Another attempt at a Gamer fic, sorry I know people are waiting on another chapter of Play to Win, but at least for now it is on hold until inspiration returns. Trust me, I have tried to write more for it but the chapters always come out shit and I can't bring myself to post them and end up getting annoyed and leaving it until I try again.

Like with Play to Win I will be putting my own spin on the Gamer ability used in this game. It will not be an all-powerful ability where the MC can just learn every ability, he wants only to never use most of them. I am going to try and make it more of a 'realistic' system as possible. I know how that sounds, the only things I can say is to read it and see what I mean for yourself.

While I like Gamer fics it gets old seeing the same thing over and over again.

Also, yes, the first part of this chapter is more or less the same as the Game set up for Play to Win with a few changes. I would advise to read it as it is not the same.

I do not want to spoil anything so I will stop here for now.

I will say that this chapter has a lot of world building and info in order to get the story started.

Summary: So I died…then a bunch of Screens show up and tell me I am going to be a Gamer, change me from a Human into something I have never heard of and told me it was dropping me in a world 3 years before the Zombie Apocalypse. Only the Screens didn't send me to a Zombie apocalypse at all, they sent me to a world full of crazy monsters…and not all of them are beasts. Oh…and apparently this is supposed to only be the Tutorial! SI/Gamer.

Chapter 1- Game On

0o0

I'm floating. There is nothing around me. I can't see or move. I'm not sure if my eyes are open or closed, but there is nothing but darkness around me. My brain feels fuzzy. There is no other way to describe it. Like a physical buzz inside my skull. I can't remember my name, or my family.

I know I had family, a mum and dad, older sister, and older brother, but I can't remember their names or faces. Hell, I remember my dog more clearly them my family. He was a Boxer by the way, 10 years old and snored like a lawnmower.

Unfortunately, I also remember the bus that hit me. Literally it is the last thing I remember. I wasn't even crossing the road or anything, I was walking on the footpath when there was a loud bang! I turned around to see what it was and had just enough time to see the double-decker bus swerving towards me, one tire blown out and the driver trying desperately to regain control.

Then the next thing I know I am here. Floating.

So, I am going to assume I am dead. Between the last thing I remember before 'waking up' here being a bus heading towards me, and the fact I can't move or think clearly enough to remember my own name, it is the only conclusion I can make.

Not sure how long I've been here either. Could have been minutes, could have been days. On the plus side I am not in pain, so I have that going for me. However, on the other hand I am monologuing inside my own head as if someone is there to listen to what I am thinking, so there is a distinct possibility that I am slowly going crazy.

Even as I think that I can imagine several people who I can't quite remember properly commenting that I was already crazy before I ended up here.

But what else am I supposed to do? I can't move or see or hear anything. All I can do is think.

I also remember my sister once telling me that it is okay to talk to yourself, so long as nothing talks back. Then you need to be worried. I should add that she told me this after I asked her why she was swearing at her computer and calling it names.

'Bing!'

(!)

Congratulation '?' You Have Gained The Power of a 'Gamer' And Will Be Relocated Shortly.

(!)

Of course, it is moments after her advice crosses my mind that something happens. Though, it's not a voice, so I'm not sure if it counts. A blue screen with black writing appeared before me with a 'Bing' to announce its arrival.

It looks familiar.

I remember one of my friends once telling me about a Manga he liked and convincing me to read it so we could talk about it. The Gamer, it was called…okay, this is getting weird.

As if it knew I had read it, three seconds after I was done the message on the screen disappeared and a new one took its place.

(!)

Before the process of Relocating begins, please wait while the System scans you. This Scan is important to your future development.

(!)

Okay, so I have no idea about this. I'm fairly sure this was never in the manga. Then again, the main Character didn't start off dead. I could almost hear a woman's voice in my head, talking in that forcefully cheerful tone that flight attendants use while explaining the safety rules before take-off.

Once again, three second after I finished reading, the message was wiped clean and replaced with a new one.

(!)

The Scan will begin in a moment.

(!)

With nothing else to do but go along with it, I prepared myself for the 'Scan'. It didn't help. Whatever this scan thing was, it came in the form of a sharp pain stabbing into my brain in different places one at a time. This was then followed by the same pain moving down my body all the way to my toes.

(!)

Scan Complete. Please wait a moment while it is being processed.

(!)

Thank you for your patience, your Scan has been processed. The results of your Scan will be considered during the Relocation Process and may affect aspects of the 'Game' later in your new life.

(!)

You will Relocated into a Tutorial World. A Tutorial World is a world on the brink of a disaster/apocalypse. However, as you are new to the Game, you will be Relocated to a 'easy' or 'beginner' world in order to adjust and gain strength. Everything that you do in this world is the Tutorial. Depending on how well you do during the Tutorial, along with what you do, will determine future Relocations.

