Less Than Perfect
"Didn't you have a date tonight?" Wally asked, disgruntled, from the floor. There are empty, greasy pizza boxes littering the ground beside him and six different glasses of cokes.
Artemis sat down on the couch, wincing at the way her dress beads sounded like a chandelier when she sat down. The whole dress was pretty-it was blue and sparkly and it left nothing to the imagination-but uncomfortable as no other. She'd been invited by Bruce Wayne to attend a banquet to celebrate her graduation Gotham University on a Wayne Scholarship, dress included and all, and attending was mandatory.
It also meant missing her and Wally's anniversary.
Wally wasn't like the (few) other guy's that she'd dated. He'd remembered anniversary, her birthday, and expected her to do the same in return. It was fun, sometimes, but sometimes it drove her bananas when she didn't remember why he'd randomly gotten her a bouquet of candy bars and he'd had to remind her. The look he gave her when she didn't know what they were celebrating could make her feel guiltier than almost nothing else.
Which was why when she'd had to go to the banquet—and hadn't been able to bring Wally as her plus one—he'd absolutely freaked out. But in the end there was nothing that he'd been able to do, because she'd had to go.
Artemis took off her shoes, let her feet sigh in relief, and looked down on him. "I did. With Bruce Wayne, and man, what a catch. I bet he never eats fifteen large pizzas all by himself."
"Doesn't sound like much of a man, then."
She hummed in agreement. "If all men had your appetite we'd all be in a famine, though."
"So why exactly are you back so early again?" Wally sat up and groaned, evidently regretting his choice of pizza delivery. Even his stomach couldn't handle Rosetti's pizza in large quantities, even though they were the cheapest place around. Artemis knew—they had a large collection of menus from everywhere possible in one of their junk drawers.
"Because, I told Mr. Wayne, you see, my boyfriend has abandonment issues. If I leave him alone, on our anniversary, he'll chew the couch and tear the curtains. I also may have batted my eyelashes at him. Besides, Batman likes me. Which is something you can't boast about."
So fast that he blurred Wally grabbed her from the couch and pulled her on top of him. His breath smelled like garlic, but she kissed him anyway. "I missed you," Wally told her.
She scoffed. "I was gone four hours. I missed half the banquet for you, you know."
"I chew furniture, I don't even know why you're surprised."
"At least this dress is pretty," she told him, and kissed him again. The garlic was mostly gone, but as soon as she got off of him he'd need to brush his teeth. "But I bet I'd look even better with it off."
"Now you're just reading my mind, beautiful," Wally said and flipped them so he was on top.
"I vote bedroom. After you've brushed your teeth," Artemis said and flipped them over again. This was just one of the games that they played. She laughed when she heard Wally grumble, and went to wait for him in the bedroom.
