Gobsmacked

Lewis nodded his head in understanding. He'd said the same thing after Val had died. Said it, meant it, believed it. And then one day…it wasn't true and looking back he could see it hadn't been true for a long time. At his age, when every time he turned around he was that much older, for far too long of a time.
Years and years, believing he could never love again, and all the while…all that time wasted. Only when Laura Hobson smiled at him, he couldn't really call it wasted. And if she wasn't worried about being with a pensioner—why should the years bother him? He might have left it late in the day, but, in the end, he'd gotten there. And it was a very good place to be.