(!)

The following information has been adjusted so that you can understand.

(!)

You are being Relocated into the (Highschool of the Dead) universe. Once relocated a 'backstory' will be put in place so you fit into the world and basic necessities will be arranged. You will be placed roughly 3 years before the Apocalypse. Please note that this cannot be avoided, the Apocalypse cannot be stopped and is a natural part of the world. You have 3 years to prepare. You are free to do as you wish both before and during the Apocalypse. Either save as many as you can or kill everyone and everything in sight, the choice is up to you. As has been stated before, the Gamer System you have been uploaded to has been tailored to you. Because of this there will be things about the Game you are not familiar with. When the System has judged you prepared to move on to the next adventure you will be notified.

(!)

Ok…keep calm…this is ok. So, I'm going to be dropped into a world a few years before the Zombie apocalypse…into an anime world where I only know what happens in the first season before they never bothered to make a second.

What the fuck!

If I am going to be dropped into an anime, can't it at least be one that I have more than a basic knowledge of? I mean for all I know the zombies might start mutating into even worse monsters after the first season.

How the hell is this in any way a 'easy' world. It is almost a complete unknown.

(!)

Before you are Relocated, there are a few choices that need to be made before you are put in place.

(!)

Due to you originally being Human, you are being given the option to change to a new Race. This is for sever reasons, including the fact that humans while very adaptive are boring and weak. Please be aware that if you change your Race, it will be permanent and is carried over to any future worlds you are Relocated to.

(!)

If you would like to change your Race, click {YES}. You would like to stay a weak, fleshy human, punch yourself in the face repeatedly until you change your mind, or I get bored and force you to click yes.

{YES}

(!)

What the hell happened to the overly polite tone? I mean it's not wrong, humans are kind of weak compared to the different fantasy Races, but this is a little insulting. It's also written completely different then it has been up to this point. Though it does make it seem more like there is an actual person on the other end of the messages, not a machine or program.

Not sure if that is a good thing or not.

With a mental frown I select Yes.

(!)

Thank you for being reasonable. The new race given to you will be chosen based off the scans taken previously and can be anything. All skills and abilities will be based of your Race.

=(!)

Congratulations, your new Race is…Nevermore!

(!)

I have absolutely no idea what a Nevermore is…at all.

When I notice that the screen didn't disappear and the word 'Nevermore' was glowing slightly, I focused on it and a new screen opened up.

(!)

Nevermore: Also called 'The Nightmare Beasts', Nevermore are shapeshifters and are considered by many as an Omen of Insanity. While not physically strong, the true power of The Nevermore comes from there magic. A Shapeshifter that takes the form of an Animal, The Nevermore specials in Mind Magics and Curses.

Race Perk: (Nightmare Demon) All Mind Magic based Skill Level up faster. All Mind Magic is more powerful. You are Immune to the Effects of Cursed Items.

Racial Stat Build: +1 Body Stat every 5th Level. +1 Perception Stat every 2nd Level. +1 Health Stat every 2dn Level. +1 Mind stat every 2nd Level. +1 Mana Stat every Level. +1 Free Stat every Level.

(!)

Due to your Race, (4) Skills have been Unlocked.

(!)

Shapeshift- Raven: (Active) Change your Physical Form into your Nevermore form, a (Raven) and back. While in Nevermore from your body is highly Resistance to 'Natural Environmental Conditions' All Mind Magic Skills are doubled while in raven Form. Cost: 50

Curse Scholar: (Active) You are able to learn the Curse attached to any 'Cursed Item' you are holding and replicate its effects. Cost: 500

Telepathy- (One Way): (Level- 1) (Active) The ability to create a 'Telepathic Connection' and push 'basic' thoughts into other living creatures' minds (e.g. words). Higher Level in this Skill allows for other things to be pushed. (e.g. Images, emotions, etc.). Cost: 5 to establish Connection. Other Cost my come into effect at Higher Levels. (Warning) At current Level there is a (99%) chance for the target to break the connection. If Connection is Broken by the target you will suffer a Backlash of 100 Mana.

Nevermore Aura: (Passive) You exude an 'Unnatural' Aura that can be felt by those around you. Negative Emotions such as Fear, Anxiety, Anger, Paranoia, etc, are slightly heightened. In its Passive form the Aura is mostly harmless, but there is a 0.1% chance of it causing Mental instability from prolonged exposure. (Active) (Level linked to Main Level) Increase the effect of Nevermore Aura (X Level). 90% chance of those that are the Same Level or Below will freeze from Fear. 30% that those that are the Same Level or Below will go temporarily insane and attack everything around them without discretion. Cost: 50 per second. (Warning) Nevermore Aura is more effective against those with weak Mental Fortitude. Irregular Thought Process and can cause unpredicted effects.

