Day 367
"Are you still coming over?" Hailey asked as she put her jacket on.
"Of course," Jay said, "Just want to finish some of this up first."
"And you're sure you don't want me to stay and help?" Hailey leaned against Jay's desk.
"Positive," Jay squeezed her knee, "I'll see you in an hour or so."
Hailey smiled, "Okay," she followed Kim and Adam downstairs, glancing behind her to wave at Jay.
Jay waved back and waited for her to leave before reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out the small red box. He sighed and opened it up to look at the diamond ring.
"You said you wanted to talk to me," Hank said while walking out of his office.
Jay looked up, "Uh, yeah," he cleared his throat and closed the box.
"Well, let me see it," Hank smiled and held out his hand.
Jay hesitated and passed him the box.
Hank opened it and nodded, "This your mom's?"
"Yeah," Jay said and stood, "I'd like to give it to Hailey tomorrow night."
Hank handed him back the ring, "Okay."
"And I'd like to ask your permission – your hand? – to marry her," Jay said with a deep breath.
"My permission?" Hank repeated.
Jay nodded, "She respects you more than her own father and frankly you seem to care for her perhaps more than he does, so, may I marry Hailey Upton?"
Hank smiled, "Come here," he walked into his office.
Jay followed and sat in the seat across from the desk.
Hank pulled out a small bottle of whiskey and two glasses before sitting down.
"Why do you want to marry her?" he asked.
Jay swallowed, "Because I love her?"
Hank raised his eyebrows, "Why're you asking me that? Do you or do you not love her?"
"Y-Yeah," Jay played with the box in his hands, "I do. I love her. I love Hailey."
Hank nodded, "Jay-"
"I do!" Jay stood, "She has been by my side from the moment we met. She's watched me do some stupid stuff and she's pulled me out of really deep holes and I'd like to say I've done the same for her. Has it only been a year of dating? Yes, but there is no one else I'd rather spend the rest of my life with than her."
"You done?" Hank asked.
"I…yeah," Jay sat down.
"If I had to handpick a husband for Hailey, he'd have to be someone I trust with my own life," Hank said, "And I trust you. I trust you enough to take over this unit when I'm gone. You're a good cop and a good man. You're like my son. I think choosing Hailey was the best choice you made in a long time."
Jay smiled slightly, "Thank you."
Hank poured the whiskey into two glasses, "I'm proud of you." He passed one glass to Jay and held up his own, "Congratulations."
Jay tapped his glass against Hank's before drinking from it.
Hank slowly drank his own before saying, "I'll pay for it."
Jay's eyes widened, "What?"
"I'm paying for your wedding," Hank repeated.
"You don't have to do that," Jay shook his head, "I have money."
"You said it yourself, her dad isn't the best, so it's not like he's going to help pay for this," Hank said and set his glass on his desk, "I want to help."
Jay breathed out in disbelief, "Wow, thank you."
"You keep saying that," Hank chuckled, "You should go though," he nodded to the door, "Enjoy your last night as a boyfriend before everything changes."
Jay smiled slightly and nodded, "Will do," he stood and held his hand out, "Again, thank you…for everything."
Hank nodded and shook his hand, "You two deserve it."
Jay smiled and left, driving to Hailey's apartment to spend the last night of this chapter of their relationship together.
Day 1
Hailey laid against Jay's chest in her bed and played with his fingers, "Do we have to go to work?"
Jay chuckled and rubbed her back, "You want to take a day off?"
"Yes," Hailey smiled and looked up at him, "I just want to stay here with you."
Jay kissed her head, "So you're not sick of me?"
"Never," Hailey laughed.
Jay looked in her eyes and smiled softly, "I'll be right back," he slipped out of bed and grabbed his clothes. Hailey watched as he got dressed and walked out of the room, yelling, "Take the day off!" as he left.
Hailey laughed and grabbed her phone. She called the district and waited for the phone to pick up.
"Hello?" Trudy answered.
"Hey! It's Hailey," Hailey smiled, "Can Jay and I take today off?"
"That's one way to do it," Trudy sighed, "Why?"
"I-we…we just need a day," Hailey said.
She heard Trudy move the phone and say, "Hank. Halstead and Upton. You fine if they use a sick day?" Hailey didn't hear the answer, but then Trudy adjusted the phone and said in a much happier tone, "All set!"
"That easy?" Hailey asked, fully expecting to be interrogated.
"Yup," Trudy said, "See you tomorrow." She hung up faster than Hailey could, so Hailey slowly set her phone back on her nightstand.
Jay walked back in the room, slightly out of breath, "Do we have the day off?"
"Yeah, you okay?" Hailey moved to sit on the edge of the bed, "Come here."
Jay swallowed and walked forward.
Hailey took his hands and smiled, "Are you nervous about spending the day with me?" she laughed, "You're looking a little weird," she reached up and felt his forehead.
"I'm fine," Jay said softly and knelt in front of her, "I'm better than fine; I'm really, really good, Hailey."
"Good," she smiled lightly and ran her hand over his hair, "What should we do today? The weather's so nice, I was thinking maybe a beach day?"
"We can do that," Jay nodded, "But I'd really like to talk about something first."
"Okay," Hailey said.
Jay took a deep breath and nervously laughed, "Um," he cleared his throat, "I love you, Hailey, I really, truly do. I have never felt happier or more complete than when I'm with you. You have walked through life with me the past few years as a partner and as a friend and having you as more than that this past year has been…incredible."
Hailey swallowed and nodded, "I-I love you too."
"And I want to marry you," Jay whispered, "Hailey, I want you to be my wife, but even more than that, I want to be your husband. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. We are perfect together, like two puzzle pieces," he laughed a little, "God, that was lame," he rested his head on her knees.
"It wasn't lame," Hailey laughed through her tears and squeezed his shoulders, "You're doing good."
Jay chuckled and looked up, "What I'm trying to ask," he grabbed the red ring box from his pocket and opened it to show her, "Is will you marry me, Hailey Anne?"
Hailey nodded quickly and laughed, "Yes, yes I will marry you."
Jay smiled and put the ring on her finger before standing and kissing her, "I love you," he whispered.
"I love you too," she said softly.
Jay pushed her back on the bed and hovered over her, "We're getting married."
"We're getting married," Hailey repeated and put her hands on either side of his face.
Jay smiled and kissed her again.
Hailey softly pulled back and looked at the ring, "Jay, this is perfect."
"It was my mom's," he said quietly and looked at it, "I'm glad I was able to give it to you."
Hailey leaned up and kissed him lightly, "Thank you."
"Still want to go to the beach?" Jay asked.
Hailey laughed softly, "Maybe we can stay home for a little longer," she kissed him again.
He smiled against her lips, "I was hoping you'd say that."
Hailey passed Jay a towel, "Let me put more sunscreen on you too." She sat on the blanket under the umbrella and tried her hair.
"That's fine," Jay wrapped the towel around his shoulders and sat next to her.
Hailey gently set her head on his shoulder, "I can't wait to marry you."
"Yeah?" Jay kissed her head.
"Like you said, we just work," Hailey said softly. She sat up and grabbed the sunscreen, slipping off his towel and rubbing the lotion into his back, "I never really imagined a huge wedding for myself anyways."
"What did you picture?" Jay asked.
