AN: After I read Mockingjay (I don't think I was the only person disappointed by the ending), I realized that the Capitol had it coming for them a long time ago. Their world was badly corrupted, and it couldn't hope to last. This is basically a one-shot of me ranting at them.
Summary: A short letter explaining exactly why the government in the Capitol are a bunch of corrupted idiots.
To the Capitol of Panem,
To put it simply, you people up there in the government had this rebellion coming at you. Heck, you practically set yourselves up for ruin. This letter explains the numerous mistakes you made that guaranteed your destruction decades before it happened.
Now, you may think that your biggest mistake was letting Katniss Everdeen live after she so daringly defied your power at the end of the 74th Hunger Games. In actuality, your mistakes began decades before that.
Seventy-five years ago, the districts of Panem rebelled against your power. They were beaten down, and you installed the Hunger Games to punish them.
Now, hold on for a minute. Your first mistake is there, the instant you put in the Hunger Games. If the districts are rebelling, OBVIOUSLY there's something about your government that they don't like. So the best way to make sure that there isn't ANOTHER rebellion is to take away any reason for them to rebel. Instead, you just GAVE them another reason to rebel! Is it just me, or is there some flawed logic here?
Let's use the fire analogy. So the reasons leading up to the first rebellion are the timber and fuel, being built up and dried out until a spark ignites. The fire spreads, hence the Dark Days of the rebellion. However, you succeed in putting out the fire by splashing water over it all, quenching the flames and leaving the timber soaked. The rebellion has ended, and the rebel's flames have been cut down and drowned with fear of the powerful government.
You then introduced the Hunger Games as punishment for the rebellion. Unfortunately, over time it began to have the opposite effect than hoped. Instead of drenching the wood to prevent future rebellions, it let the wet wood dry out and become flammable again. In fact, it started building up more anger and resentment against you, building up the timber pile and even throwing on some gasoline. So when Katniss provided the spark that was needed for it to ignite, it blew up into a raging inferno that you have no hope in holding back.
Face it, you're finished. There's no stopping the rebels, now that they have enough fuel to take you down. The Games were the result of leaders that were angered by the rebellion and sought to punish, not to solve the problem once and for all. You could have been saved all those years ago, but anger, stupidity, and corruption sealed your doom.
Sincerely,
Amilla Evelan