(!)

So, this is the Race best suited for me based off of whatever Scan this thing did to me. Not sure how to think about that to be honest. Mostly because I can't actually think of an argument against it. Even with my memories scrambled I still have a lot of them where people said I drive them crazy…though I don't think they meant it literally.

I admit, I have a lot of issues and my I tend to be a little dark in my thought process, at least what I can remember of myself. So why not become a demon bird that makes people insane…

Only problem I can see with this is that I don't think 'Mind Magic' is going to help me in a Zombie Apocalypse! Zombies don't think…at least I don't think they do. That is like one of the main factors of a Zombie!

(!)

That is everything I needed to do before you are Relocated. Please be aware that the Relocation Process can be a little painful and disorientating.

Sucks for you.

You will now be Relo-

FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK! Pain! Pain! Pain! Pain! Pain! Pain! Pain! Pain! So much pain!

Everything hurts. My bones hurt, my muscles hurt, my skin hurts. Even my hair hurts! I don't even know how that is possible, but my hair actually hurts!

I vaguely felt my back hitting something hard, but the pain was so distracting that I'm not sure what it is. A chocked gasp escapes my throat as I curl up into a ball, knees pulled to my chest. The pain is so much that I can't even get out a full scream. I'm like this for what felt like hours, even though I know it is probably only a few seconds, a minute at the most. The pain faded slowly at first, allowing me to take in enough air to properly scream. This went on for about a minute before my throat hurt too much to keep screaming and it turned to groaning, then a whimper, before finally silence. I don't know how long I stayed curled up on the ground like that, but eventually the pain faded, and I was able to force myself to move again.

Of course, this was also the point I realised just how cold I am.

I don't know where I am. But as far as I can see, which isn't that far, there is nothing but thick forest…and snow. The ground is covered in a thick layer and it is snowing quite heavily. I am also very naked…in the middle of nowhere, in the snow. Which is a large reason why I am cold, I guess.

Though even as I started to shiver, I noticed a few things. Like the fact I have muscles. Not overly bulging muscles, or even a lot of them, but they were definitely there. My skin is also very pale, though how much of that is because of the cold is hard to say. Bringing a shaking hand up to my head, I felt my hair on my head. Not short, but not long enough to bring it in front of my eyes.

Until I found something reflective, I can't be sure, but I don't think I look anything like I did before I died.

Oddly enough, for a forest, it is noticeably quiet. Silent even. That is not natural for a forest. Even with the snow dampening the sound there should still be something. But I don't have time to think about that right now. In the few seconds it took me to think that I lost feeling in my fingers and toes.

Of course, just as I was thinking about getting to my feet and trying to find shelter, my head was filled with what was becoming the familiar 'Bing' that came before a Screen appeared in front of me.

(!)

Attention Gamer!

An Error occurred during the Relocation Process and your destination was corrupted, leading to you being misplaced. Details of your current world are unavailable. It is not possible to change your current Relocation until the Tutorial Period is complete. The only information about this world is that like your original destination it can be found in your Original Worlds 'fiction'. It is also a lot harder in terms of level, though details are limited.

Due to the Error and the fact you currently have no combat skills to deal with this world, you will be given a choice between 2 Skills you would not have otherwise until later.

Please choice one of the following Skills. Please be aware that once you have chosen one of these Skills the other Skills offered, and any future Skills linked to them will be closed to you for twice the normal Level Requirement.

(!)

Shadow Pocket: (Level- 1) (Shadow Magic) (Active) Allows you to create and place items and or enter a pocket dimension inside a shadow to store/hide. Cost: 10 per second to enter a shadow. No cost to place/remove items in shadow (Warning) If you run out of Mana while still inside a 'Shadow Pocket', you will be forced from the Shadow.

Mind Screech: (Level- 1) (Mind Magic) (Active) A Psychic attack that forces a 'Mental Screech' into the target. Prolonged exposure to this Skill may cause the target to lose Consciousness. Cost: 5 per second (Note) This Skill can be 'overloaded' to increase the damage. Cost: 300 (Requirement) Mind Screech can only be used through line of sight and on a single target at a time.

(!)

Really…you fuck up and drop me off in the middle of nowhere in the wrong world and all I get is a choice between a couple of Skills? Not only that be once I pick one the other is locked and I can't get it again for who knows how long.

Ok, so time to think. Two vastly different skills. One to hide and one to attack. I also have to remember the part about other related skills being locked along with the Skill I don't pick. So not only is it a choice between these skills, it is a choice between Shadow Magic or Mind Magic. It might be an easier choice to make if I had something other than fiction to base my decision off.

Another round of shivering made me get to my feet with a little effort and start walking around to try and generate a little heat. The screen stayed in front of me as I walked, waiting for me to pick.

