But this time it's even more dangerous as the fate of the whole world rests on their shoulders. Can they stop the Kaelish Queen starting a World War or will she break them one by one? Nina had planned everything for Kaz's birthday, but maybe not the way he reacted: furious, not even taking the time to look at them. Fortunately Inej is always there to comfort him, and also to love him, no matter what. Or how Kaz learns to enjoy his birthday again, his Wraith always by his side.

Wylan wants the gang to play a board game, but they keep getting distracted. Nina has a big announcement, Inej stands up to Kaz, Matthias is confused and Jesper is just his usual self. A light-hearted scene between my six favourite characters.

Kaz Brekker has taken everything from Per Haskell. After the events of Crooked Kingdom, Haskell hides away in his hotel room, stewing from his loss, he reflects on what went wrong, how he failed to see Dirtyhands coming. Title inspired by the song, "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" by the Offspring.

The Shu have been experimenting and now everyone can see the ghosts that haunt people. This wouldn't be a problem, except that Jordie isn't as dead as he should be. Or; the one where Kaz is haunted by Jordie's ghost and now all the crows can see him.

Unfortunately for Wylan Van Eck, legally changing his last name would be asking for his father to kill him. On the bright side, renaming himself 'Wylan Eck' for the next couple of years in college was totally do-able. The laughter would fade eventually.

Kaz and Inej would never stop fighting. But when she asks him to fight his demons so they can heal together, the Bastard of the Barrel is a little more reluctant to do so. But Kaz Brekker has never been the type to back off from challenges, and he would do anything for his Wraith.

One-shot. Five years after the ending of Crooked Kingdom, Kaz makes Inej a promise.

Per Haskel is concerned that Inej is leaving the Slat on a routine and not sharing where she is going. He sends Kaz to tail her one night, and what Kaz learns about his new spy puts some humanity back into his heart.

Everything is over. Nothing is normal. Wylan should be thrilled. He can leave the Barrel, bring his mother home, and spend the rest of his life making payments on that steep fee of Jesper's. Instead life on Geldstraat brings new challenges as he tries to learn to care for his tattered family and his father's empire, while (hopefully) becoming one of the few good men in Ketterdam.

"Go ahead, Wraith," he whispered to himself. "Go conquer the world." That wouldn't have been the last time he saw his Wraith, his Inej, Kaz knew that. Or at least that was what he hoped.

Six months after the ending of Crooked Kingdom: Everyone has settled down and things aren't so crazy in the Barrel. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of crimes, but the six criminal masterminds have retired, going back to do what they did before. Things are perfectly normal. . .until trouble stirs.
