn't really ever done an 'evil protagonist' thing before, amiright? Some reviewer compared that story to Shindler's List and I'm not sure how I feel about that comparison, but they liked the story, so... From there, I told myself I was done with and was going to get a life. When this failed, I started a Teen Titans fic that, well, stalled is the best way to put it. This was the first time that I realized that a super OP character is not fun to write. Stakes are important to compelling storytelling, and it was also around this time that I really started to take an interest in sharp, well-written plots and heavier themes. I dabbled a little in one-shots for my two favorite video games, and half-heartedly started a shorter story for one of them that really was just meant to be a comedy outing. It has also stalled, although it is more likely to be resumed, as I still have a plot for it. Sorta. Then I had a dark thought about RWBY one-day, and after a few weeks the idea just would not be contained so I wrote a really dark, heart-twisting one-shot. RWBY was the show that made me realize just how compelling dark, complex stories can be. I started watching in the hiatus between Volume 2 and Volume 3, making 3 the first season that I watched as it aired. The Fall of Beacon arc was fantastic, and made me realize that I had an appreciation for darker themes that 'hero saves the day' and 'cool action scene where the good guy wins.' Then at the request of like two people, I wrote a follow-up chapter to that one-shot, and then that was it. Totally did not come up with how that two-shot could expand into a darker, grittier, and more exciting full-story, and I CERTAINLY did not continue writing it. I lied. Wash It Away was a lot of fun, and is certainly something I'm proud of. It was like throwing paint against a wall to make modern art: you didn't really know what you were doing, but somehow, you ended up with a very good product. Okay, so maybe not exactly like modern art, but... I even got recognized by username on reddit one day by a guy who knew me as the author of Wash It Away, which was a very surreal thing. I've since been recognized on a mobile game app for writing MoNT, which was also surreal. I finally tied up A Man of No Tribe, too, which was a ton of fun. One simple premise change - that Jaune was raised by Raven - had such massive implications for the world of RWBY. I enjoyed the hell out of writing that. I have a few random ideas for a new story or a small project, but nothing that has grabbed me the way that A Man of No Tribe or Wash It Away grabbed me and drug me to my writing chair. Maybe that changes soon; wouldn't surprise me. Couer is a great writer who has a very polished style and strict upload schedules, that last part being the most impressive thing you may ever see on . Seriously, Couer cranks out writing like it's nothing and has several fics uploaded weekly, in addition to actually have a job and a life. NTTF is the best work I have ever read on this site. There is a reason Couer Al'Aran is the God-Emperor of RWBY Fanfiction. Also in RWBY, I'd say go ahead and try My Abominable Monster Classmates Can't Be this Cute by Mallobaude. I think I spelled that story name right. Whatever, I just call it "Grimm Girls High" and that is about all you need to hear to know if it is right for you. How To Train Your Dragon: The best thing to do is to set your search settings to Words-Over 100k and Sort-By Favorites or Sort-By Most Reviewed, and go from the top down, reading any story where Hiccup runs away from Berk. Every fandom has that one premise that everyone seems to do a story about, and that is HTTYD's. And it is great. Anything else, I haven't dug through enough yet to really recommend much. |