Option one, Shadow Magic. A lot of fiction to go off and being able to hide would be extremely useful right now. I also get the feeling that this is supposed to be my equivalent of an Inventory based off the description. If it follows most fiction to do with shadows, then I could be looking at things like teleportation and limitless supply of weapons in the form of physical Shadows. Useful in the long term, but it depends on how long before I get something like that. Being able to hide isn't going help me get stronger and if anything, it will do the opposite and slow me down.

Option two, Mind Magic. Again, a lot of fiction to base what sort of skills I might get from this. Through so far everything I have seen from the Screens seems to be about 'pushing' my thoughts instead of reading them, not sure if that will change in the future. However, the Mind Screech is an actual attack, something I can use right now. Then there is my Race Perk that seems to be pushing me towards Mind Magic, probably tied to the whole Nightmare Demon that makes people crazy thing.

In the end, as cool as being able to control Shadows would be, I need something to fight with not hide. The Race Perk makes Mind Magic stronger and easier to Level and that is what I need right now.

With a sigh I select Mind Screech, still not stopping my movement in fear of not being able to start again if I do.

(!)

You Have Selected 'Mind Screech'.

(!)

For making a sensible decision, you have been given 1 Free Stat point.

(!)

Now that the Relocation Process is Complete and your body has had time to settle, the Game System will come fully into effect when you have taken the time to read the basic Descriptions of your Stats and Skills.

(!)

P.S. On a personal, you might want to change into your Raven Form before you freeze to death.

(!)

Why would changing into a Raven…fuck!

Remembering the Race description I only just read and wishing my hands weren't so numb so I could hit myself in the head for being so stupid, I closed my eyes and tried to activate a Skill for the first time. It took only a few seconds to find what I can only describe as a 'mental switch' inside my head, several in fact, though I was able to feel the difference between them to find my Shapeshifting Skill.

There was a brief feeling of vertigo as my body shifted, along with a tightness as my body was forced into a smaller form. But it passed in less than a second, and the next thing I knew everything suddenly looked a lot bigger and I didn't feel the cold anymore.

Of course, now I have a new problem. One that became noticeably clear when I tried to take a step forward only to fall face…beak first into the snow. A few seconds of rolling and twisting around later I was able to get back on my feet. As it turns out, there is a big difference between moving as a human and moving as a bird.

This led to about an hour of failed attempts to move until I realised what I was doing wrong and stopped thinking about moving, and let my instincts take over. It wasn't perfect of course, but it was enough for me to fly up to a tree branch in one of the surrounding trees…after missing 3 times and falling off twice.

Feeling better now that I wasn't a small bird on the ground in a forest that probably has more than a few predators wondering around that would be more than happy to make me a snack, I took the time to look over the System that was now my life.

Concentrating on the word Status brought up a stream of new Screens.

Note!

While information on your current world is limited, The System was able to manipulate the history enough to form a Background for you. 'Luckily' anyone who knew you personally before you were Relocated is dead, so you do not need to worry about anyone noticing anything wrong.

Note!

If you are able to identify the World you have been Relocated to, the relevant Background Information and memories will be Uploaded into your mind.

Somehow, it seemed like both a lot of information to take in all at once, and not nearly enough. My backstory is unsurprisingly dark and depressing, but at least I don't need to worry about running into someone who I don't know but 'knows' me.

No Gamer's Mind, though to be honest that Skill never sat well with me. Forcefully suppressing your emotions and always keeping you calm, if you can't react how you would normally is it even really you? Gamer's Body is different to, though this time it seemed to be a good thing. I get the feeling the whole thing about pain fading instantly and healing from everything is going to be extremely useful.

The whole Gamer's Block thing opened a lot of questions that I don't even want to go into right now. It seems to be more about stopping me running my mouth then it is for my benefit. The last warning about other Gamers through is what really caught my attention…and worried me.

Taking a deep breath after seeing the screen, which I imagine looks really weird with a Ravens body, I jumped off the branch and took to the air…only to fly right into a tree. This is going to take a while to get used to.

2 Days Later

0o0

'RRRRROOOOAAAARRRR!'

Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit!

Two days…TWO DAYS!

Two days of nothing but empty, silent forest. I didn't manage to Level up, what with there being nothing to fight. I did find a small stream that I used to see my reflection, both Human and Raven. I was right about not looking the same.

My face was sharper, almost…elf like? At least evil elf anyway. High cheekbones, narrow chin and my noise was a little pointed. Even my ears were a little pointed, more than enough to be noticeable. My eyes are also purple, which was a little odd. It wasn't enough that I couldn't pass for human, but it was a little disconcerting.

As for my Raven Form, for the most part I was a normal Raven…with purple, almost human like eyes instead of beady bird ones. It was almost unnoticeable at a glance, but if you took a moment to really look it was blaringly obvious.

