A Star For Two

A/N: Inspired by Ellie Goulding's "Lights"

Also note: I use "Mei" instead of "May". I have no idea why, but I like it better.

Two pairs of eyes stared at the night sky from a field in Risembool.

"Is Al asleep?" Ed wanted to know.

Winry reluctantly turned her head to look. "Yeah."

Ed groaned. "He'll be a pain to carry back."

"You were the one who made him come with us."

"I'm supposed to watch him."

Both ten-year-olds sighed in exasperation and were quiet for a few minutes.

"Hey, Ed?"

"Yeah?"

Winry lifted her hand towards the sky. "What's that one called?"

Ed shrugged. "Dunno—which one are you even pointing at?"

Half-rolling-half-scooting closer, Winry rested her head even with Ed's so that they were cheek-to-cheek. She raised the hand that lay between them. "That one."

She was close enough that she could feel Ed shrugging. "Dunno," he repeated. "I don't think it has a name."

"Oh."

It was Ed who turned to look this time, met only with the back of Winry's head. "There's way too many stars for anyone to know all of them, Winry."

"I know," she replied quietly. "But… it's so pretty; it feels like it deserves a name."

"Pfff…" Ed snorted softly. Winry would say that, he thought. And then the strangest thing happened: the star seemed to shimmer at him. Just at him. He shivered.

Winry turned back to him. "Ed…?"

"It'll be ours," he said without giving it a second thought. "Our star. I don't care if anyone else gives it a name—it didn't have one before, and it's ours."

Winry flopped over, putting an arm around Ed's neck in the sort of hug that's comfortable only when you're stargazing at ten years old. "I like that."

10 YEARS LATER…

Once again, Ed and Winry and Al (with the additional company of Mei) were splayed out next to each other in the field they'd used as children, staring up at the summer sky.

Ed nudged Winry gently. "Al's asleep, isn't he?"

Winry turned her head as she had ten years ago. "Yes. So is Mei."

The smile in her voice made Ed curious what the two were up to this time. He propped himself up on his elbow and saw for himself: One of Al's arms was behind his head, and the other was around Mei, whose head rested just under Al's chin. "I think he does that so that he doesn't snore," he remarked, settling down. "But it can't be comfortable in any case."

Chuckling softly, Winry tucked her head under Ed's chin in much the same way. "Is it really that bad?"

"No, it's not," he had to admit.

They were silent for a while, not even moving.

"Hey," Ed finally whispered. "Do you… remember that star that we found when we were ten?"

"How could I forget?" murmured Winry. "I watched it every night, even when you were here."

Ed realized he was grinning like a complete idiot, but he didn't care. "Same. If I'd known, we'd've watched it together."

Winry's only response was to snuggle closer, which suited Ed just fine. Nothing really needed to be said.

After a few minutes, Winry's breathing evened out. One last time, Ed glanced up at the star, which seemed to be shining brighter than ever. He stared at it for a moment, then closed his eyes to drift off, too, a soft smile still on his face.

A/N: So, I don't do EdWin that often, as you may or may not have noticed, but, as often happens, I was struck by the idea and had to write it. I wanted it to be simple, because sometimes, the best moments in life are.