"Just me and the guy together, really," Hailey shrugged, "I'd be wearing white, but I never pictured a huge crowd or party. Did you?"
"I really only pictured you," Jay said.
Hailey smiled and kissed the back of his neck, "Are you just sucking up to me?"
Jay laughed, "I'm not. I'm with you, I honestly have never imagined having a giant wedding. I've known that I want to get married, but not in a way that's over the top and draws a ton of attention. If that's what you want though, I'd gladly give you that."
Hailey laughed softly and shook her head, "I don't. Honestly, an extended weekend with you in Vegas doesn't sound like the worst thing right now. I'd love a mini vacation."
Jay chuckled and stuck his hands in the sand, "A Vegas wedding. My dad would roll over in his grave."
"Mine would definitely not approve either," Hailey smiled and wiped her hands on the towel. She moved back to sit next to Jay, "Your back should be good now."
"Thanks," Jay said and kissed her cheek.
Hailey stared out at the water, "Do you want to?"
"Go to Vegas?" Jay asked.
"Yeah," Hailey said softly, "I don't really need my parents there. I just need you."
Jay brushed the sand off his hands with the towel and reached for the bag Hailey'd brought. He grabbed his phone and after a few minutes said, "There are tickets available to fly there next weekend."
Hailey looked at him, "Are you serious?"
Jay nodded and showed her his screen, "Hailey, why not?"
She bit her lip over a smile, "I…I don't know."
"Is it too crazy?" Jay asked.
"We've been engaged for like four hours and only dated for a year, it's crazy," Hailey laughed, "But if I'm doing crazy, I'll do crazy with you."
Jay smiled, "Let's just do it then."
Hailey crawled to the bag and grabbed her wallet, "You can pay with my card."
Jay took it from her and laughed, "Sorry, Dad," he whispered while typing the card number into his phone.
Day 2
Jay pulled into the parking lot just after 7am.
Hailey looked around, "First one's here."
"That's good because if Voight yells at us for flying to Vegas, no one will hear," Jay said while getting out of the truck.
Hailey laughed, "You're exaggerating."
"Am I?" Jay asked and took Hailey's hand as they walked inside.
They made their way upstairs to the bullpen and saw Hank sitting in his office.
Jay took a deep breath and led the way to the small room, "Hi Sarge."
Hank looked up, "Hey," he stood, "What're you two doing here so early?"
Hailey laughed, "Like you don't know," she held her hand out to show him the ring, "We're engaged."
Hank smiled and hugged her tightly, "Congratulations, I'm really happy for you both," he stepped back and shook Jay's hand.
"Thanks," Jay said and took a deep breath, "We wanted to talk to you about it actually."
Hank nodded and sat down, "Whatever you want."
Hailey glanced at Jay, "We were thinking of going to Vegas."
Hank raised his eyebrows, "As in Las Vegas? Why would you go there?"
"So we could get married soon and not have to worry about planning anything," Jay said, casually stepping behind Hailey.
"We booked tickets yesterday to fly out next Friday," Hailey nodded.
Hank blinked before sighing and shaking his head, "That's so classless. You're telling me the two people I've watched grow up in this unit and consider my family are flying to Las Vegas next weekend to get married? When Jay asked for your hand, I at least expected to be present at the ceremony. I told him without question I'm up for footing the bill, but I'm putting my foot down at the idea of flying this unit to Vegas to watch an Elvis impersonator marry you two. No, we're doing this right."
Hailey looked back at Jay, "You asked him for my hand?"
"I…yeah," Jay blushed.
Hailey bit her lip and looked back at Hank, "I don't know what to say."
Hank stood, "You don't have to say anything, Hailey, you know you're like a daughter to me. I just want this done right for you. Get married here with us."
Hailey slightly nodded, "Okay," she looked at Jay, "Is that okay?"
"Of course that's okay," Jay said softly, "I told you yesterday, whatever you want."
"But it's your wedding too," Hailey said.
"And Will will prefer if I get married here anyways," Jay smirked, "It's okay."
Hailey turned back to Hank, "Nothing big though."
Hank shrugged, "Fine."
"And the sooner the better," Hailey added.
Hank looked at his calendar, "You were going to Vegas next Friday? Let's make it that Saturday. 12 days from now."
Jay smiled, "Perfect."
"You want to tell them yet?" Hank nodded behind them where the others were coming upstairs together.
Hailey nodded and walked out of the office, "Hey-"
"How was your day off?" Vanessa teased with a wink, "Relax a lot?"
Hailey laughed and shoved her lightly, "Shut it."
"Hey, what'd you got on your hand, Ms. Upton?" Kevin asked and walked over smirking.
"Oh this?" Hailey looked at her left hand, "It's nothing too important."
"What the hell?" Kim laughed and stood next to her, "Oh my god!"
"We're getting married," Hailey said with a smile.
Adam clapped Jay on the back, "Congratulations, man."
Vanessa hugged Hailey tightly, "Oh my gosh! You're getting married!"
Kim walked around Hailey to hug Jay, "I'm so happy for you," she said softly and smiled, "You deserve this."
Kevin wrapped his arms around both of them, "Congrats you two."
Hank stepped out of his office and smiled, "We have 12 days to plan the wedding, you four up to it?"
"You're kidding, he's kidding, right?" Kim looked at Hailey.
Hailey slowly shook his head, "He's not kidding."
"You are out of your mind," Kim said.
"We really don't want anything big," Hailey said.
"Yeah, as long as you're all there and my brother," Jay shrugged, "We're good."
"So a wedding with six guests, seven if Platt's coming," Adam nodded, "That's not horrible."
"Platt's coming," Trudy said while walking upstairs, "Congratulations you two."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled.
"I'll officiate," Trudy added.
"What?" Jay laughed.
"There's no way you're a priest," Adam said.
"You're right, I'm not," Trudy rolled her eyes, "At least you're pretty."
Hailey laughed, "I mean…go for it," she looked at Jay, "Is that okay?"
"I told you, as long as you're happy," Jay said.
"Wow," Kim nodded and looked at Hailey, "Keep him."
Hailey smiled, "That's the plan," she held up her ring.
Day 3
"Hailey, get in here," Kim said from the break-room.
Hailey walked over, "What's up?"
Vanessa held up two bridal magazines, "Look what we bought!"
"We don't want something huge," Hailey laughed and leaned against the door.
"But come on, we're still planning something!" Kim said, "Like…flowers!" she opened a magazine and pointed to a page, "What bouquet are you going to carry down the aisle?"
Hailey bit her lip and stepped forward.
"That's it," Vanessa smiled, "Come on, join us on the dark side, plan your wedding."
Hailey laughed softly and sat at the table, "Pass it here."
Kim smiled and passed her the magazine.
Hailey took a deep breath and looked at the pages. She chewed her lip, "I don't even know where I'm going to get married, how do I pick the flowers?"
"Okay, that's not a problem," Vanessa said and squeezed her hand, "Let's plan that then."
Hailey looked through the door, "Jay's not here."
"Hey, deep breath," Kim smiled, "He said he didn't care, but if you do want to wait for him, we can do that."
Vanessa nodded, "He's just getting lunch, he'll be back soon."
"No, no, I'm okay," Hailey tried to smile, "I can do this."
"If you're sure," Kim nodded.
Trudy walked in the room, "How's it going?"
"It's going," Vanessa smiled and rubbed Hailey's arm.