It turns out I don't feel the cold anymore now that Gamer's Body is active. I do however get a warning about the cold in the form losing Health like a status effect that wouldn't go away until I change back into a bird.

I'd used the Stat Point I was given by the System and put it into my Mana Stat, seeing as most of my all my Skills work off Mana. At least for now, it seems like a good idea to get more of it.

I also got a handle on flying as a bird, not perfect I admit but at least I've stopped flying into tress every few minutes. Which is good, considering the fact a GIANT FUCKING TIGER MONSTER is chasing me!

There I was, minding my own business, just flying around looking for something to eat. When out of nowhere this giant monster cat pounced at me, barely missing me before continuing to chase me. Why there would be a Tiger like monster in a snowy forest, I have no idea.

Horned Winter Trigar: Level- 24

That was all I got from the System. No HP or anything, so either I can't see it, or Gamer's body only applies to me. Hopefully the later, because that would make killing things a lot easier if I'm not limited by how many points of damage I can do at a time and can just kill something like a normal animal it would make life a lot easier.

Anyway, back to the monster cat.

Picture a Saber Tooth tiger, with white fur on its back and legs and light blue fur underneath and blue stripes. Now I'm not sure what size a real Saber Teeth Tiger would have been, but this one was easily the size of a black bear only sleeker and built for speed. Oh, it also has bull like horns on the sides of its head, and three large solid red eyes instead of two. Which I am guessing is the reason for the name the Game System is giving me.

So here I am, desperately running…flying, away from a Horned Triger so far out of my level I don't know if anything I can do would even scratch it. Why is it even chasing me in the first place! I am tiny compared to this thing. You could fit like five of me in its mouth while in bird form!

I don't dare look back, but I can hear it right behind me, knocking into trees and making more noise than I had heard in the last two days since I arrived in this forest. Every time I thought I lost it, the stupid beast would jump from behind another tree or bush and try and swallow me. I tried to fly up above the trees but the moment I breached the branches I head a screech and had just enough time to see something diving towards me before I dropped back down below the trees to my waiting tormentor.

So, escaping into the sky is out. Stupid Trigar is making so much noise it's going to bring the whole bloody forest down on me.

We had been playing this game of cat and mouse for almost an hour now and I couldn't see anywhere to change it. I can't go up for fear of being plucked out of the air by a larger bird. I can't lose the Trigar because there is nothing but snowy forest around me that has already proven to be useless in regard to losing this thing!

That's when I saw it…my salvation in the form of a cliff overlooking the forest right in front of me. The trees had hidden it from my sight until it was practically on top of me and I almost flew straight into it. Backing to the right I kept the wall of rock on my left and the trees to my right as my eyes scanned the wall. I made sure to stay close to the trees in fear of whatever tried to grab me before coming back for another attempt.

I heard it slam into the wall as it broke through the trees behind me, stunning itself for a moment and giving me a little more space between us before the chase continued. About five minutes later I saw it, a gap in the rock. Big enough for me to fit through, small enough the Trigar can't.

I got through the gap without stopping or slowing down, only to find that it was a very shallow gap. I hit the dead end of the wall and bounced off; the pain was gone before I hit the ground. A moment later what little light that could get into the gap was blocked off as the Trigar slammed into the wall, stone dust shacking free of the walls and falling on me. It slammed into the wall a few times in anger before it went quite for a moment before the sound of scraping started.

It was trying to dig its way in.

Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Now I'm trapped in a small space, with the Trigar blocking the only exit. An exit that is slowly getting larger.

Ok…keep calm, this can still work.

Finding the mental switch inside my head connected to my Mine Screech Skill, I focused on the Trigar, and then I heard a high-pitched whistling sound in the back of my head. It was a little annoying, but not too bad. At least to me, to the Trigar there was a lot more of a reaction.

It stopped digging and backed away from the whole, forcing me to hop closer to keep it in my line of sight in fear of the Skill being cut off. I watched as the Trigar swotted its own head and ears with its front paws. It's kind of remined me of how animals react when they hear a frequency that is harmful for them.

The problem is that while it was clearly hurting it, the moment I cut off the Skill the Trigar will go right back to trying to kill me. Not only that but after 10 second of use I have already used 50 of my limited mana. Gritting my…beck, I focus on the second part of the Mind Screech Skill, using up 300 mana in one go leaving me with only half my mana. It was a big risk at the moment considering how little mana I have, but if I don't try, I'll run out of mana anyway.

The sound in my head shot up for a moment before going silent as the skill stopped and for a moment, I was terrified I did something wrong. Except the whistling wasn't the only thing that went quiet. Focusing back on the Trigar I realised that it had stopped moving. Slowly hopping to the mouth of the whole to get a closer look but not wanting to risk coming out into the open until I am sure it's not just playing dead, I saw dark green blood leaking out of its eyes and ears.

