Bill slowly slipped the wedding ring off his finger, and lay it on the window ledge.

Of all the heartache and pain that they had both suffered during their years together, he figured that she at least deserved his blessing in being happy with her new life. Even if it was without him. Sometimes people really are happier that way, he told himself. Without each other. With someone else...

But did he really believe that?

He was about to take his leave when something in the window caught his eye.

She was reading something.

And not just any something.

A book. His book.

There, clutched firmly in her hands as her wannabe hubby cuddled up beside her on the couch was his work.

He could hardly believe his eyes. Yet somehow, it was there.

A small flicker inside his chest ignited an old flame.

One he'd thought had long been gone, but had somehow managed to brave the weather inside him.

She wasn't completely lost, he found.

She still thought of him. Still wondered.

Still held onto the belief that he'd be waiting for her to return, just as she'd be waiting for him to let her back in.

And maybe, he thought, just maybe given a little more time, she would.

Silently, he slipped the wedding band back onto his finger, and disappeared into the cold night.