"Nervous?" Trudy asked and sat on the couch.
"I don't know," Hailey groaned and ran a hand through her hair, "I don't know what I can do without Jay."
"You can control yourself," Kim said, "So what about your dress or bridesmaids?"
Hailey laughed softly, "You really think you two aren't my bridesmaids?"
Vanessa squealed quietly, "I knew it," she hugged Hailey tightly, "Thank you."
Hailey laughed, "You're welcome." She looked at Trudy, "You're still officiating?"
"Obviously," Trudy smiled.
"See? You can do this," Kim said.
Hailey breathed out and nodded, "Yeah," she smiled, "I've got this."
Vanessa clasped her hands together, "Here we go. Upstead wedding is a go."
Hailey laughed, "Don't call us that."
"But it's cute," Kim laughed, "We'll use that for your hashtag."
"Oh my gosh," Hailey shook her head and smiled.
Jay got in Kevin's car with a bag of subs, "I'm the one getting married, and yet you turds made me pay for lunch."
"Playing the wedding card," Adam shook his head and laughed.
"And he's just been engaged for what three days," Kevin chuckled and started driving.
Jay rolled his eyes, "Whatever," he smirked.
"Kim's excited though," Adam said, "Kinda makes me feel guilty."
Kevin looked back at him through the mirror, "Are you two gonna get back together?"
"We're something," Adam shrugged.
"Do you two want to be groomsmen?" Jay asked.
Kevin smiled and lightly hit his arm, "I'd be honored."
Adam nodded, "Of course. You're our friend," he reached forward and squeezed Jay's shoulder, "She's our friend too."
"Ever think about you two slept with the same girl?" Kevin asked.
"All right, get out," Jay shoved him.
"I'm the driver," Kevin smirked.
"And you're a sick man," Adam said.
Jay nodded, "Talking about my wife like that."
Kevin looked at him, "Already saying it. We always knew you two worked together."
Adam nodded, "Truly, Jay, we've known you forever and when you're with her, don't take this a weird way, but you just seem happier."
"Like she completes you," Kevin added.
"Thanks," Jay said, "I actually said that when I proposed."
"Let's hear it," Adam chuckled, "Propose to us."
"No," Jay shook his head, "It was lame."
"Oh, now you need to share," Kevin smirked, "Come on, propose. Make us marry you."
"What makes a lady say 'yes' to Jay Halstead?" Adam laughed.
Jay sighed, "I told her we were like puzzle pieces," he mumbled.
"That's good," Kevin laughed and nodded, "Love that."
"Did she cry?" Adam asked.
"Yeah, she did cry," Jay said.
"Nice, your missing puzzle piece was touched," Adam teased.
"You two suck," Jay laughed.
Day 4
Jay walked in Hailey's condo, "Hails?"
"Coming," she yelled from in her room.
Jay set his wallet and keys on the table by the door and slipped off his shoes before going to the kitchen to grab a beer.
Hailey walked in behind him, "How was Will?"
Jay turned with two bottles in his hands, "Hey babe, I'm great, how're you? Do anything since I last saw you."
Hailey rolled her eyes and smiled, "Hi Jay," she took one of the beers from his hands and lightly kissed his cheek.
Jay chuckled and walked with her to the living room, "Will was fine. I now have a best man."
"Congrats," Hailey said and plopped down on the couch, "I don't have a maid of honor and I think I'm okay with that."
"Yeah?" Jay sat next to her and opened his bottle.
Hailey shrugged and held her bottle out. Once Jay opened it, she slowly drank from it, "Vanessa and Kim are equal to me. They're really all I need."
Jay nodded, "Fine by me."
Hailey turned to the side and pulled her feet up on the couch to rest next to Jay's legs, "You're actually good with the park wedding, right? You weren't just saying that to get Kim off your back?"
Jay laughed and shook his head, "I actually want to get married in the park. It's June and it should be nice weather. Plus, I like how your hair looks when it's windy."
Hailey blushed and lightly kicked his side, "Shush."
"It's the truth," Jay smirked and drank his beer.
"Should I invite my parents?" Hailey asked softly, "And please don't say it's up to me. I want your opinion."
Jay blew out his breath, "You know how I feel about them."
Hailey nodded, "I do."
"I still have a hard time looking at him without wanting to hurt him," Jay mumbled.
Hailey shook her head and drank from her bottle.
"I know you don't want me to say it, but the truth is, Hailey, they are your parents," Jay said.
"And it's our wedding," Hailey countered.
"All right, let's just think of it from all perspectives," Jay said, "Why would you want them to be there?"
Hailey thought while drinking her beer before finally saying, "Tradition."
Jay slowly nodded, "Okay, what part?"
Hailey blushed, "Don't judge me, please."
Jay set his beer down, "Hailey."
She put her hands up, "I'm just saying…please."
"I won't," Jay said.
"I want someone to walk me down the aisle," Hailey said quietly.
Jay smiled, "There's nothing wrong with that."
"Are you sure?" Hailey asked, "Because I'm a grown woman and I'm not someone's property."
"Then problem solved," Jay said, "Don't have your dad walk you down the aisle."
"But I want that," Hailey sighed, "I want to have everyone watch me and I want someone to say, 'Yes, Jay, you can marry this woman because she's amazing.'"
Jay laughed, "I don't know what to say to you then."
"I thought a short engagement was supposed to make this all easier," Hailey groaned.
"Well, I asked Voight for your hand," Jay said.
Hailey smiled a little and sat up, "Why'd you pick him anyways?"
"Because I know you respect him and he looks at you like a daughter," Jay shrugged.
Hailey nodded and grabbed her phone. Jay watched her dial a number and walk in the kitchen, "Hank?" she asked.
Jay smiled and finished his beer. He turned the TV on and pulled the blanket over himself.
Hailey came back a few minutes later and sat next to Jay, "Figured it out."
"Yeah?" Jay smiled and set the blanket over her.
"Voight said he'll walk me down the aisle," Hailey said and cuddled close to Jay.
He wrapped his arm around her and kissed the top of her head, "I'm glad."
"And I feel good about not inviting my parents now," Hailey breathed.
Jay rubbed her arm, "Good."
"It's coming together," Hailey smiled up at him.
"I know," Jay chuckled, "Did you buy a dress yet?"
Hailey's smile fell, "No."
"You'll find one," Jay said, "Anything you want me to wear?"
Hailey shrugged, "I have no clue."
Jay smiled, "Well, when you figure it out, let me know."
Hailey laughed and shook her head, "You could always pick yourself."
"Fine, then I'm not wearing a suit," Jay stated.
Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Are you serious?"
"It's going to be hot," Jay said, "Got a problem with that?" he smirked.
"I…no," Hailey said, "That's fine."
Jay chuckled and held her close, "Perfect."
Day 5
"I feel so ugly," Hailey said through the changing room door.
"You're not ugly," Kim said.
Vanessa nodded, "You're super cute and very hot."
Hailey sighed and opened the door, "It's not me."
"Um," Kim crossed her arms and looked over the ballgown, "Yeah, it's not right for you."
"But you're not ugly," Vanessa quickly said.
Hailey smiled a little and played with the dress, "Next one?"
"Yes," Kim and Vanessa said at the same time.
Hailey tried on two more dresses before whispering, "Oh my god."
"What?" Vanessa asked and knocked on the door, "Did the zipper get stuck?"
