Severus' could feel his lungs trying inhale and exhale the air into his body he was hell bent on his destination, he heard what had happened, but he had to make sure for himself if it was true. The evening's events were running through his mind, as his legs directed him to where he needed to be.

Just as he was getting ready for dinner, his mark on his left forearm burned indicating that the dark lord was going to hold a meeting. Leaving the school in the shadows, no one ever noticed when he left. He was sure no one even really cared, since he was inducted into the order only a couple of months ago, and since most of the order did not trust him, he usually always left after he spoke his piece.

Apperating right inside the gate of the mansion, taking a deep, shaky breath, blanking his mind before the dark lord could question him about anything that could defy his plans. Stalking up towards the mansion that held the dark lord's inner circle, McNair halted him at the front door, and asked, "Who bestowed to you your invitation to the dark lord's army?"

Sighing, Severus pulled up his sleeve to show the dark mark in its full glory, "Lucious Malfoy." Hissing through gritted teeth, he knew the extra precautions that had been taken into place to stop anyone that was not supposed to be there. Granted you needed the coordinates to find this place since it was well hidden in the middle of a forest, but it would show if there was a trader in the mix.

Pushing his sleeve back down his arm, shoving past McNair, and into the dimly lit corridor that led to various rooms of the house. Hearing banging coming from the room on his left, ignoring what was happening, and steering towards the room where he needed to go, many of the death eaters were wearing their masks, however, he never slipped his mask on unless they were going to go gallivanting around in public or there was a new induction to the group.

Standing in the shadows, outside the room, controlling his breathing, Severus found that his senses were on high alert tonight, which meant something was amiss. Glancing from left to right, the hall way was clear; taking a deep, shaky breath once again, he knocked on the door. "Enter."

Turning the knob, entering the room, and stepping out of the shadows, noting that there were only a few members there that evening. "Ahh Severus nice of you to join us." The dark lord hissed, 'Hmmm curious, wonder what he has them up to.' Severus thought to himself, as he bowed down in front of the dark lord, mumbling about being a loyal servant.

Standing he noticed that the dark lord was staring him down his eyes flickered like a newly lit flame with a smirk upon his lips, "Well Severus I have some righteous news for you."

Severus cocked his head to one side, his hair falling across his face, an eyebrow raised slightly in curiosity, "That is fantastic, my lord. May I ask what it is?" He questioned, his hands were balled behind his back.

"Well Severus, that nasty little mudblood that broke your heart, in just a few minutes I plan on going to make sure that prophecy does not come true. I will reign." Severus' breath hitched in his throat, he felt the itch to run, to protect Lily.

"That is fantastic news my lord. Dare I say Thank you for taking care of that insolate, mudblood witch." Severus commented confidently, with a smirk gracing his lips, bowing his head slightly in thanks to the man that sat before him. Severus was gripping his wrist where his wand lay, feeling the wood make an imprint into his right forearm, all he could think about was how he could send his patronus to Albus at the school.

The dark lord shook him out of his own thoughts about Lily. "Yes, yes Severus go and celebrate that mudblood's death. You deserve it." Severus felt a deep, chilling, tingle travel down his spine, thanking the dark lord once more with a bow, spinning on his heel; he tried to keep his pace even while he left the safe house.

A couple of the rogue death eaters that were loitering the house heard the news and clapped him on the back in congratulations. Severus paid no attention to them; he just needed to get out of the house into the chilly evening air. Having a hold of the doorknob, when a voice came out from one of the rooms "Ahh Severus I heard of your news, that mudblood is getting what she deserves. "

Recognizing the voice without having to see the man's face, Severus lowered his head turning it slightly to the right where the voice was coming from,"Yes, Lucius I was just on my way out to go and celebrate." It killed him on the inside to speak those words.

"Well don't just have a drink of whisky tonight Severus, get yourself a woman." A growl nearly left Severus' lips, when he heard the door shut and Lucius voice was no more.

Leaving the house, a chill swept over the grounds, Severus strode over to the gate, glancing back to see that there were a couple of lights on in the mansion, taking a small note that someone was peeking out on to the grounds watching him. Taking a deep breath, needing to be strong for Lily, not knowing if she has been compromised, he apperated from the grounds in a flourish.

