This is a spur of the moment fic, based on a poem I did for my Junior Cert last year. It was always the one I knew best (and remembered in the exam) and one that always held a deep meaning for me. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Subh Milis le Séamus Ó Neill

Bhí subh milis
Ar bhaschrann an dorais
Ach mhúch mé an corraí
Ionam d'éirigh,
Mar smaoinigh mé ar an lá
A bheas an baschrann glan,
Agus an láimh bheag
Ar iarraidh.

England stared at the walls, anger mounting. Why? There was strawberry jam liberally streaked across them. England's clenched fist began to tremble; he had come all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to see his colony and this was the greeting he got. A vein twitched in his temple.

He grabbed the door handle of America's bedroom which generously coated in the sticky red liquid. Ignoring his disgust, he pushed down and burst into the room.

"AMERICA!"

The boy looked up and waved at him happily with sticky fingers. "Hey, England. Long time no see, huh?"

England stared at him, feeling his anger lessen slightly. America was still so young, so dependant on him. America looked up to him; he shouldn't scold him for a few smears of jam. But, a small voice whispered, he won't be small forever. One day, he'll grow up and not need you anymore. He'll leave you.

"Um, England?" America looked up at him with those big innocent blue eyes. "Are you mad at me?"

England shook his head, squashing what remained of his anger. "No, America, I'm not mad." Not anymore, anyway. "I was thinking about the jam on the walls. That's not where it goes. It goes on bread. So shall we clean it up?"

"Okay!" America beamed.

England took America's little hand in his own and the two left to begin cleaning.

I should stop worrying about these little things and focus on what's really important, like my precious little brother.

There was sweet Jam

on the doorhandle,

but I suppressed the anger

that rose up inside me,

for I thought about the day

when the doorhandle would be clean,

and the little hand

gone.

Sweet Jam by Seamus O Neill

Hope you enjoyed!