Hailey swallowed, "No."
"Is it a good dress or a bad one?" Kim asked.
Hailey opened the door and laughed through tears in her eyes, "What's my problem?"
Vanessa covered her mouth and grabbed Hailey's hand to pull her further out of the room.
Kim walked around her, "Damn, Hailey."
Hailey laughed and looked in the mirror, "What do you think?" she smoothed her hands down her front and turned to the side.
Vanessa lightly touched her side, "Wow, you look amazing."
Kim nodded, "It looks so flowy."
"It fit like a glove," Hailey breathed.
"You can totally tell," Vanessa said.
"And it sparkles!" Kim gasped, "Holy crap Hailey, this was made for you."
Hailey laughed and wiped her eyes, "I love it."
"You're crying," Vanessa hugged her, "Oh you need to get it."
Hailey nodded, "I think I will."
Kim looked at the tag, "It's your lucky day cause this was the cheap one."
"Thank god," Hailey whispered and continued looking at herself in the mirror.
"You told your fiancé that you're not wearing a suit at your wedding?" Adam repeated.
"Yup," Jay said and drank his beer.
"And you're alive to tell the tale," Kevin shook his head.
"It's not a big deal," Jay laughed, "We're getting married in a park anyways."
"You're still getting married, not going on a first date," Adam said.
"Do either of you want to wear a suit outside in the middle of June?" Jay asked.
"It's not our wedding though, so our opinion doesn't count," Kevin shrugged.
"Maybe you need to go to wedding school," Adam smirked.
Jay shook his head, "You two are ridiculous."
"Let's just ask the pretty bride-to-be herself," Kevin said and stood from the bar, "Upton!" he waved the girls over.
Hailey smiled and led Kim and Vanessa to them, "Hey!"
"We were just talking about you," Adam chuckled and wrapped an arm around Hailey's shoulders.
"Cool it," Jay said and lightly shoved Adam's arm away.
"Hey," Adam held his hands up, "You're the one with the cool girlfriend who's fine with you not wearing a suit on your own wedding."
"What?" Kim asked, "Hailey, that's not true."
"I…" Hailey took a deep breath before walking down the bar and ordering herself a beer.
"Dumbass," Jay shook his head and followed Hailey, "Hails."
Hailey sat and drank from the bottle, "Jay."
"You said you were fine if I didn't wear a suit," Jay said and sat next to her.
"I did," Hailey nodded.
"Then what's happening right now?" Jay asked.
"I feel like a joke," Hailey said softly.
"You're not a joke," Jay rubbed her arm.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with a casual wedding," Hailey continued, "I don't want to be shamed for it."
"No one is shaming you," Jay shook his head.
Hailey raised her eyebrows and nodded back to their friends.
"They're not getting married," Jay whispered, "We are. Screw them."
Hailey rubbed her face, "I guess."
"I'll wear a suit if you want me to…hot weather and all," Jay smiled a little.
Hailey laughed and shook her head, "That'd look a little silly next to my dress."
"You bought a dress today?" Jay smiled, "Can I see?"
"Not at all," Hailey smiled back and brushed a hand over his cheek, "That's going to be kept secret until our wedding."
"Fair," Jay grabbed her hand and kissed her wrist, "But I'm guessing it's casual?"
"I wouldn't say casual, like it's definitely a wedding dress," Hailey shrugged, "But it's not like Kardashian or princess level fancy."
Jay smiled, "Good. I'm marrying a cop, not some overrated celebrity." He leaned forward and kissed her softly.
Hailey smiled against him, "I love you."
"Love you too," Jay mumbled and kissed her jaw.
"If you're going to just make out all night, get a room," Vanessa called down the bar.
Jay chuckled and pulled away, resting his forehead on Hailey's shoulder.
Hailey looked over and held up her middle finger, smirking.
Vanessa laughed and blew her a kiss.
Hailey blew one back, laughing. She kissed the side of Jay's head, "Come on, let's join them for this one drink before heading home."
Day 6
"This is hands down the best part of getting married," Jay said through a mouthful of cake.
Hailey laughed and shook her head, "Don't be gross."
Jay chuckled and took another bite of the chocolate cake in front of him, "We have to get this one."
"But I thought you liked the white chocolate cake with the blueberry filling," Hailey said.
"Why can't we get both?" Jay asked.
"Because we're not made of money," Hailey hissed.
Jay raised his eyebrows and swallowed, "Voight offered to pay."
"We are not exploiting our boss for money," Hailey shook her head.
"He offered!" Jay said, "Come on, Hails, a cake benefits everyone involved."
Hailey bit her lip and looked at the tray of sample cakes in front of them, "I guess it wasn't that much more expensive to have two types of cake."
"Exactly," Jay nodded, "We can do one layer of chocolate, one blueberry, and then one with that vanilla buttercream."
"That's three layers!" Hailey exclaimed.
"A two layer cake is super lame," Jay said.
Hailey laughed and sat back, crossing her arms, "You're crazy."
"I'm hungry," Jay took another bite of the lemon cake.
"You didn't like that one," Hailey mumbled.
"I really don't care," Jay said and held his fork to her mouth, "Come on, take a bite, enjoy yourself."
Hailey stared at him before laughing and biting the cake off his fork, "Fine."
Jay smiled, "That's my girl."
Hailey blushed and shook her head, sipping her water.
"What?" Jay smirked.
Hailey looked down and swirled her finger on Jay's thigh, "When you call me that…I like it."
"I've always said that to you," Jay smiled, "Are you telling me you've thought it was – dare I say? – attractive for the last few years? Even before we were dating? Hailey Anne."
Hailey laughed softly, "Stop."
Jay chuckled and tilted her chin up, "You've always been my girl," he set his hand on her knee, "Right?"
Hailey bit her lip over a smile, "Yeah."
Jay smiled back and kissed her, "Yeah," he repeated under his breath, "Mine."
Day 7
As Jay and Hailey walked up the stairs together to work, they noticed Kim and Adam whispering to each other before quickly darting away when they themselves noticed Hailey and Jay.
"Good morning," Jay said slowly.
Adam nodded, "Morning. Sleep well?"
"Don't be gross," Jay shook his head while walking to his desk.
Hailey laughed softly and went into the break room.
Kim followed her and closed the door, "Hey."
Hailey looked up and raised her eyebrows, "Hey."
"Can we talk?" Kim asked.
"Um," Hailey looked around at the empty room, "Yeah?"
"Cool," Kim sat at the table.
Hailey started the pot of coffee before sitting next to her, "What's up?"
"For the next few minutes, don't take much offense to what I'm saying and know that I still love you, but I'm just talking on behalf of…people," Kim said.
"You're scaring me," Hailey smirked.
Kim sighed, "Listen," she put her hands on the table, "I've known Jay for a long time, longer than you…if we're being honest."
"We clearly are," Hailey crossed her arms.
"I care about him a lot, we all do," Kim continued, "And I just feel like I should say, as your friend, please do not break his heart. He's a really good guy and he deserves happiness."
Hailey hesitated before putting her arms down on her lap, "I agree."
Kim nodded and smiled a little, "Good, great, um, okay, so yeah…" she chewed her lip before saying, "I'll kick your ass."
Hailey burst into laughter, "Oh my god, Kim."
Kim blushed, "What?"
