Chapter 21: A New Hope
He was Nothing.
A void of Nothingness surrounded him. There were no sounds, he couldn't taste, hear or even see.
Nothing.
He was floating in the darkness, observing yet seeing nothing other than pitch black.
Where was he? What was he?
Images, there were images! A young man, with sandy blonde hair...it was him. He was surrounded by people, he struggled to understand, to see what was happening and then—
Nothing.
There he was again, his skin was completely devoid of any pigmentation leaving it a milky white colour, his hair had turned grey and his eyes—red—or were they yellow? Innocents, he'd killed millions of innocents—!
"What am I seeing?" He asked aloud into the void.
"You are seeing what is, what was, and what could have come." Obi-Wan Kenobi's disembodied voice echoed and bounced around Luke.
Another voice, a different voice. It was familiar and soothing and warm and loving and everything good about the world all rolled into one sound. He tried to reach out to it; it was calling him, begging him to come to it.
And he accepted.
Luke Skywalker opened his eyes and saw himself.
No, not me...an older me? Have I travelled into the future? He felt nausea rise up within him and he groaned quietly.
"Oh thank the Force!" large warm hands pressed down on his shoulders, keeping him in place on the floor. Luke gratefully sank into the thick, warm carpet and let his racing heart calm down. He wasn't sure where he was or what was happening.
"Are you okay, son?" He glanced up and a startling realisation dawned on his face. His Father was looking down on him, worry etched into the aging face. Sitting up, Luke latched onto the man, clamping down on his arms whilst staring into his face.
Anakin glanced worriedly at his wife and sent calming waves of the Force to his son.
His hair was still blonde, Luke noted, but perhaps a bit darker and it was greying in places. His eyes however, were the most familiar thing about him; the same shade of electric blue as his own.
"Luke?" Anakin asked again.
"Father?" Luke replied uncertainly. "I...I thought I was dead?" He asked in a frightened voice.
"Should I get a doctor?" Luke recognised that voice. He glanced up and saw Padme standing there in a beautiful golden dress. The years had been kind to her and she didn't have that many wrinkles; her laugh lines by the side of her eyes were deep, and her hair had started to turn grey, but she was still as beautiful as ever.
"No," Anakin instructed, his heart pounding furiously in anticipation, "wait." He commanded softly.
"The Temple, Father—and Sideous—!" Anakin helped Luke sit on a nearby couch. Where was he anyway? And then he remembered; he was at home of course, sitting on the couch he used to jump on as a child.
"You remember?" Anakin gasped out, looking up at Padme in excitement. She raced forwards and sat beside him, taking his hand in hers.
"Can someone please explain what is going on?" Luke frowned in confusion. Leia? What was Leia doing here?
She's my sister, why wouldn't she be here? Sister. Yes, Leia was his twin sister. Luke struggled to understand where all these new memories—that were somehow old to him—were coming from.
"Wait here with Han, we need to speak to Luke privately." Shakily getting up, Luke followed both his parents into his bedroom.
He already knew the way.
"We've been waiting for years for the day when you would remember...we were scared you never would." Padme explained softly, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"So it worked? It was all true? I did go into the past and—"
"Yes Luke!" Anakin laughed, "Yes, and now you remember!" He hugged him out of the blue, and Luke realised this was the first proper hug he had shared with his Father.
No, what am I saying? I've been hugged by him many times.
"I keep getting my memories mixed up." Luke confessed, not wanting to leave Anakin and now Padme's comforting embrace.
"Your mind will take a few hours to adjust and get the timelines sorted out, it's to be expected. The Jedi Order is still running by the way...though they've modernised their views and allow love and family into the order...it's improved a lot, thanks to you." Luke sighed in relief and chuckled and Leia burst into his room accompanied by Han.
"Glad to see your okay." She said warmly, leaning into Han's side.
"Yeah kid, glad to see you're okay. You're little fainting stunt had everyone up in arms!" He joked, patting Luke roughly on the back. Luke blushed and rubbed his neck nervously.
"If it's okay, I'd like to have some time alone?" He asked.
"Of course, we'll discuss this properly later with Obi-Wan." Anakin put his hand on Luke's shoulder comfortingly, and then left, ushering Han and Leia out of the room with them.
Stretching, Luke looked around at his room; posters of different Holo characters and ships were stuck to his walls, he had his own computer and Holonet and...he glanced behind him and looked at an old fashioned cork board where a bunch of drawings and pictures and been pinned to it.
There were drawings he'd drawn when he was younger, and tickets from films and shows he'd gone to see. There were photographs of him when he was little, but one of him and of Anakin especially stood out; Luke was sitting on his Father's shoulders, he was about five years old. He could remember that day clearly;
"Daddy! Daddy take me for a ride!" Luke shouted, running as fast as his small chubby legs could take him.
"Hold on Pilot!" Anakin smiled as his son let out a gush of purely happy laughter. He waved his small arms about and pretended they were wings.
"One day, I'm going to visit all the stars n' planets in the universe!" Luke had declared.
"You'd better get started early then, there are a lot of places to visit." Anakin said semi-seriously.
"No! I want to the bestest Jedi ever just like you!"
Stepping out onto his balcony, he looked over the lake that resided next to their holiday house on Naboo. A small wind created ripples that gently roll across the surface of the lake. He inhaled the clean air and let his sigh of contentment be lost within the wind.
He'd done it. He'd changed the future; there was no Rebellion or Empire, there was no Deathstar and certainly no Emperor Palpatine to reign over the galaxy with an iron fist. And most importantly, no Darth Vader!
"Uncle Ben's here!" Leia's voice floated up the stairs. A rush of excitement filled him at the prospect of seeing Obi-Wan Kenobi, and he wondered what his reaction would be when he learned that Luke had remembered.
"Coming!" He called, running down the stairs.
Luke Skywalker's life was only just beginning.
