Chapter 47 (The Final Stretch)

"I cannot believe she's dragging me into this." Sasha listened to Emily and laughed as she lifted her water bottle to her lips, squeezing it and squirting water from the cap. The year was now 2035 and she was fixing to enter a prestigious athletic college that would propel her into the Olympics. With her, but qualifying in the same area as a runner and climber was her cousin-who really was more than happy to be there.

"As if you don't enjoy the attention yourself." She swept her long brown ponytail behind her and stretched her arms above her head. "Besides, you've always followed me around." She smirked casually at her cousin. Emily scoffed and smirked back, slanting her dark eyes.

"Yes, and I seem to remember you always getting me in trouble with our mothers. Every time." Their mothers, standing nearby, started to laugh. "Besides. I do this, we go to the same college. What more could I ask for?"

"You mean besides a cousin that won't get you in trouble constantly because you decide to follow her into trouble?" She enjoyed teasing Emily, and over the years, Emily learned how to tease right back. "For the record, whether I place first, second, third-I'm still going to beat you." Emily laughed.

"Must you make everything into a competition?"

"Yes. Yes I must." It was how they got to where they were now, always racing one another and trying to outdo each other. This was the pinnacle moment of their lives, and even now, it was a race. She looked towards her mother with a bright smile. "Tell her mom, I'm going to win."

"I plead the fifth," Trina replied. She still looked the same as she did fifteen years ago, but with slightly shorter hair and a more pleasant expression. Beside her stood Derek and Hannah's little brother Jacob. Jacob was not so little anymore-taller than she was at just fifteen years of age. He had his father's shaggy hair and build, and much like Emily, Sasha had dragged him into so many adventures growing up.

"Do your best, Sis," Jake remarked. "You too Emily-I'm so not making the mistake of choosing between one of you two. I swear to god. Anyway, if you get this, that means you two are getting into the Olympics?"

"Yep," Emily chimed, "I can't believe everyone's here." Their entire family was with them. Emily's brother and parents had taken some time off, as had their grandparents. Even Sasha's maternal grandma was there! Aunt Taylor was there with James and Jessica, who were rooting from the stands. Aunt Tori and Uncle Ben even managed to fly out to see. With them was their fifteen year old son, David, who looked almost exactly like his maternal grandfather.

The only person not there in person was her birth father, but that wasn't a major issue for Sasha. Growing up, Derek was the one that treated her like a father. She didn't know much about Jesse, other than he was murdered before she was born, but she knew he was watching over her from heaven.

She moved over to Derek and hugged him, "Wish me luck Dad." He hugged her back and gave her a proud look.

"You'll knock it out of the park. If you're anything like your mother." Her cheekbones rose and her heart began to pump out the adrenaline. She was getting ready and couldn't wait to run. Her eyes turned towards her mom and she quickly took her hands. "Momma, this run is for you."

"I'm proud of you," Trina kissed her forehead and caressed her cheek. "You're an amazing girl, I couldn't ask for a better daughter."

"All runners to the starting line!" The announcer called. Sasha gasped and looked over her shoulder, bouncing on her heels. She quickly kissed her mom's cheek and hurried off with Emily. As she looked over her shoulder, she saw her mom and dad wave.

"I thought you two would never get apart," Emily teased.

"Mom and I are kind of inseparable. This is the first time I'm given an opportunity to go to a college like the one we're going to-and yet it's the first time I'm ever going to be away from mom and dad. Even my community college, you know I still lived with them." Twenty years old was a hard age to still be as 'glued' to her parents as she was, so she needed to break free-oddly it was harder for Trina to accept than for her to, but eventually her mother finally let go. "There are still some things Mom and Dad don't know, though…" Her eyes drifted to the stands where a boy her age, with long wavy hair watched her. Emily followed her gaze and smirked.

"When are you going to tell them about your boyfriend, anyway?"

"Let me think about that for a minute." She walked up to the starting line and looked to Emily, who was right beside her. Every guy she ever dated, her mom scared the living hell out of-and if Trina didn't do the trick, Derek did. "Maybe college where we're out of reach."

"You don't think they're going to approve, huh?"

"Of Zach? No, not really." Zach Cassidy was a bit out there. His older brother Henry, mother Emma and father Neal had a pretty wacked out family tree, not to mention grandparents that didn't look much older than their parents. Zach was separating from them, or trying to anyway. He was, apparently, like his father and did have some petty crimes like shoplifting-but only because he had nowhere to go. Those days were behind him, since he was getting into a nearby college-but like her mother, it seemed she had a knack for finding men with family troubles.

It was these messed up family troubles she thought would end up making her parents disapprove-not to mention he didn't own an actual car but a nice jet black motorcycle.

"Should be interesting though if mom and dad ever meet him. Maybe if things get more serious." She leaned down and slanted her eyes halfway, smirking as she eyed the man waiting to start the runners. "See you at the finish line, Cuz."

"In your dreams, Sasha."

"Yeah we'll see who's dreaming." She looked up to the sky and curled her lips up as the clouds seemingly pulled apart and a vision of her father, Jesse, gazed down on her with great pride. "This one's for you, Papa…"

The gun went off and the crowd roared as Sasha took off. Emily ran right behind her, and the two led the pack towards the obstacles. There was no stopping the fire in her soul.

Her mom worked hard to get to where they were now, and always she was Sasha's hero, and now it was time for her to return the favor. Her mom's story was over, but as she furthered down the track, she could feel hers beginning. The good part of it all, when her paternal grandfather stepped down, they truly had lived their lives in a state of total peace.

Now, going off to a University, Sasha was confident and hopeful things would remain that way. As long as she had her mom's support, her stepdad, family, and her Papa watching over her from heaven with her grandpa, there was nothing left to fear.

She was full on to win first place and qualify for the Olympics, and maybe one day win that gold. Yet Sasha knew, she didn't need to make first place to know that her mom was already there with her.

"Emily, how is it back there?" Sasha remarked while eyeing the finish line.

"Back there? Look to your right!" She glanced over and smirked as Emily mirrored her expression. They were neck and neck, and several paces in front of the rest. "I guess we're crossing the finish line together?"

"Yep." She extended her hand and Emily took it. Together the two girls laughed and tore through the tape and continued to run into their mothers' proud arms. They'd made it.

The race, was over. Her eyes slipped past her mom to her boyfriend in the stands, waving at her. She had a lot of work ahead of her with that guy. Emily's words played in her mind and she couldn't help but to wonder what her mother would think of his crazy family. Granted, she'd never met them either. No matter, she had a celebration to get to. "Hey Emily!"

"What?"

"I'll race you to the car!"

"Oh come-" Emily's lip turned up to a smirk and her eyes slanted. "You're on, and if I win." She leaned forward and whispered to Sasha. "You tell your mom about Ralph."

She belted out a scoffing laugh and grinned as their family members stared with arched eyebrows. "Don't worry." She stretched on her legs and smirked back at her cousin. "You'll lose."

So the alluding to would be in the description of that boyfriend. Anyway. This was the epilogue. I don't know if there will be a trilogy part or not, it woudl be interesting to have something in Sasha's perspective as an adult rather than a kid-but like I said there's a minor risk involved. Until I know for sure, this is the end of a legend-and I thank you for sticking with it all this way ^_^.