"You're going to kick my ass?" Hailey repeated, "I thought we were friends!"
"We are!" Kim said, turning a brighter red, "I just wasn't sure what to say!"
"Don't ever threaten to kick my ass," Hailey laughed harder and stood to pour herself coffee.
Kim glanced toward the door, "Don't get me fired."
Hailey shook her head and held back from laughing again.
Back in the bullpen, Adam eyed the door and noticed that Hailey had stood to pour coffee. He knew he needed to act fast before she came out, so he walked over to Jay's desk, "We need to talk."
Jay looked up from his email, "Are you breaking up with me? Let me go tell my fiancé so we can re-plan the wedding."
Adam rolled his eyes, "Very funny. No, this is serious."
Jay chuckled, "Okay, shoot."
"I will shoot you if you hurt her," Adam blurted.
Jay's eyes widened, "Excuse me?" he stood up.
"I-I-no," Adam backed up, "That's not what I meant," he ran into Hailey's chair.
"Then what'd you mean?" Jay asked, walking forward, "Say it now that we're face-to-face."
"I-" Adam stumbled as he walked around Kevin's desk to guard himself, "I just want to tell you not to hurt Hailey-"
"Do you think I'll hurt Hailey?" Jay asked, moving Kevin's chair out of the way, "Do you think I'm some animal who beats women?"
"Of course not!" Adam said and walked toward the stairs.
"Then please enlighten me with what you're trying to say," Jay said.
"Hey, listen, she's a wonderful woman, it's an honor to consider her an ex-girlfriend," Adam winced at his own words and backed into the wall.
Jay stood in front of him, "Don't talk about her like that."
"Halstead," Hank barked from his office door, "Back off. Ruzek, I'd shut my mouth if I were you."
Hailey and Kim stepped out of the break room.
"What's going on?" Hailey asked.
Jay glared at Adam before retreating to his desk, "Nothing."
Kim shook her head and walked to her own desk, whispering, "You said you could handle Jay," as she passed Adam.
"I was clearly wrong," Adam hissed back.
Purely for his own amusement, Hank told Adam and Jay to ride with him on their way to an offender's house an hour later.
"I'd say 'shotgun,' but I don't want to be threatened with one," Jay mumbled as he sat in the backseat of Hank's car.
"Oh my god," Adam mumbled and sat in the passenger seat.
Hank chuckled and started driving.
After a minute, Jay said, "You have some balls to tell me not to hurt her."
"It's a gesture!" Adam turned in his seat, "She means a lot to me-"
"Don't say that," Hank shook his head.
Adam sighed and rubbed his face, "She's a good girl, Jay, and we all care about her-"
"Better," Hank said under his breath.
"And I'm just trying to say…take care of her," Adam softened, "I know you will, but we're all here too and you're both important to us and if you ever need anything, we're hear for you."
"You're making no sense," Jay whispered and stared out the window.
"For god's sake, Halstead," Hank snapped, "No one is calling you a terrible person. He's trying to be there for Hailey like her own family isn't. I'd like to add my two cents and agree; if you dare break her heart, you will be sorry."
Jay glanced up at him and nodded slightly.
"And before you pout," Hank continued, "I hope you realize that if she ever hurts you, the same goes for her."
"I know," Jay said quietly.
"Are we good?" Adam asked.
Jay looked at him and smirked, "You're so stupid."
"I am not," Adam breathed and looked at Hank, "Boss."
Jay smirked and reached forward to lightly punch his arm, "We're good, little brother."
Adam chuckled, "You know, it's gross if you say that since-"
"Shut up," Jay and Hank said at the same time.
Day 8
Hailey sat frozen in Vanessa's car.
"It's okay," Vanessa said and started opening her door only for the wind to take it from her hands.
"Getting married in the park was the stupidest idea I've ever had," Hailey whispered.
"Technically it was Kim's idea," Vanessa said and stepped out of the car, "Let's go."
Hailey groaned and hesitantly stood from the car.
Vanessa spit her hair out of her mouth, "It's really not that bad."
Hailey rolled her eyes and quickly pulled her hair up in a ponytail, "It's like a tornado."
"It is called the windy city," Vanessa said, "Come on," she started walking down a path toward an open area.
Hailey sighed and put her hands in her pockets as she followed her.
"Wouldn't this spot be pretty?" Vanessa smiled and gestured to the open grass.
Hailey looked around and nodded, "It's not bad."
"You can even see the water," Vanessa pointed, "We can make this work, Hailey."
"I'm not against the physical spot," Hailey said and tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear, "I'm against the weather."
Vanessa took her phone out and opened her weather app, "The weather's going to be fine."
"Are you using the free app or did you buy one?" Hailey asked.
"The free one, but it's fine!" Vanessa said.
Hailey bit her lip, "I don't know. Do we still have time to change venues? Or maybe Jay and I really should just fly to Vegas for a night."
"Do you really want that though?" Vanessa asked softly.
Hailey cupped her hand around her ear and stepped toward her, "Sorry, what'd you say? I couldn't hear you over the wind."
Vanessa smirked lightly and said louder, "Do you really want that? Vegas?"
Hailey sighed and looked around, "No," she breathed.
Vanessa couldn't hear her, but she understood. She reached out and squeezed Hailey's hand. "Coffee?" she asked.
Hailey nodded and they walked back to the car.
Vanessa passed Hailey a cup of coffee, "Feel better?"
Hailey smiled a little, "Thank you. Yeah, I feel fine."
"Fine isn't necessarily better," Vanessa said as she sat down.
"I just want this to be perfect," Hailey whispered.
Vanessa nodded, "There's nothing wrong with that and I'm sure that's normal. You're allowed to be a control freak with your wedding."
Hailey laughed and shook her head, "I never wanted to be a bridezilla."
"Oh you're not bridezilla level yet," Vanessa laughed.
Hailey smiled and stirred her coffee slowly, "Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment."
Vanessa smiled back and sipped her own drink, "You're welcome. You know, I look up to you."
"Yeah?" Hailey asked.
Vanessa nodded, "And not just as a cop, but also as a person. You're just good overall."
"I've made some bad choices," Hailey shook her head.
"Everyone does," Vanessa countered, "But your good choices have far outweighed any mistakes you've made. You are incredibly kind and have a huge heart. Jay will certainly be lucky to call you his wife in a few days and we're all lucky to call you our friend and co-worker."
Hailey smiled and blushed, "Thank you."
"It's all going to work out," Vanessa said, "You just have to believe that it will. Once you get through the wedding, you two have the rest of your lives ahead of you to do whatever you want. You can travel, you can have kids, you could be dog parents, maybe you guys can get promoted and run the unit, or –"
"Knock it off," Hailey laughed and shook her head, "You're talking way far into the future now."
Vanessa smiled, "I'm just saying, your wedding is one day, you're going to have an infinite amount of days with Jay after this, don't stress about this one Saturday."
"You're right," Hailey sipped her coffee, "I can do this. We can do this. It's one day."
Day 9
"I can't do this," Jay said while following Will through the Emergency Department, "Who was I thinking I could be a husband?" he lightly rubbed his bruised ribs.
"You know, you're getting married in four days, this is pretty last minute," Will said and set the chart he was carrying on a desk, "Come here," he led Jay to an empty room and pointed to the bed, "Sit."
