Ianto collapsed onto Jack, his breath still coming in hurried pants. Looking into the cool blue eyes of his lover he smiled slightly.
"I love you," he breathed, brushing a kiss onto Jack's lips.
He felt Jack stiffen at his words and immediately broke all connection, looking down.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I didn't really mean that I just got caught up in the moment and I'm really sorry and," Ianto sighed, realising his babbled excuses only sounded stupid. Jack had known how he had felt before this anyway. "Let's just go to sleep."
Ianto rolled over so his back was facing Jack and he couldn't see the tears in Ianto's eyes.
Jack watched the body next to him as it shook ever so slightly at the emotions that were overpowering it.
"I'm sorry Ianto, it's not that I don't care it's just that I can't offer you commitment. I can't give you anything but right now."
Jack continued to watch the body as he received no response. He reached out to touch Ianto's arm but stopped himself before his hand could reach Ianto's flesh. "If you ever wanted to leave, I wouldn't stop you, I'd understand. You should have more than this; no one should only have what I can offer you."
"I won't leave you Jack, no matter what happens. If you ever tire of me I'll let you go but I'll never choose to leave you."
"That won't happen."
"Don't lie to me Jack. I've known all along what I was getting myself into and maybe I should have left before now but I was too caught up in everything and now I couldn't leave even if I wanted to. Just," Ianto screwed his eyes shut to block out the tears, "promise me you'll say goodbye next time and don't put off telling me for my own sake. I couldn't live with myself if I thought that I was making you miserable."
Jack stared at this selfless man and wished that he could be everything that he needed. "What about you?"
Ianto rolled over to face him again. "I'll live and I'll remember; that's enough for me."
Jack could see the lie for what it was and cursed himself for being too selfish to say anything. As Ianto fell asleep Jack couldn't help but feel that he had been right about Jack all along, he really was a monster.
