Within you, Without you

Disclaimer: Christian (the darling little thing) belongs to that crazy genius Baz Lurhmann, and the song 'Within you, without you' belongs to the Beatles.
Summary: Christian's naïve thoughts about Satine, and his contemplative ones about the Moulin Rouge and its workers.
Author's note: God, I have GOT TO STOP writing these songfics! I'm typecasting myself! WHY WON'T THE MADNESS STOP??????
Satine was due any minute now. He was at his customary position in the window, waiting to see her graceful figure sprinting towards him.
She was late. He was getting nervous.
"We were talking- about the space between us all
And the people- who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth- then it's far too late- when they pass away,"
Christian refused to believe that Satine was like this because she wanted to be. Who would honestly want to live like she did?
To never fall in love. Who could anyone even think like that? The whole prospect made life seem to eminently hopeless and gray and unhappy.
"We were talking- about the love we could share- when we could find it
To try our best to hold it there- with our love
With our love- we could save the world- if they only knew,"
With a smile he remembered Satine's protests.

"Wait . . . no please wait. Before- when we were- when we…when you thought I was the Duke and you said that you loved me. And I-I wondered if-if . . ."
"If it was just an act?"
"Yes!"
"Of course."
"Oh. It just felt real."
"Christian, I'm a courtesan, I'm paid to make men believe what they want to believe."
"Yes . . . silly of me, to think that you could fall in love with someone like me."
"Oh… I can't fall in love with anyone."
"Can't fall in love? But a life without love that's terrible."
"No, being on the streets, that's terrible."

"Try to realize it's all within yourself no-one else can make you change
And to see you're only very small
and life flows on within you and without you,"
How could a person as loving and caring as Satine have even considered a lifetime without love?
He frowned at the thought of the Moulin Rouge. Love was rare. With some more consideration, Christian realized that most of the dancers were hardened in the area of love and had lost their hearts and souls long ago.
"We were talking- about the love that's gone so cold and the people,
Who gain the world and lose their soul-
they don't know- they can't see- are you one of them?"
The Moulin Rouge could one everything they'd always dreamt of: prestige, wealth, fame-for a price.
A heavy price.
Was Satine ever truly one of them? She couldn't have been. She had a soul- a beautiful one!- that Christian was sure of.
But he knew she was tormented by demons Christian could only imagine. Who knew what horrible things Satine had seen?
"When you've beyond yourself- then you may find, peace of mind, is waiting there-
And the time will come when you see,"
But he was there now. And he would never let anything ever hurt her again.
'We're all one, and life flows on within you and without you."