Jay sat and sighed as Will grabbed at his shirt, "This is stupid, you don't need to check me out. Nothing's broken. I have bigger problems right now."
"Then please tell me why your fiancé – yeah, I said it – dropped you off at the door in a panic," Will raised his eyebrow.
Jay shook his head, "I…I," he sighed and put his head in his hands, "I kinda got hit by a bike, nothing huge."
Will rolled his eyes and helped Jay get his shirt off, "You're an idiot." He put gloves on, "Tell me if it hurts," he gently prodded his stomach.
Jay stared at the wall and let Will look him over, "You're being overprotective."
Will snorted and ignored the comment.
"But seriously, I don't think I should get married, I get hurt too much," Jay mumbled.
"Then stop getting hurt, dumbass," Will straightened up, "Did you hit your head?"
"No," Jay pulled away as Will reached for his face, "Back off."
"You're being difficult. Should I get Natalie so she can treat you like a child?" Will asked.
Jay shook his head in annoyance.
"Thought so," Will smirked and grabbed Jay's chin to shine a light in his eyes and check for a concussion.
Jay waited until Will put the light away to blink and rub his eyes, "Do you really think I'll be a good husband?"
Will watched him for a second before going to close the curtains and block anyone else from seeing them, "I do."
Jay shook his head and grabbed his shirt.
"What makes you suddenly think you're not marriage material?" Will asked, "Because you've gotten shot before and yet you still proposed. You still dated her."
"I was naïve," Jay said while putting his shirt on.
"Do you think she's naïve for agreeing to marry you?" Will crossed his arms.
"I… no," Jay shook his head, "I don't think she's naïve at all. She has this job too."
"Exactly, so stop worrying about her," Will shrugged, "Hailey knows what she signed up for. If she had a problem with you being a cop or even your inability to avoid visiting me at work at least once a month, she would have said something by now."
Jay sighed, "I guess."
There was a knock on the door before it slowly opened and April poked her head in, "How're things? Hailey's here."
"She can come in," Will stepped back from Jay.
Hailey pushed past April and ran to hug Jay, "Are you okay? Why were the curtains closed?" she pulled back and set a hand on his cheek, "What can I do? Did he look at your back? What about your past injuries?"
"Hey, I'm okay," Jay said softly and rubbed her arms, "I promise."
Hailey rolled her eyes and looked at Will, "Is he telling the truth?"
Will chuckled and nodded, "Yeah, he's telling the truth. He'll probably just be sore for a day or two, but nothing that'll stop him from walking down the aisle."
"Good," Hailey breathed and turned back to Jay, "Good," she ran a hand through her hair, "Good."
"Are you okay?" Jay asked and stood.
"I-I'm fine," Hailey took a shaky breath, "Fine."
Will set a hand on her back, "How about you sit?"
Hailey slowly sat in a chair, "I'm fine," she squeaked.
"How about some water?" April asked from the door.
Jay nodded, "Please, thank you." He squatted in front of Hailey and rubbed her legs, "Talk to me, what's going on?"
"What if you were hurt?" Hailey gasped for breath, "I can't lose you."
"And you didn't, you didn't lose me," Jay said, "Look here, hey, are you having a panic attack?"
"I don't know," Hailey set her hand on her chest, "I don't know what's happening. The-the curtain was closed…I-I thought-"
"He's okay," Will said and knelt next to Jay. He lightly grabbed her wrist and started taking her pulse.
"It was just a bike accident," Jay whispered and stroked her hair, "Nothing I can't handle."
April returned with a bottle of water and passed it to Jay.
"Thank you," he said softly and helped Hailey drink from it, "There you go."
Hailey nodded and set her shaking hand on top of Jay's as she drank from the cold bottle.
"You're doing good, Hailey," Will smiled at her.
Hailey finally pulled away from Jay and took a deep breath, "Thank you."
"I'll wait outside, take all the time you need," Will said while standing.
Jay nodded, "Thanks," he kept his eyes on Hailey and continued running his hand over her hair.
Once Will was out of the room and the door was closed again, Hailey put her head in her hands and groaned.
"Are you going to be sick?" Jay asked.
Hailey shook her head, "No, no, I do feel better now."
"Okay," Jay said softly and rubbed her back, "I'm here."
Hailey took several slow deep breaths before sitting up and focusing her eyes on Jay again, "I'm sorry."
"You're sorry?" Jay repeated, "Hailey, I'm the one who ended up here in the first place. I'm sorry for making you worry so much."
Hailey shook her head, "I knew you were fine, but I…I had a dream last night that you…" she cleared her throat and looked back at the ground, "Died…at our wedding, so that's my fault."
"I'm not going to die," Jay whispered, "Look here."
Hailey looked up and bit her lip.
Jay smiled slightly and held her hands, "Hi."
Hailey laughed softly, "Hi," she sniffled.
Jay rubbed his thumb over her cheek, "I have too much to live for to die now. I'm not going anywhere."
Hailey nodded and hugged him tightly, "I love you so much."
Jay held her close, "I love you too." He kissed the side of her head, "Do you still want to marry me?"
Hailey's eyes widened and she pulled back, "Excuse me?"
"Does this make you want to marry me any less?" Jay asked quietly.
"No!" Hailey exclaimed, "What are you talking about?"
Jay blushed, "I was worried that since I get hurt more than you that maybe you'd see me as a liability."
"You are not a liability," Hailey set her hands on either side of his face, "You are everything to me and deciding to marry you is the best decision I have ever made in my entire life."
Jay couldn't help but smile a little, "Really? That's kind of a big statement."
Hailey laughed and shook her head, pulling him back against her, "Yes, really. You're my partner in every sense of the word."
Jay closed his eyes and rubbed her back, "Thank you."
Day 10
Kim spun around in Hailey's living room wearing a light yellow dress, "I look pretty good in this color."
Vanessa laughed, "I completely agree. Yellow's my color."
Hailey smiled and shook her head, "I'm glad you like them."
"Are we carrying flowers down the aisle?" Kim asked.
"You two will have white daisies and mine are sunflowers," Hailey said.
"I love sunflowers," Vanessa said and sat on the couch, "This is going to be summery and pretty. I'm so excited."
"As long as the weather cooperates, we'll be fine," Hailey sighed.
"We will be, totally," Kim sat next to her and picked up the hairbrush from the coffee table, "Want us to practice your hair?"
"Sure," Hailey breathed out.
Vanessa gently turned Hailey so her back was to her, "Up-do, right?"
"Yeah, but it's okay if some pieces are out," Hailey said.
"I'll see what I can do," Vanessa smiled.
The front door opened and Jay walked in with Kevin, "Hey."
"Hey!" Kim jumped off the couch, "Where's Adam?"
"Getting pizza," Kevin said while walking to the kitchen to drop the bags.
"Was everything ready to pick up when you got there?" Hailey asked.
Jay leaned over the couch and kissed her nose, "Yeah, not a problem."
Kim followed him to the kitchen and looked through the bags, "Hailey, this is going to look so cute. It'll be perfect."
"Thank you," Hailey called from the living room.
Jay pulled out the picture frames, "What's your plan again?"
"Just pictures of people who we wish could have been there and pictures of us," Hailey said.
Jay nodded a little even though she couldn't see.
"Gonna put a picture of your mom in one?" Kevin asked while passing Jay a water from the fridge.
Jay swallowed, "Uh, sure."