Arriving near the closest apparition point, which was in Hogsmeade, sending his patronus ahead of him, sprinting down the alleyways, skidding across the dirt corners, counting down the seconds of how long it has taken him to see the gate. Making the wand movements, barking the password with deep, heavy breaths, he felt like his lungs were going to explode, but he kept pushing on.

Gliding across the grounds, through the school in a haze of panic, fury and many other emotions that he could not handle at the moment he needed to figure out if the order was already at Lily's house. Severus already knew where they were at since they made Pettigrew their secret keeper instead of Black, he gave up their position months ago, but the dark lord is just now wanting to act.

Barking the headmaster's password, he took the steps two at a time until he had to wait for the steps to make their way up to the door. Barging into the headmaster's office, "ALBUS!" Severus yelled with a frog in his throat he was on the verge of breaking down, but his adrenaline was running high. Calling for the man a few more times, running his fingers through his hair, when the realization that the fact the headmaster was not there.

"Fucking Bastard the one time I fucking need him!" Severus bellowed into the room, as the portrait of the other headmaster's started to grumble about how he was being loud and some answered that he was at the ministry. Sending his patronus to any of the other order members that may listen to him, he was attempting to clear his head and make up his mind, if no one else was going to help her he would give up his position as a double spy to save Lily. Not wasting any more precious time, sprinting back down to the apperation point, not knowing how much time he has already wasted, going to the bloody headmaster who was supposed to be protecting Lily, but instead he is gallivanting around England.

Concentrating all of his energy on Godric's Hollow, he imagined Lily's face greeting him with a warm smile that was the only thing keeping him from breaking down the hope that she was still alive, and not at the mercy of the dark lord.

Shaking his head exiting his reverie of what had happened that evening the thought of wasting precious time running up to that damned school may have cost Lily her life, because the headmaster was not there to send out any of the order members to go and check.

Severus had sprinted across Godric's Hollow as a shadow in the night, a figure that if noticed would have been a figment of your imagination, having vaulted over fences to cut the trip shorter, his calves were on fire from the beating they have taken tonight. Turning the corner, out of breath, breathing heavily, leaning awkwardly against the brick wall he looked upon Lily's home and how it was in shambles.

Severus' heart clenched, 'No, no no.' was all his mind could think at that moment, his beloved; the only woman he truly loved was in the house that has been destroyed. Approaching the house apprehensively, his heart knew the answer, but his brain was fighting to believe another. Broken windows glass was littering the bushes, and the walkway, the doors were hanging off the hinges, the wind was howling as if it was in mourning as well.

Opening the fence parts of the iron wrought fence was torn to pieces; his breathing hitched for a moment, the realizations started to hit him, he threw himself into the unhinged front door, his wand at the ready, checking the corners making sure there were no rogue death eaters hiding anywhere.

Checking the first floor, Severus turned to his left where the living room stood in chaos the furniture all lay askew, the potter family portrait was laying in the fireplace with burned out faces of the family, the coffee table was smashed to bits, and books littered the floor. Growling deeply, Severus pushed on towards the kitchen that was to the left of the living room. Upon entering, he started to hear cries, which put him on even more alert, looking around the room, the back door was hanging off the hinge, with the glass covering the floor, dishes lay shattered, the curtains were ripped off the windows and shredded.

With the little bit of moonlight that entered the house, the next thing he saw made him stop dead in his tracks, what looked like to be a crumpled up body, taking slow, cautious steps he reached the staircase, and saw the dead body of James Potter lying on the floor. His body lay mangled, the eyes of his former classmate were wide open, and tears still clung to his eyelashes. The only noise that could be heard was crying from upstairs, Severus raked his brain for what the noise could be, and he remembered that the Potters had a son about a year or so old.

Stepping over James' body, Severus stalked his way in the shadows up the stairs, taking deep breaths, attempting to keep his breathing under control. Much less light up on the second floor, made him consider using the lumos spell, however, if a rogue death eater was here he did not want to take the chance of giving up his position. It gave him an excuse to sharpen his eyesight, there were five rooms, two on the left, same on the right, and one at the end of the hallway. Noting that each of the doors in the long corridor were slightly ajar, as if someone peeked in but did not find what or who they were looking for.

Taking a step at a time, to avoid any creaks in the house, he maneuvered his way down the hall, whispering only loud enough "Lily?"

However, when he reached the middle of the hallway, he had to blink several times because he saw that something was sticking out of the end hallway door. Forgetting the rest of the doors down the corridor, he full out sprinted to the end of the hall, which felt like slow motion to him, praying to Merlin that it was not Lily, but his heart already knew the answer. He kept chanting to himself, "Please don't be Lily".

