Dear. Thor. What did I just read. I don't know if I can even put into words how perfect this story is.
I hate how Hiccup acts in that episode too; how could the writers have thought it was even a remotely good idea to have Hiccup treat Toothless like that? It's like they forgot about everything those two went through together, how much they trust and love each other. Seriously, there's no way the Hiccup we know would straight up ignore what Toothless was trying to tell him. And then to use his disability against him to keep him in the Cove... augh that's not Hiccup; he would know how much that would hurt Toothless, so he would never do that...
As for this story, oh my gods, parallelism is my freaking everything. Hiccup and Toothless parallel each other in a way that is so perfect and beautiful, I literally cannot get enough of reading it. Toothless wanting to show Hiccup how he felt, but not being able to go through with it... Hiccup snapping on Snotlout for hurting his best friend... even Hiccup hurting himself because he never wants to make Toothless feel the way he felt again. Like, what? What right does this story have to be so flippin fantastic?
Hiccup and Toothless might be a little bit broken, but when they're together, nothing else matters

Super emotional story. Could you also make an epilogue, where Toothless apologizes to Hiccup when he wanted to fight alone against the whispering death, although Hiccup has repeatedly said that he can not fly without him.

I agree this episode made me really uncomfortable for the same reasons. I like how you tackled it.

This was really really good! Its been a while since I've watched Defenders of Berk (lately all I've been watching is RTTE lol) but now that you mention it, yeah, that is out of character for Hiccup, and I like what you've done to change that!

I love how you've portrayed Toothless in relation to his own missing limb. I've seen others attempt this, but yours is by far the best- I actually stuck around to read the whole thing, which I didn't do for any of the others, so, points for that.

And Snotlout. Man. I just read that line- "why do I get the crippled dragon?" And just kind of. Paused. Literally. I put my phone down and stared at the wall like "oh my god Snotlout you monumental idiot somebody hit him please." (And good on you for having Hiccup be the one to dish out some good old-fashioned revenge for Toothless! I approve. Plus Hookfang all wary-like- just perfect. Absolutely perfect.)

And Hiccup removing his own ability to walk. Yes. Yes I like this, and it strikes me as something he'd do, like "well I downed the dragon guess I'd better down myself now to make it even" and Toothless is just like "no you silly human why would you do this to yourself this hurts me too why."

I'm also very happy Hiccup and Toothless are friends again. You had me a little worried at the beginning when you mentioned the changes in their dynamic (which totally belonged there, good on ya mate) but you pulled off the... Oh, crikey, what's the word I'm looking for... Ah, to heck with it, you wrote them 'becoming friends again' wonderfully.

Thank you for writing this fic, I too have also always hated that episode. Hiccup broke the trust between the two of them & treated Toothless like he was beneath him. I hated the look of desperation & despair on T's face as Hiccup basically trapped him in the cove turning their special place into a prison for him. Yet despite everything Hiccup did to him T was still ready & willing to help him immediately when Hiccup needed him, so selfless I wanted to cry & of course H was oblivious to the cruelty he had inflicted on the one he calls his best friend. This is very well written showing H just what he did when he basically abandoned T for trying to warn him of the imminent danger & broke the trust built up between them.

What did I just read? Oh yeah, perfection. I never liked that episode either, and this is a brilliant fix it fic, bringing Hiccup back into character. And Toothless thinking he’s broken, Hiccup saying they both are, oh the feels, my babies...’huggles you’. Have a cookie, okay? Have all the cookies. ‘More huggles’. Oh, and Merry Christmas ;)
