Goodbye

A/N-just a little drabble that was rattling around in my head. Nikki :)

Bella sat at the table; pen in hand. Next to her were several abandoned attempts at writing. A tear rolled down her cheek and splattered on the expensive note paper. It smudged the last word she had written and she scrunched up the paper in frustration. Her eyes fell on the wedding and engagement rings that lay near her. The diamonds glinted in the weak light and she sighed sadly. She needed to get this done, he would be home soon and she wanted to be gone. Saying it to his face had never been an option, words always failed her. Writing it down was her last chance at getting it right.

Holding back her tears she pulled another piece of note paper in front of her and began to write. Her hand shook as she put the pen on the paper. She used her other hand to steady it for a moment before she continued on...

I won't be here when you come home. I'm sorry if you don't understand, forgive me if you can. But I can see another road and I'm not coming back. Don't look for me around this town because I will be so far away you won't find me anywhere. I won't take any souvenirs or memories from our past because it's over and I am definitely not coming back. You gave me everything and now I'm breaking your heart. You know that I don't mean to tear your world apart.

I would never leave if I thought you couldn't stand the pain. This letter has no words of love at all because it's over and I am not coming back ever. And as I close the door I know I'm breaking your heart. I should have loved you more, instead I've turned your world upside down. I feel sad enough, I feel bad enough and all the times you are lonely where you are, please don't hate me then, I just could not pretend.

Goodbye,

Bella

She took a deep breath and quickly sealed the letter into a white envelope. She signed her husbands name on the front and lay it on the table. Picking up her rings she stared at them for a moment before placing them next to the letter. It was done.

Picking up her cases Bella opened the front door and locked it behind her. Her hand trembled again as she posted the keys through the letter box. She wiped her hand across her eyes, brushing away the last of her tears. She was about to start a new life with the man she loved, she didn't want him to see her crying over a past love. He had waited long enough. She squared her shoulders, picked up her cases and walked away from the apartment she had shared with her husband for the last three years. She never once looked back.

He was leaning casually against the side of his car, a beat up old Chevy that he was in the process of rebuilding. That's what he did, restore things that were broken until they were like new again, much like he had done with her in the past. He gave her an understanding smile as he took the heavy cases from her.

"Ready?"

"Definitely." She watched as he placed them in the back and then opened the passenger door for her.

"Thanks." Bella smiled at him gratefully, her heart already lighter just because he was there. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him softly on the lips. "I love you, Jacob."

"Love you too, honey." Jacob said back to her.

Bella felt a warm glow inside. She climbed into the passenger seat and waited for him to get in. They sat side by side for a few seconds before he switched on the engine. "No regrets?" He checked one last time.

"None at all." She promised him firmly.

Jacob smiled at her in relief as he pulled away from the side walk and headed for home.

FIN...