"That's a weird answer, man," Kevin said, "Isn't it yes or no?"
Kim looked up from the bag of tiny lanterns.
"I-yeah, yeah, I'll put a picture of my mom in one," Jay shrugged.
Kim glanced back to Hailey before stepping closer to Jay, "If you don't want to, I'm sure she'd be fine with it. I think she was actually going to put a picture of Al in one."
"No, I do," Jay sighed and lowered his voice, "Just feels weird only putting a picture of my mom in there and not her parents."
"They're for sure not coming then?" Kevin asked.
Jay nodded.
"But all the people she loves and who love her will be there and that's all that matters," Kim said softly.
"For sure," Kevin nodded before turning to look toward the living room, "I love you, Upton."
Jay gently shoved him and Kim hit his shoulder.
Hailey didn't seem to catch on, though, and only laughed, "I love you too, Kev."
Kim shook her head and walked to the living room, "Did you order the pictures to print yet?"
"Actually, I picked them up last night," Hailey pointed to the large envelope resting on the stairs.
Kim smiled and walked over to it. She carried them to the kitchen and carefully poured the pictures onto the island. She laughed and picked one up, "Okay, Jay, this is adorable."
Jay looked at the picture of him and his mom and chuckled, "Thanks." He looked through the pictures as well. Most of them were of the two of them throughout their relationship, both before and after they started dating, but there were a handful of people that had passed away and couldn't attend – one of Al like Kim said, Hailey's grandpa, Jay's uncle.
Kevin picked up one of Hailey and Jay with Antonio, "Hey, what's with this? He didn't die, right?"
Jay rolled his eyes, "No, he just can't come."
"I like this one," Kim held up one of Jay, Hailey, Adam, and her at Molly's.
"Of course you do," Kevin laughed.
Jay smirked and shook his head.
"What?" Kim asked.
"Oh, was it not obvious?" Jay asked.
Kim shook her head, "Clearly not."
"We know about you and Adam," Kevin said.
"There-you-no," Kim blushed, "Shut up."
"Mhmm," Jay laughed and walked to the living room, quietly mocking her, "Oh my god where's Adam?"
"You're on my list, Halstead," Kim laughed.
Hailey smiled and put her hands out, "Hi."
Jay sat next to her, "The girls' dresses look pretty."
"Thank you," Vanessa winked as she put a bobby pin in her mouth and twisted Hailey's hair.
Hailey winced, "Hey."
Vanessa shoved the bobby pin in Hailey's hair, "Beauty's pain."
"Sounds like torture," Jay laughed.
"Have you ironed your shirt for Saturday?" Hailey asked.
"Yeah, and I had the guys send me pictures of their shirts," Jay showed her his phone, "They look like light grey to me."
Hailey looked through the pictures, "As long as they're not white."
"Kevin, is your shirt white?" Vanessa asked loudly.
Kevin walked in from the kitchen, "No, Jay said grey, so I bought grey."
"And it's new?" Kim asked.
"Yes," Kevin sighed, "Jay said no dingy shirts. I'd double check Adam though."
"I'll do that," Kim said while walking into the bathroom to change.
"Of course you will," Hailey breathed.
Everyone laughed as Kim slammed the door shut.
Day 11
"All right, all right," Trudy said and passed out shots to Hailey, Kim, and Vanessa, "Here's to Jay and Hailey finally doing what we all knew expected of them after years of torture watching them go back and forth and back and forth and-"
"We get it," Hailey laughed.
Trudy smiled and held up her small glass, "To Hailey and Jay."
"To Hailey and Jay," Kim and Vanessa repeated before tipping the vodka into their mouths.
Hailey smiled and shook her head as she drank her own.
"Oh," Vanessa said and looked through her purse, "I almost forgot," she passed Hailey a sash that said 'Bride' along it, "Put this on and let me take a picture of you, I want to see how drunk you get."
Kim laughed and clapped her hands, "Yes! Drunk Hailey!"
Hailey rolled her eyes as she slipped the sash on, "Thank you," she smiled for Vanessa's phone, "Anyone want something besides a beer?" she stood.
"Wait," Trudy reached out, "Now that you've got a big spotlight on you, let's wait for the drinks to come to us."
"That's not going to happen," Hailey laughed.
"You never know," Trudy put her hands up, "I've been a witness though and even a recipient."
Hailey smiled and sat down, "Why not? If we don't get anything in a few minutes, I'll go buy a round."
Across town in Molly's, Will passed Jay another glass of whiskey, "Drink it."
Jay laughed and took the drink, "You're purposefully trying to get me drunk."
"Isn't that the point of bachelor parties?" Adam asked and grabbed another shot off the table.
"How would you know?" Hank asked and drank his beer.
Kevin laughed, "Now that's cold."
Adam rolled his eyes, "Very funny, boss, you're a jokester tonight."
Jay smiled and shook his head, tipping the whiskey down his throat.
"Yes," Will breathed, "Can we get you to do stupid stuff tonight?"
"I'm kind of partial to my memory, so no," Jay smirked.
"Fun sucker," Kevin said.
Hank chuckled and stood, "I should get going," he set a hundred dollar bill on the table, "Put that toward the tab."
Will's eyes widened as he picked it up, "Thanks."
Hank nodded his head at Jay and walked toward the door.
Jay followed him outside, "Everything okay?"
"Yeah," Hank turned to face him, "Make good decisions tonight."
"I will," Jay laughed.
Hank shook his head and chuckled, "Just be careful, okay? And watch the others, don't drink too much otherwise you'll still have a hangover on your wedding."
Jay smiled, "Copy."
Hank watched him for a minute before briefly hugging him, "I'm proud of you, son."
Jay froze, "I-"
Hank stepped back, "Good decisions," he pointed from Jay to the bar, "See you tomorrow." He walked down the road toward his car.
Jay stood still, not completely understanding what had happened, but still touched all the same.
Will gripped Jay's arm while walking him into the bar the girls were at, "We did good, boys."
Kevin laughed, "He's gone."
"Am not," Jay smirked and stumbled into a table of college students, "'Scuse me, cop here."
Adam pulled him away, "He's fine, he's fine. Sorry, ladies."
Will continued walking him to the back corner where Hailey, Kim, and Vanessa were sitting.
"Where's Platt?" Kevin asked as he sat next to Vanessa.
"She left about an hour ago," Kim said while helping Hailey get a straw in her mouth to drink another long island.
Will laughed at her and set Jay in the chair next to Hailey, "Nice job," he high-fived Kim.
Kim shook her head and smirked, "It didn't take much, I'm pretty sure she skipped lunch."
"I ate…I ate a burger," Hailey slurred. She blinked and noticed Jay, "Hey! My husband's here!" She hugged him tightly, "Hi."
Jay laughed and sloppily kissed the side of her head, "Hi wife."
"Look what 'Nessa got me," Hailey said and held out her sash, "Bride!"
Adam came over with a tray of tequila shots, "Last round now that we've reunited the happy couple?"
"We're gonna have to drive them home," Kevin said as he passed the shots out.
"I probably need a ride too," Vanessa blushed.
"I got you," Kevin smiled at her and touched his glass to hers.
"Next wedding?" Will asked Adam.
Adam tore his eyes from Kim, "Huh?"
Will nodded, "I see."
"What?" Adam asked.
"Y'all are cute," Will laughed.
