A/N: Yet another fic part of the Melleh Willabeth drabble series. And holy moly - PotC: AWE is out today!!
Drabble: Kitten
Will was on his way home from a long, grueling day at the smithy. As he walked the dusty streets of Port Royal, he thought of his wife who was waiting for him. Will smiled to himself - Elizaabeth was everything he could've wanted in a life partner, and then some. For the first time in his life, Elizabeth made Will feel like he was part of a family. He likened their love to a tall, strong tree that was rooted in friendship, which continued to grow and flourish as each day went by. The young blacksmith was glad that the weekend had finally arrived. Weekends were his favorite days of the week, just because he got to spend as much time with Elizabeth as he wanted.
Will was so lost in thought that he almost bumped into a group of young boys, who were grouped together in a circle in the middle of the street.
"Sorry," Will apologized. The boys just stared guiltily back at him. Will's eyes widened he saw what they were doing. The tallest (and presumably oldest) boy was dangling a tiny, frightened, squirming kitten over a well. Will knew he had every intention of drowning it.
"Put the kitten down," Will commanded softly, but with an edge to his voice. "Now!" The boy knew that Will was not to be crossed. He set the kitten down on the edge of the well, and gulped when he realized who Will was.
"It's the pirate!" The terrified boy slowly backed away from Will, as if he was the Big Bad Wolf.
"Everybody run!!" The other boys didn't need to be told twice - they scattered. Will sighed as he scooped up the kitten. It had been a year since he'd been involved with pirates, but many of the townspeople believed that he was dangerous. Elizabeth, of course, found that to be hilarious.
"Hey there," Will whispered, talking to the still-shaking kitten. "Don't worry, you're safe now. I'll take good care of you." Will let the kitten sniff his hand. He then gently stroked the gray kitten's head, and it looked up at him with glowing yellow eyes.
"Let's get you home, little one," Will crooned, stuffing the kitten in his coat pocket. Because of the kitten, Will walked faster than usual. He arrrived at the home that he shared with Elizabeth just in time for dinner. Elizabeth welcomed him home for the day with a big hug, and then Will took out the kitten.
"Oh, Will - she's beautiful!" Elizabeth exclaimed. "Where did you find her?" Will told her as she poured some milk for the kitten into a saucer. The kitten began to lap up the milk as if it hadn't eaten in days.
"Will, you have the most caring heart of any man I've ever known," she told him. "You saved a life today. You'll never cease to amaze me." Will blushed as she leaned in to kiss him.
"It was what any decent person would have done," he protested. "I think they were going to drown it because it was too small. But I couldn't let them go through with it - everyone deserves a fighting chance." She beamed at him.
"How did I end up with you?" Will grinned.
"Just lucky, I guess." Right then, the kitten meowed insistantly and rubbed up against Elizabeth's arm.
"That's what we should call her!" said Elizabeth. "Lucky, since she's lucky to be alive." And from then on, that was the kitten's name.
