Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I try to correct any grammatical mistakes or misspellings. I try to make a story more interesting by asking the author/authoress about certain word choices and fixing most mistakes. I attempt to find all of the mistakes the first time I beta a chapter, that way the author/authoress can be satisfied and publish sooner. As for my style, I always read the full entry, that way I get the feel and theme of the story before making any corrections and having to go back and change it so it fits better. Using certain words with certain feelings in stories often contradicts what a character is trying to say. I also try to figure out a character's personality, incase I have to correct any dialogue so it interests the readers. If you would like to have me beta your story, I would like it if you gave me a decent reason to. I can't beta every single story anyone sends me, so try to be as convincing as possible as well. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am good at spotting grammatical mistakes, since they often irritate me the most in stories. I believe that I can rearrange sentences so that the readers are more interested in the plot. Also, punctuation is something I can work out well. I have read a few stories where the punctuation was incorrect and the mistakes didn't make the story as strong as some of the others I have read. Therefore, I have been working on getting much more skilled at fixing such problems. Another area I excel at is word choice. I can help you think of a better word to make your story stronger and more interesting, so more readers will read it and be intrigued. Also, if you are a poet, I am as well. I can help your think of more sophisticated rhymes, instead of the common ones often used in poetry today. I also can help you write stronger lines and more powerful meanings to your poems if you would prefer that. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My largest weakness is correcting certain word choices without the writer's consent. I try not to, but from time to time I will end up replacing a word or rewriting a sentence without asking if I had permission to do so. Although I listed misspelling above, I can still spell the word wrong. I can always tell when a word is spelled wrong, it just depends on whether or not I can spell it correctly off the top of my head. I also can get characters' personalities mixed up, so I apologise for any mistakes I make in advance. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer to beta stories about things I enjoy myself, but I will beta most of them. The genre doesn't matter to me, drama, tragic, comedy, grief. I do prefer fanfics about things I have interst in, such as manga/anime, a few different books, movies, and misc. I support yaoi and yuri and slash, so I will beta-read those! |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I will not, under any occasion, betaread a lemon or innuendo-centric fic. I will put up with limes, but never ever a lemon. I also will not beta-read anything that is centered around drugs and alcohol. If the characters have some once in a while, it is fine. But if the characters are just sitting there, getting drunk and high 24/7, I will simply refuse to beta the story. I will not beta any HSM fics or Disney fics in general. I have nothing against Disney, it's just hard to beta something I never truly watch. Also, extremely gory stories I have no interest in. I will not beta any slash fics, unless it is just once or twice in the whole story. If your whole entire fic is slasher, I will not beta it. |