"My husband's cute," Hailey smiled. She picked up one of the tequila shots, "To marriage."
Jay laughed and picked up one for himself, "Marriage."
Day 12
Hailey stared at herself in the bathroom mirror before searching through her purse for my Advil. Upon finding the small bottle, she popped two pills in her mouth and cupped her hands under the faucet to get a quick drink of water.
Kim walked in, "You okay? We were supposed to start the rehearsal five minutes ago. Platt's getting agitated."
Hailey smiled slightly and dried her hands, "I'm fine."
Kim nodded and gently smoothed the front of Hailey's white sundress, "Still hungover?"
Hailey glared at her through the mirror, "Yes."
"Not totally my fault," Kim said, "You were very anti-water and how was I supposed to turn down all the free vodka?"
Hailey rolled her eyes and sighed before cracking a smile, "Thank you though. From what I remember, it was very fun."
"Oh, it was," Kim smiled and led Hailey back to the ballroom they were using for a quick wedding rehearsal.
Jay smiled at her from his spot next to Platt at the front of the room. He straightened his tie and cleared his throat, clasping his hands at his front.
Hank walked over to Hailey and Kim, "Are we going to practice the whole thing?" he held his arm out.
Hailey smiled and took his arm, "I'd like that."
Jay stood off to the side with Hailey in his arms, "I'll see you tomorrow," he whispered.
Hailey nodded, "I'll be the one wearing white."
Jay chuckled and kissed her softly, "I love you."
"I love you too," Hailey breathed.
Jay stepped back, "Okay, goodnight."
Hailey held his hands, "Goodnight."
Jay smiled and stepped further back, "Will's waiting."
"Okay," Hailey smiled back.
Jay let go of one of her hands, "I'll see you there."
"You better," Hailey smirked.
"All right, that's enough," Will came over and set a hand on Jay's shoulder, "Let's go, groom."
Jay squeezed Hailey's hand, "I love you."
"You already said that," Hailey laughed.
"Doesn't make it less true," Jay winked.
"I'm going to throw up," Will pulled him away toward his car.
Hailey waved, "I love you too."
"See you at the alter, Hailey Upton," Jay called back.
"I can't wait!" Hailey jumped.
Vanessa passed the facemask to Hailey, "Are you excited?"
Hailey nodded and started spreading the cool green cream over her face, "I can't believe it's here."
Kim looked up from painting her toes and smiled, "It's been a long time coming."
"I'll say," Hailey breathed.
Vanessa laughed softly and carefully hugged her side, "You deserve all the happiness in the world, Hailey."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled and hugged her arm.
"I want to get in on that," Kim laughed and carefully walked over. She hugged Hailey from her other side, "I'm so glad we can stand up there and watch you marry your soulmate."
Jay stood in Will's living room and crossed his arms, "I'm fine with sleeping on the couch."
"You're getting married tomorrow, don't be ridiculous," Will said as he finished tucking the sheets into the cushions, "Sleep in my bed."
"Fine," Jay sighed and rubbed his face, "Wake me up if I sleep through my alarm."
"When have you ever slept through your alarm?" Will asked and sat on the couch.
"Never, but I want to keep it that way," Jay said and walked to Will's room, "Goodnight."
"Hey, wait," Will said.
Jay turned, "Yeah?"
"I know you've been thinking about Mom lately, and she'd of course be incredibly proud of you and would have loved Hailey," Will started, "But Dad would have been proud too. He just wanted you happy."
Jay nodded and smiled slightly, "Thanks."
He turned to go into Will's room when he heard Will say, "I'm proud of you too."
Jay turned back and breathed out slowly, "I had a good role model growing up."
Will chuckled, "Don't lie."
Jay shrugged and smiled, "You're a good man."
Will smiled back, "Thank you. Now, seriously, go to bed, I have a big day tomorrow," he winked.
"Oh, you have a big day?" Jay laughed.
"Yeah, I'm getting a sister-in-law," Will chuckled, "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Jay shook his head and smiled before walking into the bedroom and closing the door.
Day 13
Jay slowly walked toward the area now filled with chairs in the park. He adjusted the collar of his black shirt and swallowed.
"Everything's going off without a hitch," Kevin said as he walked over, "All we need is a bride."
"And Kim just texted me to say they're about five minutes out," Adam held up his phone, "It's go time."
Jay smiled and nodded, "Go time."
"You good?" Kevin asked and clapped him on the back.
Jay looked between them before admitting, "Just a bit nervous."
Adam shook his head, "Nothing to be nervous about. She's seen you with blood pouring out of you."
"And that time when he almost passed out from giving blood," Kevin nodded.
"Oh, what about that sunburn last summer right after they started dating and he got those blisters?" Adam laughed.
Jay shook his head, but still smiled, "Knock it off."
"Point is, man," Adam smiled, "She's in it for the long-haul. You've got to get through like a half hour ceremony making it official."
"You've been in more life-threatening situations than this," Kevin continued, "And we've got your back like all those times."
Adam squeezed his shoulder, "We're here for you."
"Thanks," Jay took a deep breath before clapping his hands together, "Let's go."
As they walked toward the small set-up, Kim parked her car at the back of it near where they were going to enter and walk down the aisle, "Ready, ladies?" she looked back at Hailey.
Hailey smiled, "I think so."
"I know so," Vanessa said and stepped out of the car.
Hank walked over, "Are we good?"
Kim nodded as she walked around the car, "Definitely." She looked up and waved at Trudy.
At the front under an arch covered in sunflowers and daisies, Trudy turned on a speaker and soft music flowed over the crowd.
Firefighters, doctors, nurses, paramedics, and police officers turned to watch Will walk down the aisle toward Jay. As he walked away, Kevin and Adam slid over a large door on wheels they'd made with Jay a few days before. Adam then took Kim's arm and they walked together past their friends, soon followed by Kevin and Vanessa.
Hank walked to Kim's car and opened the backdoor, "Hailey?"
Hailey smiled and carefully stepped out of the car. She straightened up and smoothed out her dress, "Can he see me?" she whispered.
Hank glanced behind him, "No, that door they made seems to be covering you."
"Good," Hailey breathed and grabbed her bouquet. She looked at Hank, "I think I'm ready."
Hank smiled and held out his arm, "I think you are too."
They walked together to the door that Hank held open for Hailey.
At the front, Jay held his breath until he saw Hailey step through the door onto the center path lined with fake rose petals and the tiny lanterns. His breath got caught in his throat and he blinked his eyes quickly. Will reached out from behind him and squeezed his shoulder.
Hailey nervously laughed and blinked back her own tears as Hank came back next to her and took her arm again. They slowly walked down the aisle until they were a foot away from Jay and Trudy.
"Hi," Hailey whispered.
Jay put his hand out, "Hi."
Hank gently hugged her and lightly kissed her cheek.
"Thank you," Hailey said softly before stepping up onto the small platform with Jay's help.
Hank shook Jay's hand and said, "Take care of her."
Jay nodded and looked back at Hailey, "You…you're beautiful."
Hailey blushed and said, "You don't look too bad yourself."
Jay smiled and kissed her hand.
"Should we start?" Trudy whispered.
Hailey nodded without looking away from Jay, "Yeah."
Jay reached out and lightly brushed a stray piece of hair from her face, "I've never been more ready for anything in my life."
