Summary: This is something that my fellow friend and writer, Zacksoldier1, challenged me to. I must warn you that I was put on the spot to write about Zack for once so I hope you enjoy. As always, Zack is the property of Square-Enix, but they would never claim this story. Reviews are always welcome, and if it sucks, that's okay; it only took about an hour to write. Please, don't take this fanfic seriously; it's supposed to be pointless fun.
"Splish Splash"
By MakoRain
The peaceful sounds of Enya filled the small room with its calming melodies, effectively soothing the tension that seemed to linger still. Candles lined every available surface and caused a display of dancing shadows with each flicker of flame, merging with the steamy atmosphere to cover the room in a soft blanket of warmth. Zack hummed along softly, fully enjoying the warm bathwater's effect on his aching muscles. The tub was full of bubbles and Zack slid farther into the depths, laying his head on a pillow and sighing as the stress flowed out of him.
If he had not been able to take his daily bubble bath, Zack would have been a less enjoyable fellow and no one wants a cranky Zack, so his bath time was the time to refresh and wash the day away. All that had happened, just recently as well as long ago, left him in the peace of the candlelight and drifting song.
Squeak.
Zack reluctantly opened his eyes to see that his ever faithful rubber ducky had fallen off the edge of the tub to land with a squeak on the floor. The cold stung his arm as he reached out and over the tub, retrieving the pink bath toy. He squeaked it a few more times before letting it sit on the water's surface, lost along the collection of bubbles.
Suddenly, another rubber ducky appeared as if out of nowhere, searching the soap suds for its pink lost companion. With a determined, "I'll save you," the yellow ducky made a beeline for the other and pushed away the bubbles, making it clear again for travel.
"Oh thank you, my hero!" the pink duck replied in a falsetto that hurt Zack's throat slightly, trying to make it obviously a girl duck for the male hero.
"All in a days work," his deeper voice replied before bringing the two ducks together in a wet squeaky kiss.
The two ducks sat together contentedly, and Zack left them to float, happy with this pairing. He made a few waves in the water, moving the couple along to the other side of the tub before resting his head once again on the cushion at his back.
All of a sudden, a cool breeze filled the room, causing the candles to almost go out and producing goose bumps along Zack's arms exposed along the tub's edge. Zack said a lazy "Can I help you?" without opening his eyes and when he heard no response, forced himself out of his quiet zone and into reality. Cloud's eyes threatened to pop out of his head, staring in shock at Zack in his bubble bath, stunned into silence at his best friend.
Unfazed, Zack shifted back into the comfort of the water, ignoring Cloud's gaze and finding his rubber duckies once again.
"If you're just going to stand there, would you mind closing the door? It's getting a bit nippy."
He held a duck in each hand, squeaking them every so often until he heard Cloud ask in awe. "What are you doing?"
"It's very relaxing," he answered logically, secure in his bubble bath and still squeaking his duckies in time to the music.
Zack opened his eyes to see Cloud shake his head bewildered as he turned around and left, closing the door behind him.
"Your loss, Strife."
Warmth once again filled the room as Zack rested in peaceful satisfaction, just him and his ever faithful, understanding duckies.
