A flame is an insult, (ie, "You're stupid!" or "This is garbage!") which is not relevant to the subject under discussion (ie, fanfiction, here) and does not offer any explanation as to why this opinion is being expressed.

What is *not* a flame? Pointing out, kindly *or* harshly, factual errors, gross implausibilities, abysmal writing skills, and other incoherencies. This is known as a negative review. Any authors not prepared to get these, shouldn't be putting their work out in public and especially shouldn't be asking for feedback - and certainly never think of going pro. 7/12/03