The Skill 'Mind Screech' has Leveled up X5

(!)

Mind Screech: (Level- 5) (Mind Magic) (Active) A Psychic attack that forces a 'Mental Screech' into the target. Prolonged exposure to this Skill may cause the target to lose Consciousness. Cost: 5 per second (Note) Prolonged exposure to this Skill has a 10% of causing Temporary Blindness. (Note) This Skill can be 'overloaded' to increase the damage the more mana used the stronger the effect. Cost: 300-400. (Requirement) Mind Screech can only be used though line of sight and on a single target at a time.

For a moment I just stared at the clearly dead monster that I apparently killed by exploding something in its brain, before turning my attention to the notifications. Without a second thought I moved the two new Free Stats to Mana again, bringing it up to 11 and giving me more mana to work with.

After a quick glance up to check for anything in the sky about to swoop down and eat me, I flew down next to the Trigar and changed back to my human form.

(!)

Waning!

You are in an Extreme Environment with no protection!

You have gained the Status Condition 'Cold'.

-50 Every Hour until this is resolved.

(!)

Brushing the message away I looked around and found a sharp rock on the ground and brought it to the Trigar body.

Vague memories of my dad, whose face was still a blank, showing me how to skin and butcher a deer coming to me. He had spent several years as a butcher before going back to school when I was little and taught both my brother and I a few things growing up.

The stone was a poor replacement for a knife and the skin was impossibly thick and tuff. I got a few screeches and cuts on my hands from the rough edges on the stone as I struggled, though they healed instantly.

Hours later the sun had gone down, and I finally finished skinning the body. It looked like crap and I needed to replace the stone five times because they either broke or worn blunt because of how hard it was to cut through the skin. I was also forced to change back into a bird a twice to recover my health

But in the end, I was left with a very ragged and poorly cut Trigar pelt covered in green blood that for some reason smelt like watermelon…I have no idea why the monster cat's blood smells like watermelon and I don't want to know why the monster cat's blood smells like watermelon. A lot of it had gone to waste due to the quality of my 'tools', but it was so large it didn't matter in the end. I used some snow to try and get some of the blood off, but it didn't help much.

Grimacing slightly at the feel of the blood on my skin, I tied the front legs around my shoulders in a ruff cloak. It wasn't perfect, but at least I don't feel as naked as before.

(!)

Note!

You have Acquired 'Poorly Made Winter Pelt'. Status Condition 'Cold' has been removed due to the effects of this item.

(!)

Poorly Made Winter Pelt: (Quality- Poor) Made from the coat of a Horned Winter Triger. It is of Poor Quality and will probably fall apart in a light breeze. (Effect) Wearer is immune to Natural cold conditions.

(!)

Bonus!

You have crated your first 'Item'.

You have Gained the Perk (Enchanter)!

(!)

Enchanter: (Perk) (Craft) The Ability to make 'Magic' items, depending on the materials used. The more Mana given to the Item the more effective it will be. (Note) you have no control over what the Item's ability/magic will be, it is dependent on the Materials used to crate it. (Note) Items are split into different Quality depending on the Materials used, and the quality of the finished product. (Note) Quality: Poor, Common, Good, Uncommon, Excellent, Rare, Legendary and Mythic. (Warning) Depending on the Quality of the finished item, you are limited on how mush Mana can be used in it. The highest possible amount of Mana is automatically added based on the Quality when it is finished.

(!)

On second thought, this is perfect. A glance at my Mana showed it only took 50 to make, though that is probably because of the poor quality.

A quick test by changing into bird form proved that my cloths changed with me, thankfully.

Taking a moment to stretch now that I am back in human for after almost two days as a Raven, my eyes turn to the skinless corpse with a wince before I start collecting wood for a fire.

Waste not want not…I guess.

9 Months Later

0o0

Nine months…that is a long time to be on your own. I mean I was never the most sociable person in my first life, but I am getting dangerously close to going crazy. I am really not in a good headspace right now. However, I do have Freddy to talk to. Freddy is my Rock. He's about the size of my fist and is perfectly smooth on the outside. I scratched a face on him so it's not weird or anything.

He is actually a really good listener, even if not much of a talker…like I said, not in a good place right now.

I have made some progress through, at least from a levelling point.

After that first Trigar, it was like the flood gates opened. Monster after monster stated to appear. Not just Triger either. There was a bird monster that looked like a vulture with two heads and leathery skin instead of feathers and four sets of wings called a 'Duo Raptor'. That one had been a little hard to deal with because I had to kill one head at a time, which I didn't find out about until after I killed the first and got close enough for the second to attack me.

