Ok… A year. Yeah, sorry about that everyone. Time literally got away from me, as well as…. I don't know. Gremlins? Eh, any way WODH has finally gotten a freaking update. Sorry about the length, but I'm trying to figure out were to take this story considering I've effectively siphoned a lot of the serious from this story and moved it over to Sibling (Which I still need to change the title of…). OH, right. Before I forget to mention it, keep in mind that this chapter hasn't been beta'ed yet. Once that's done, I'll post it. In any case, enjoy!
Even as Danny waved a wand to make something float for the fifth time that lesson–a cheese wheel this time, at least it was always different– he still wasn't convinced that he was a wizard. The fact that he had magic wasn't up for debate, because he definitely did have magic in some shape or form. It was the fact that he was pretty sure that it was just another manifestation of his ghost powers.
Dumbledore didn't dispute the thought as much as use words and what passed as logic for ancient wizards to suggest that only human wizards could use the type of magic he was being taught, but magic was magic right? As much as Danny was certain that Dumbledore had a talent for seeing though simple human stupidity, the old man was still effected by what he was taught.
Oh well, Danny figured that it wasn't worth the effort to try to argue over it, seeing as he's already agreed to helping the old man. After all, when dealing with ghosts, it was alway's better to "fight fire with fire." The same probably applies to magic.
"Why do I have to learn magic again?" Danny couldn't help but to ask Dumbledore, despite his thoughts, as he kept the cheese in the air.
"You're learning magic so that you can blend in with the other students." Dumbledore answered indulgently.
"Ok, but why can't I just hang out in a secret room or something? Your school's magic right, so it should have something like that." Danny countered. Honestly he couldn't find a real reason for arguing against Dumbledore, but he just couldn't help himself.
"Do you really want to be hiding out for a school year?" No, he really didn't. "Besides, your parents expect you to learn something. I would be remiss to not provide said learning time." That was another really good reason, one that Danny really couldn't argue against.
"Well, I don't have to like it." Danny said with a huff as he lowered the cheese back onto the table, at least it didn't explode like last time.
"Few young people do." The old man replied like a long suffering teacher. Which he was, "Now lets see if you can't change the cheese into something else."
That was when the almost expected explosion happened, flinging hot cheese everywhere.
Danny's irritated mood lessened when he got home, on the account that Sam and Tucker were there waiting for him. Which wasn't all that surprising honestly, with their surprise summer vacation happening months earlier than usual and the sever lack of ghosts to deal with, they all had a lot more free time. Except Danny, he had to learn magic.
"An other bad day at the office?" Tucker asked as he wiped down his glasses. The amount of care he put into the question didn't seem genuine enough to Danny.
"No sarcasm out of you. You don't have to take any classes." Danny replied.
"So it was a bad day." Sam commented from her spot on the couch. "Another explosion?"
Danny sighed as he made his way over to the his seat between his two friends. "Yeah."
Tucker plucked something Danny's neck, "Is this a piece of cheese?" He then preceded to eat the newly discovered piece of cheese. "Blue cheese to be more specific."
"Gross." Was Sam's only comment.
"Agreed. And at least it changed into something else." Danny said.
"Why do you think you have such a hard time with this magic stuff." Tucker asked as he leaned back into the couch. "I mean it's 'magic'." Sam automatically threw a scowl at Tucker. "What?"
"Actually," Danny said before a argument of some kind could break out, "A lot of the stuff I'm learning about is more like a science than... Well anything we find in the Ghost Zone."
"Don't your parents explain everything ghostly with science?"
"That's only the surface stuff, ya know? Magic, at least what I'm being taught, works more like science. Just instead of expensive machines and stuff, it's with energy and will."
"That doesn't sound like science." Sam chose to comment. "Then again, at least I understood the words, unlike some of the stuff your parents spout out about science." The three teenagers nodded in agreement to Sam's statement. After all, how were they supposed to know how to speak doctorate level meta-physics when they were only fifteen years old.