Severus could physically feel his heart shatter into pieces, the pain of seeing her dead body lying on the ground was too great to handle. The feelings overwhelmed him, the man clad in black, the one who's never showed any type of emotion, a death eater, dropped down to his knees outside the door. The tears that invaded drowned out Severus' eyesight, did not help him when crawling on all fours over to his lost love, picking up Lily and caressing her for the last time.

At that moment, Severus let out every emotion that he had been carrying over those past few years, betrayal, hurt, frustration, anger, pain. Not wanting to let her go, because this would be it, it would be real that Lily Potter was dead. Her son lay in his crib behind him having cried himself to sleep. The minutes, hours had ticked by as he just sat there rocking back and forth, letting every emotion run through his veins he had stopped crying, and was now saying sweet nothings to her.

Apparition pops echoed throughout the house, he had to leave her; he could not let the order see him like this, but wanting to stay with Lily to let her know that he still loved her. It was a losing battle. He promised himself and Lily that he would come back when the place had cleared out and that the boy was safe. Scooting himself a few feet away from Lily, pushing himself off the floor, dragging himself over to the little boy, looking him straight in the face, the small boy had woken up when he heard the pops, what he saw was Lily's eyes.

"I am so sorry." He whispered to the small child, pulling the blanket up over Harry.

Having no emotions left, Severus made himself invisible with a disillunsionment charm, and waited for each of the aurors to pick a room to search for rogue death eaters.

Slipping past the door where Lily lay he whispered a soft "Good Bye"

Stalking the shadows of the hallway keeping out of the aurors light, taking the steps as quietly as he could, there was a small group of aurors at the bottom of the stairs. Looking over the banister, he lifted one of his legs over the railing, clinging to the rail just in case another auror came by for inspection. Lowering himself onto the hardwood floors, quickly glancing from left to right, it was a free run to the front door. Severus needed to be out of the house as quickly as possible, the headmaster would not be able to defend him if he was caught here, slipping out the front door, seeing some of the other order members that have showed up, Severus kept to the bushes, illuminating himself when he was in the shadows.

He wanted to bellow at them all for their incompetence, it cost someone their life. Scanning the crowd that had assembled, a snowy white beard caught his eye Albus was there as well. Severus' fists were balled up as his side, as he stalked his way over to the headmaster, standing straight infront of the man, he was several inches taller than the headmaster.

"Ahh Severus my boy, I received your patronus and sent some of the order here. They are investigating now. However, I am afraid that Lily and James are dead, but their boy survives." Severus' held no emotion in his eyes; they were blacker than the night sky that was void of any stars.

This was the day that Severus' Snape stopped caring for anything and anyone. "You promised me Albus. That you would keep her safe." Seething, Severus' jaw was rigid his teeth were clenched together in rage; he started to drift away from the horrid scene that would forever haunt his memory.

Pushing past the headmaster of the damned school, Albus grabbed the young man's shoulder, "Severus you promised me."

Shrugging off the old coot's hand. "I know what I promised Albus, I do not go back on my promises."

Several hours had past, the aurors, and order members had left to go and grieve. However, Severus had kept his promise and returned to the house that once held his Lily, noting that no one was outside not even the neighbors, apparently, they were just as distraught, and knew them well.

He investigated everything he could downstairs, ransacking the whole bottom level of the house before he decided to climb the stairs once more closing his eyes afraid that he might see Lily's body laying where he found her. No she was not there, and neither was James, or the baby. Severus had an inkling that he would find something in Lily's house, he was not sure what, but there was something, a gut feeling, telling him that Lily left him something of importance. Having found Lily's room in pristine condition, he decided if she was going to leave anything it would be either in here or the baby's room.

After searching for several minutes through drawers, her closet, and both their nightstands, he threw the mattress up against the wall, where a book lay hidden between the mattress and headboard. "Ahh I always knew there was a bit of Slytherin in her."

Throwing himself at the journal, checking to make sure if there were any wards on it, there were a couple but easy enough to open, questions mostly that Potter would never remember.

