Electra wiped a tear from her dark brown eyes. Another time being stood up by Alonzo. Why did every Tom stand her up? Why did every Jellicle look right through her? She would always be on her own. All alone.
On my own
There's no chaperone
But my heart still is mine
For the keeping
Of course it was. No Tom wanted her heart. How could she be so undesirable?
Electra take a rest
You can pass this test
You can still dream you dream
While you're sleeping
She gently laid her head down under the tree she was sitting under.
If I can just stay true
To the steps I've taken
It will all come though
If it's fate
Let it be
I can wait
Could she really wait? There wasn't a single Tom in the Tribe who hadn't stood her up. Well…except one. She sighed, wiping a few more tears away.
Change takes time
It's a long hard climb
But I'll get to the top
If I'm steady
And where love's concerned
She swallowed her tears.
Well, I guess I've learned
Just to trust he'll be here
When he's ready
Would he ever be ready?
If I can just stay true
To the steps I've taken
It will all come through
I'll let fate set the date
It's okay
I can wait
She sat up, a determined look on her distinctive face.
Plant the tiniest seed down below
Tend it well
Than stand back and just watch it grow!
Watch me grow!
She stood up defiantly! Who cared if every Tom stood her up!
If I can just stay true!
To the steps I've taken!
It will all come through!
Name the date and say when!
She paused, unsure. No, she thought. I really can wait.
But…till then.
I can wait.
She held the last note, her voice echoing into the night. A noise behind her made her jump. She turned to see Tumblebrutus standing and staring.
"Electra…you can sing."
She blushed under her chestnut fur. "But not like Jemima."
Tumble shook his head. "Don't compare yourself to your sister."
He walked forward slowly, till they were inches away. Than, bending towards her, he whispered in her ear.
"She doesn't deserve it."
Electra looked at her feet. Tumble gently lifted her head up to his. He leaned in and kissed her softly. Electra sighed. He was the only one who'd never stood her up.
And she didn't have to wait any more.