"So if it's about using energy... Then why are you having trouble? I don't see the difference between this magic stuff and your ghost powers." Tucker said.
Danny took a minute to think of his answer. "Well, magic is way more subtle."
Sam raised an eye brow, "How so?"
"One's like trying to pick a lock, the other's like just breaking the door. Like I said, subtle."
"Oh." Sam said nodding.
"Should we be worried that you relate to breaking and entering metaphors?" Tucker asked, not really worried. Sam just shrugged, also not really worried.
The trio sat in silence for several moments, contemplating the peaceful atmosphere.
"I'm bored." Sam said, breaking the silence.
"Same." Tucker said, unable to bring any enthusiasm to bear.
"Yep." Danny also added shortly after his friends spoke up.
"We're not in mortal danger... And we're bored." Sam commented. "That's probably not a good thing."
"It's not." Jazz said as she entered the room, taking a seat in one of the chairs also looking rather bored.
"Care to elaborate?" Danny asked off handedly.
"Do you really want me to?" Jazz asked back.
"No. Probably not." The now quartet suffered through another bout of silence before Danny stood up. "To the lab!" he said with surprising energy.
"Why?" the other three asked looking more energized than they were before.
"Because Mom and Dad are out, and we still have that ghost hunting corse down there."
"You… Your going to go practice with your powers?" Tucker asked with a raised eye brow.
"It's better than nothing." Was Danny's reply. "Unless you have something else?" Tucker, Sam, and Jazz all traded looks with each other, shrugged, and stood to follow the half-ghost. "Yeah, that's what I thought. We could probably figure out how to set it up for you guy's too."
Danny had the same routine for the next several months. Go and practice magic with Dumbledore, who was actually a really good teacher, then try to figure out something to do with his friends. Despite the whole magic business, nothing but the occasional explosion managed to interrupt the monotony. If Danny wanted that he would be working in the lab with his parents, which isn't much better than what he was currently doing.
It was nearing the end of what would've been his school year if Casper High hadn't been blown up and wasn't probably radioactive when things finally got serious. He was trying to make a pillow sing and dance the can-can when white, etherial wild cat of some kind came flying though the only window in the room. Danny almost blasted the thing on reflex when it spoke in a deep voice.
"Dumbledore! We need you back here now, Harry's left Hogwarts and is most likely heading for the Ministry!" With it's job finished the cat quickly vanished into wispy almost smoke. Meanwhile Dumbledore exploded into frantic, but controlled movement. With in no time at all, he had everything put away into what could only be a bag of holding. All things except what Danny could only assume was so he could continue to study on his own.
"Alright." Dumbledore began, his tone making it very clear that he was to be listened too. "You have the rest of the summer to finish what's in front of you. If you don't make it though all that, we'll set up private lessons for you. If all goes well, we'll see each other when school starts."
"Wait, wait, wait." Danny said before Dumbledore could do anything to leave. "It sound's like something's going down. You're going to need my help."
"No." Dumbledore said with a hand gesture like he was cutting him off. "I would rather have you finish you're studies and remain a secret from Voldemort for now. All will be fine."
"What if he brings ghost?" Danny countered not backing down on inch.
"I doubt he'll wast them on this." Dumbledore sniffed. He enjoyed when people challenged him, truly, but now was not the time for it.
"How can you know that?" Danny once again countered the old man, with a slight glare and arms crossed.
Dumbledore didn't look impressed, "Fine. You can come, but you have to be able to keep up and follow me. Otherwise you won't be able to get there."
"Alright! Let's go ki-" Dumbledore promptly disappeared with a loud crack. Danny could only stand there gobsmacked. "What? You said- but..." He quickly began to scowl at the empty space before grumbling "Jerk."
Wow… That was actually a lot shorter than I originally thought. Um… Sorry, that was all I had. They'll probably make it to Hogwarts next time if that's any conciliation. I'll try to not wait a year this time… (*-*)' (I'm not really good a emoji's)