There are also a hundred different kinds of dinosaur like monsters, all different and most having some kind of weapon growing out of their bodies naturally. I admit, I wasn't sure about going the Mind Screech route at first, but it has proven to be especially useful. It can't be blocked or dodged, and since every monster I have run into has a brain I haven't seen anything I can't kill with it.

The only problem is that it doesn't work on more than one target at a time, but since my Raven Form is so small it is easy to go unnoticed in the trees.

After being out in the wild so long my skin wasn't as pale anymore, the sun giving me a slight tan. Though the amount of dirt on my face made it look a little darker. My hair has also grown to reach my shoulders and I have a little fuzz growing on my face. Thanks to the wide range of Monsters I killed I was able to make some cloths to cover myself, though I am still limited by my lack of proper tools. I basically look like a caveman, covered in furs tied around my body to hold them in place. They are a little bulky, but I rarely fight in my Human form anyway, so it doesn't matter. I even made a few pouches to keep some of the plants I gathered in after I learned that if I focused enough, I could learn what they do.

Not having a Game Inventory means I need to actually carry everything around with me. I also made one for Freddy, so I don't lose him.

The only weapon I have is a hip bone I took from one of the Monsters I killed to use as a club. Having never used a sword or anything before I thought it best to keep it simple. Like I side it try not to fight in my human form, its mostly to use if I am caught off guard. It's about half my size and held on my back by a strip of fur I used as a as a rope. Unfortunately, because I didn't carve it or anything, it doesn't count as an Item I make so the Enchanter Skill didn't affect it.

So, nine months of sneak attacks and brain melting, and my stats are looking a lot better. At least compared to what they were before.

Level: 25 (4000/25,000)

Name: Raven Noctis

Health: (2800/2800)

Mana:(4400/4400)

Stats

Body: 12

Perception: 17

Mind: 17

Mana:44

Health: 28

Stat Points: 0

I split the Free Stats mostly between Mana and Health. Though I dumped 4 points into Body because it is my worst stat and I thought it couldn't hurt.

I know that most people say you should save your stats, but so far, the only way I have been able to raise them is through Points so there was no point. Also, I can't afford not to use them out in the wild, to many things that are stronger than me are trying to eat me.

Though my stats seem like nothing compared to my Skills. Repeated us has worked wonders for them.

Telepathy- (One Way): (Level- 81) (Active) The ability to push thoughts into other living creatures' minds (e.g. words, images, illusions). Cost: 10 (Warning) At current Level there is a (18%) chance for the target to break the connection. The chance is increased by 1% for every level the target is higher than you (Caps at 99%). If Connection is Broken by the target you will suffer a Backlash of -500 Mana.

Mind Screech: (Level- 64) (Mind Magic) (Active) A Psychic attack that forces a 'Mental Screech' into the target. Prolonged exposure to this Skill may cause the target to lose Consciousness. Cost: 5 per second (Note) Prolonged exposure to this Skill has a 50% of causing Temporary Blindness/Deafness/Confusion. 25% chance of 2 at once. 10% chance of all 3 at once. (Note) This Skill can be 'overloaded' to increase the damage the more mana used the stronger the effect. Cost: 300-3000. (Requirement) Mind Screech can only be used though line of sight and on a single target at a time.

To be honest the whole Nevermore Race perk thing is more overpowered then I thought it was when I picked the Mind Magic route. Between the experience and power boost, not to mention the second boost while in Raven Form, so far, I haven't met a monster that needed more than the minimum Mana requirement from the Mental Screech.

Then there are the new skills I got, 1 every 5 levels. The first four seemed normal enough, the most recent one was different.

Message: (Level- 24) (Mind Magic) (Active) Form a weak connection to all minds within a 2-mile radius. Cost: 3000 per Minute. This Connections is limited to words and flashes of images.

Ignored: (Level- 38) (Mind Magic) (Active) Project an Aura around you that makes other living things ignore your presence. This Skill works on multiple targets at the same time. Cost: 63 = 1 minute of being ignored. (Warning) This skill gets less effective the higher the Level the targets are compared to the level of the skill. Any action, such as attacking or purposely drawing attention, to yourself cancels out the skill. Any time remaining is lost if the Skill is cancelled, and the mana used is forfeited.

Illusion Clone: (Level- 31) (Mind Magic) (Active) Creates an Illusionary Clone of you. At current level you can create up to 31 clones at. Clones remain until they are dismissed or broken. Cost: 50 per Clone. (Note) You are able to take direct Control of a Clone, linking your mind to it to uses as a 'speaker'. Cost: 100 (Warning) You can only directly control 1 Clone at a time. If in Direct Control of a Clone, you must remain completely still or loose the connection. Clones cannot use Skills. Clones not real and cannot interact with the world. Clones will break from a single attack, no matter how weak said attack is.

