Something is whining.
Something is whining and Remus doesn't like it. His mostly-asleep mind tries to communicate with his mouth, to get it to say something like, "Effing stop it," but what comes out sounds more like, "Ennghh."
The whining gets louder.
Remus attempts to roll to the other side of the bed, but something is preventing him from doing that. As soon as he moves, the whining escalates to a truly maddening level. Remus does not want to open his eyes and therefore forgo any chance of sleeping through the night, but the whining has become completely impossible to ignore.
Slowly, Remus cracks open one eyelid.
There is something pale and looming directly in front of his face and he yelps, eyes snapping open as his body attempts to recoil.
"Moony!" the thing says, and Remus' mind, still slow from half-sleep, goes through many states of shock and mild horror, wondering how the thing knows his name. But once his eyes have focused and his mind comes out of its near-sleeping state, it becomes very clear why the thing knows his name.
"Sirius, may I ask what the hell you're—"
But just then, Remus feels quivering, and he's pretty sure it's not coming from his own body.
"Moonyyyyy."
Remus sighs. "Get off me. Then you can tell me why you're shaking like a terrified little puppy."
Sirius, miraculously, ignores the insult and rolls off Remus' chest, huddling close to his side, instead. "I had a bad dream," he says.
Remus exhales loudly. He knows more about bad dreams than anyone. Whatever Sirius' dream was, it would probably be like frolicking through a field of daisies compared to one of Remus'.
"Do you want to tell me what it was?"
"Umm. No." Sirius is currently digging a hole in Remus' neck with his nose, but Remus, being used to this, makes no comment.
"So you basically just wanted to come annoy me because it makes you feel better."
"Pretty much." Remus can feel Sirius smiling, and it's strange but oddly comforting.
"…I take it you want to sleep here, then?" says Remus, though he already knows the answer.
Sirius finds one of Remus' hands and twines their fingers together. "Pleeeease?"
Remus can't even see the sad-puppy-dog eyes, but he knows they are there, and they convince him anyway. "Fine. But if you try anything dirty—"
"I'll let you know first," says Sirius, and Remus swears he can see the smirk on Sirius' face, which is crazy because it's completely dark.
"Sure forgot that bad dream fast, didn't you?" says Remus.
"I have a secret: I never really had a bad dream."
"I know." Remus rolls his eyes, but he's smiling. "Good night, you stupid mutt."
"G'night," and Sirius buries his face into Remus' chest and falls asleep.
