They married on a Saturday.
It was raining, a torrential downpour really, but she didn't care. It could have been hailing (that would come later) and she wouldn't have care.
He was there, two hours early to avoid being ten seconds late, dressed down at her request.
"I see you in a suit everyday, can you please just wear slacks and a t-shirt?"
So there he was, in the middle of a church, in a pair of khaki's and a shirt (she'd have to compromise for a button down). There he was, in the middle of a church, waiting to get married.
It sounded foreign to him, like he was living someone else's life. He had tossed that die a thousand times in the last two days, smiling and swelling with pride a little every time it landed on the four.
It had been the most nerve-racking thing he'd ever done, first asking her father and mother then asking her. He'd been calm on the outside, grinning as she grabbed him, jumping around and waving her hands like some caricature of herself.
She didn't want a big wedding, she'd told him and he believed her. It was hard enough to convince her to wear a dress.
"Ariadne, you have to wear a dress, you'll regret it later if you don't."
There he was, in the middle of a church, waiting to get married and he knew it was all for her. He wasn't particularly fond of religion or churches in general, but it mattered to her, so he stood at the center of the nave, awash in the beauty of the architecture.
He was waiting on her and because of that, he didn't hear his best man come in until he cleared his throat.
"Hey," Cobb said, smiling. Arthur smiled back, shaking Cobb's hand. "You ready?"
"Yeah."
The two men stood in silence for a long minute before Arthur turned back to face his friend.
"Thanks for doing this."
"No problem," Cobb said, shaking his head. "It's my pleasure."
More silence and Arthur was starting to feel a little nervous. People were starting to file in, faces from their past.
Miles and Justine.
Phillipa and James.
Eames and… some girl. His sister maybe?
Saito, Aiko and Mirai.
Yusuf and Daniela.
Chelsea and Jenna.
They were all there, smiling back at him the same goofy, stupid smile that said, "We can't believe it! No, really, we can't believe it."
They were all wearing raincoats and carrying umbrellas. James was soaked to the knee and Justine pleaded an apology with her eyes, but all Cobb could do was smile.
There he was in the middle of a church, waiting to get married. He was uncomfortable, out of his element, out of his comfort zone and then suddenly, Cobb was pulling him towards the altar.
"Show time," Cobb muttered, nodding towards the back of the church.
She was twenty, ten, five feet away and then she was standing in front of him, in a simple white dress, smiling and there it was. The reason he was there in that church.
"Dearly beloved…"
