Maybe something like 'But this did not go unnoticed by him' For 'feelings he couldn't quite put' 'place' would be a better match. Just two small things, I wanted to make sure I got them down before I forgot. I think you did a wonderful job. English writing is difficult as my first language but you were able to bring out the feelings very well. Super sweet story.
