Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been critiquing and giving feedback on friend's pieces for years and it's something I really enjoy doing. By lending me your story, you agree not to be offended if I give your story a thorough shakedown. I'm fair, but honest, and it is always my foremost goal to improve any writer's work by working with the author to get each piece as close to professional-quality as is possible. I prefer to annotate on the actual document itself with a summarial analysis at the end. I do not use Beta-reading to give my opinion on one's plot, pairings, etc., but I will point out what I feel are illogicalities or out-of-character actions. I also ask that you understand that I am going to college and have a job and various responsibilities and thusly, having homework and the like, it may take me a few days to get to your story, though I will put all haste on it while still being complete, and not complain at me that I'm not done yet. I'd really enjoy giving your work a look-see!
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have very good spelling and rarely do wavy red lines appear under my /

br /

My vocabulary is above-average and I will take every opportunity to suggest the replacement of weaker words with more colorful onesbr /

br /

I do play devil's advocate, examine a story from all angles and hunt down all the little inconsistencies in /

br /

I get very good mental images and am very good at /

br /

I write battles very well and am good at helping people polish up fight-scenes. They're hard to write and I'm happy to give some /

br /

To PotC writers: I take every possible opportunity to study ships, shipboard life, piracy, the Royal Navy and general information about the Age of Sail. While I am far from calling myself an expert, I certainly do know a good deal more than the average person and have access to a lot of information. Even if you have another main beta-reader, I am more than happy to give your story a look-over simply for nautical inaccuracies. Shipboard facts can make or break a PotC fic! If you don't know the difference between starboard and larboard, the fore, main and mizzen or the yard and yardarm, by all means, ask! and I'll help you make your fic both more accurate and more interesting.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I get mixed up on where the apostrophe goes on the various it's, its, and its'. The same thing goes for 's after a proper noun that ends in S. You'll have to get someone else to help you on /

br /

Deciding where a new paragraph should /

br /

Catching vague hints slipped into stories. I usually have to go back and read a story several times in order to get the insinuations and full appreciation of the /

br /

I have an issue with the word 'said'. It bothers me beyond words and I have done my best to eradicate in almost its' entirety from my writing. If you use the word 'said' often, I will constantly suggest trading it for something less bland, which might possibly become rather annoying. Sorry about that, but there are so many better words that speak volumes just by themselves, and 'said' simply holds no power and no imagery for me.

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Stories with characters I am familiar with. It's very hard to beta-read a story when you don't know the world or its' /

br /

Other than that, I'll read most /

br /

I also ask that before you request a beta-read, you read at least one of my stories, so you have a feel for my style and my work.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Any slash. Sorry, I just would have difficulty being impartial and providing good /

br /

Violence for the sake of violence. Violence in the context of fight scenes or other reasonable scenarios is fine, but I'd prefer not to work on, say, torture /

br /

Vividly depicted rape or other sexual crimes. Smut I can beta, but if it involves BDSM or other fetishes, there may be other betas more suited to that sort of thing.