Opening the first page, noticing Lily's handwriting and figuring that this was her diary. Flipping through the pages, there was one from the night that she died. Feeling his heartbreak once more, he continued to the back just in case there was something hidden and there was an envelope addressed to him at the back of the book. His curiosity grew at the fact that she had a note for him in her diary. Opening the letter, he read the contents that it held. Severus finished reading the letter flabbergasted; sitting on the floor rereading the letter several more times, he needed to head back to Hogwarts he needed to talk to Dumbledore about this.

********************************************** 11 Years later********************************************* *********************

Severus watched as the boy named Harry Potter walked into the great hall looking around at the starry sky of the great hall, all of the students, and by chance, he caught the boy's eye. He never lost his mother's emerald colored eyes, or the onyx hair. 'Tall and lanky for his age.' Severus thought to himself, 'His hair is long...'

Watching as the new first years were crowding around the front of the head table, standing directly in front of him, it was hard to not keep staring at the boy. It was like seeing Lily again, but it brought back the memory of the last time he saw her eyes, and that evoked emotion so he gritted his teeth and started to repeat potion ingredients to forget.

McGonagall called each student by name, taking some time with certain students; others were quickly sorted into his house, giving a clap each time someone was sorted to show support. When the head of Gryffindor reached Harry's name, the entire hall went silent, the only sound that could be heard was the boy's footsteps making his way up to the sorting hat.

Harry ended up in Gryffindor, as well as another weasley. Once all the students were sorted into their respective houses, Dumbledore went over the rules of the year, when he mentioned the forbidden forest his eyes twinkled at a pair of twins that were giggling at the Gryffindor table and that 'If you did not want to die a most painful death this year the third floor was forbidden'.

Albus waved his hand across the hall, various foods appeared in front of everyone, Severus saw that his favorite food was being served, which he knew why they were only served during the feasts, because the headmaster knew how to get him out of his rooms. Loading up his plate with chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and creamy mac and cheese, taking a spoonful of food; he glanced over at Harry he seemed to be fitting in quite nicely. Elated to be eating food, and having people acknowledge him.

Eventually as the students started to finish their meals, and students were starting to drift off the headmaster dismissed everyone for bed and wishing everyone good luck this school year. Severus stood abruptly from his seat, knowing that this would be another night loss of sleep. Taking his leave, he went straight to the comfort of his dungeons, having passed by the Gryffindor's, chancing a glance once more to see the boy that reminded him so much of his lost love.

Instead of heading down to the dungeons Severus decided to wonder the halls, he lost track of time as he lost himself in the school. Having made his way up to the astronomy tower taking a glance out one of the enormous windows that littered that specific corridor he was on, staring up at the night sky seeing the stars aligning, he could tell that it was nearing eleven in the evening.

Stalking the shadows back down to the dungeons finding only a couple of students out of bed for the first night being back. The school was dead quiet on his walk back down to his dungeons, and he was lost in his thoughts which were reeling about the letter that was addressed to him from eleven years ago that was hiding in his desk drawer.

For the past ten years, the thought has always been on his mind to go and explain to the boy the truth, but he could never do it. He was never allowed to. He was a dangerous man.

Severus ran his fingers through his charcoal that lay upon his face, sighing he had not realized that the wind from the dungeons had already enveloped him like a blanket surrounding a child. Hearing the clicks of his boots on the cobblestone brought him back to reality, only a few more steps to his office.

Pushing open the door, the creak echoed through the corridors, dragging himself into the room, he decided to go over his lesson plans for the next week to calm himself down. Sitting himself down at his desk, pulling the lesson plans from the drawer, his fingers lingered over the drawer that held the letter but decided against it, at least for now. He knew his mind was once again wondering in territory it should not be, attempting to focus on his work for a while, however, when he could not help it any longer, Severus opened the drawer of his desk, that held the letter that Lily wrote him all those years ago.

Looking at the scrawl on the front, flipping the envelope over, running his middle finger over the seal that he opened many, many years ago. Slipping the note out of the envelope, unfolding and reading her tiny, neat scrawl.

Dear Severus,

I know it has been quite some time since we have talked or I have seen you, but there is something that just in case anything happened to James or me. Please do not be mad, do not hold a grudge against me. Do you remember that night that I came to you, and I told you that James and I were finished? Then I convinced you to let me stay…in your bed. Well Severus, Harry. Well Harry, he's not James' son he is...yours. Please Severus if anything happens to us, be the one to take care of him. I ask you to tell him when you see fit. I trust you Severus, and I never stopped loving you.

Love,

Lily Evans.
