Woaaah, long time no see! *Inserts excuses for not updating sooner*. Haha, no but seriously, writer's block + exams + birthday + family/friend time + laziness obviously doesn't mesh well for me. Thank you for the luck some of you wished me, it was much needed.
Holly hurriedly walked into the empty lunchroom and pulled her phone out of her lab coat pocket. She sat onto a chair and let out an exhausted sigh. Work had begun to take a toll on her after a multiple car collision had given her more than the preferred amount of bodies to process.
Holly: Hey babe, call me when you guys are on your way so I can order some food for us all. Tell Dov to bring Chloe by too. Love you
It had been a long two weeks since their relaxing cottage getaway and Holly was more than missing it already. When they had arrived back in Toronto it was back to their everyday schedule plus what seemed like an endless amount of tiring double shifts for Gail at the station. Holly had only seen Gail twice within the 14 days and they were only visits concerning work. Both of them had finally managed to find a day that worked for everyone; it was like some sort of forbidden miracle that they were moving in together. Today was finally it.
Gail: I think I'll probably become a mad woman and die if the universe decides to hate us again today. I miss you and I feel all sad and grossed out because I'm sad from missing you. Why must you make me feel things?
Holly: You are a mad woman. And, well, after we're done unpacking the other things I know how to make you feel will be worth the wait ;)
Gail smiled at Holly's reply and began to work her response onto her phone when Chris spoke up. "Do I even want to know why you have that mischievous look on your face?" he said as he scanned the passing street.
She sent the text and locked her phone, slipping it back into the pocket of her uniform pants. "Probably not, so as much as I know you like looking at my pretty face, keep your eyes on the road Diaz".
"Are you excited? It's kind of a big step for you guys. Before you know it you'll be meeting the rents and making baby plans".
"Excited is one word you could use".
Chris stopped at a red light and turned his head towards Gail, studying her face. "Nervous?"
She turned to look back at him and nodded, her eyes taking on a softer expression as she confirmed Chris' assumption. "A little…I've never been this serious about anyone before, no offense".
"None taken. You spend most of your time at her place anyway. At least now you'll be able to fall asleep and wake up to her every night and day".
"What if she gets sick of me?"
"Gail, if she was going to be sick of you it would've happened by now" he laughed. "You guys are great together. Always have been. So listen, if you guys are wondering who to choose as a best man-"
She swung her fist playfully at his arm. "You're such a sap Diaz".
There was a loud knock at the door and Holly rose out of her chair slowly.
"Hol, this stuff it pretty heavy you know!" a voice which could only be Gail's was heard on the other side.
She quickened her pace and opened the door swiftly. She then studied Gail who she noticed wasn't carrying anything at all. "I thought you said the stuff was heavy?"
"It is Hol. Look, they're dying back here" she said, motioning over her shoulder to Chris and Dov who had their arms full with her belongings.
Holly chuckled and shook her head. Typical Gail. "Gail, I told you to tell Dov to bring Chloe".
"Oh no, she told me, but Chloe has her last physio appointment. She said she'd stop by when she's done" Dov said, trying to shift the boxes in his hands in an attempt to lighten them.
"Don't assume I didn't tell him just because Cinderella and I don't converse much Hol, it's not nice" Gail said smugly, kissing Holly and then walking past her into the apartment.
"Where do you want all of this?" Chris asked, still outside the door.
"Uhm, I guess anywhere is fine. Gail and I will get it organized later on". She moved to the side, allowing the boys to enter the room. "I hope being rewarded with food and alcohol is alright" Holly added, watching them place the boxes onto the floor at the end of the hallway entrance.
Dov stretched his arms above his head and made his way to the couch with Chris following close behind. "Men are very easy people to please, Holly. Alcohol and food is spoiling us, so thank you, that'd be great" Dov quirked.
"Here, let me clear all of this" Gail offered, rising from the couch and taking the empty dishes into the kitchen.
Chloe watched the blonde leave the living room and began to collect the empty takeout containers. Holly began to protest, insisting that she and Gail would take care of the mess, but the cheerful woman was determined to resist the plea.
Gail turned her head from the sink at the sound of light footsteps treading behind her soon after. "Can I help you, Price?" she questioned, turning the tap on.
"Just helping out".
A long silence washed over them as Gail turned her attention to cleaning the dishes in the sink and Chloe found an empty garbage bag to dispose of the containers. She and Chloe were always professional at work with one another, but Gail still hadn't made it past the small talk during their time together patrolling or even in the locker room with Traci and Andy. Chloe had been about to return to the living room when Gail took a deep breath and cursed Holly under her lips for the continual feeling of wanting to be the better person.
"Hey". She turned the tap back off and grabbed a tea cloth from the stove door to dry her hands as she spun to lean her back on the counter.
Chloe stopped and turned back around to face the blonde, leaning against the marble island.
"I didn't like that you were always coming by our apartment when you started seeing Dov because at the time I didn't think those little coffee stops mattered. I didn't, and still don't like, your incessant Disney voice always yapping my ear off on patrol, but I've managed to tune it out. I never was a big fan of your openness because I couldn't stand to see you do something that was always hard for me…And when Dov came to us, torn and the most broken-hearted I've seen anyone, telling us about Wes, I really wanted them to pull the plug on you…But, Chloe, there's someone in my life that makes me unbelievably happy and I know what he feels when he's with you. You make Dov happier and nerdier than I've ever seen him with anyone else. You woke up and you made things right with him; you are the reason he has that stupid smile on his face every day and because of that, you and I are on good terms. I'm sorry for all of the crap I've given you".
The look on Chloe's face seemed to be contemplation. Her eyes held Gail's as she opened and closed her mouth, wondering which words would form an appropriate response to the blonde's apology. "I thought you don't apologize" she joked.
"Well, don't get used to it" Gail responded.
"That night on the rooftop, when I said you were a terrible person…I was wrong, Gail. And it's nice to see that Holly makes you happy". She smiled sincerely and threw her arms around Gail's neck, her unexpected hug closing the space between them.
"Yeah, this isn't really how I communicate" the blonde retorted as Holly approached them.
Holly made her way to the fridge, grabbing a beer before sauntering back towards the couch. "Gee Peck, looks like you're getting soft on all of us".
"Am not".
I've planned on dragging out the living situation for a couple chapters because I have a lot of little details I want to add into everything.
Also, if you've been reading, keep an eye out for another chapter of Unfortunate Event or Unforeseen Luck.