Inverted World: (Level- 14) (Mind Magic) (Active) All living creatures within 7 Meters of you have their sense of direction flipped. (e.g. Left is right, up is down.) Cost: 500 per Minute. (Note) This Skill ignores Levels and cannot be broken. (Warning) If a Target leaves the Area of Effect, this Skill no longer Affects them.

All useful, though not really something that can do any damage. When combined they are exceptionally good for running away or causing confusion. Send out a few Clones while activating the Ignored Skill and I can slip away while whatever I am running from is chasing shadows. I haven't found much use for the message Skill yet, and because of the cost I don't use it as often as the others. Though Inverted World is both useful and funny. The sight of a giant monster stumbling around like its drunk and walking into things never gets old.

But it was the last Skill I got at Level 25 that was a little odd. It wasn't Mind Magic like the others I had gotten so far for one thing, nor did it have a level.

Curse of Whispers: (Curse) (Craft) Curses the Target to hear Whispers inside their head. Whispers can be directed when first cast but will eventually become random. Overtime the whispers will start to drive the target insane. Cost: 4000 per person, 1000 Per Item. (Note) This Curse can be used on both Living targets and Items. (Note)If used on an Item, that Item gains the CursedStatus and effects anyone touching the item. If used on an Item, the nature of the Whispers may be changed to fit that item. (e.g. a weapon will whisper to kill the affected persons friends or family). (Warning) If used-on a living Target, Curse is only effective if the Target is the same Level or Lower.

Like I said, it was a little odd. Focusing on the word Cursed brought up some information that helped explain it a little though.

(!)

Cursed: A Status that can be found on certain Items. Depending on the item and the person who cursed it, the curse can be stronger or weaker. (e.g. a curse on a gold ring will be stronger than a Curse on a Bronze ring.) All Cursed Items automatically gain a Compulsion Aura. This means that once someone touches them, it is extremely hard to put them down, though possible. The activation of the Curse depends on the Item. (e.g. rings/jewellery/cloths worn, Weapons drawn/used, food eaten, etc.). Those of a High Level or Strong Mind are able to ignore the effects of Cursed Items, depending on the quality of the Item and the Curse.

(!)

Seriously, what is with all these skills? It is like everything about my new Race is evil or something. Freddy thinks I should just accept it, but I am still unsure what to think.

I did use it to make Freddy a 'Cursed Whispering Rock' in the hopes it would make him talk more, but because of my Races natural immunity to Cursed Items it didn't change anything. Though Freddy liked the Upgrade, so it wasn't a complete waste.

Anyway, I am sure there are people wondering why I am only Level 25 after 9 months in a monster infested forest. Well the answer to that is simple. Every time I level it gets set back down to 0 and adds 1000 to reach the next level now while that might not seem too bad, there is also the fact that I get less experience for killing the same monster. The first time I killed a Trigar I got 500 experience, plus bonuses for every 10 levels it is stronger than me and all that, which only happened the first time. Now if I kill a Trigar, it only gets me 100 experience. Which is the same for all the Monsters I kill. No matter how much they give me the first time, if I kill another, I only get 100 experience.

Between the ever-growing level requirement and the small amount of experience I can get per kill, things started to slow down. Every time I level up it takes longer to reach the next. It is all getting a little stressful.

So, at Freddy's advice, I decided to take a little brake from grinding to do a little fishing.

Of course, I don't have bate, or a fishing rod, so I have to use my hands.

I had found a river in my first week, and after following it for a few miles found a shallow part that only goes up to my waist. I can't risk deeper water in fear of some of the giant monster fish, most of which can swallow me whole. My furs get a little heavy as they get wet, but I don't dare take them off in fear of the 'Cold' status being active. Even if they are wet as long as I have them on it keeps the negative status away, so I don't take them off.

The forest is oddly quiet today. I had already checked the area and found nothing stalking around. while a little strange, it isn't the first time. I have been standing completely still for the last half an hour, waiting as the river flows around me. I felt several fish bump into my legs but made no move to grab them and wait for one to swim through my hands.

Then it happened.

A fish swam through my hands and I grabbed it, lifting my hands out of the water at the same time. As this happened, I caught sight of something out of the corner of my eye coming out of the forest on my right and heading straight for me. whatever it is, it's small, extremely fast and near silent.

No time to change form and my bone club on my back, I did the only thing I could.

Turning on the spot I moved my hand to grip the fish I just caught above its tail and swung it around, hitting whatever was attacking me right in the head, causing the fish to explode from the force.

It was then I actually got a look at what I just 'fish-slapped', and all the blood drained from my face and my eyes widened in fear.

A woman, with long blue hair and eyes, and dressed in some kind of white Uniform, though no it was stained in fish blood and guts and at her waist is a rapier type sword. She is slightly taller than me, and I think her breasts are actually bigger them my head. She has a tattoo just above them, one that looks awfully familiar in an unbelievably bad way.

Above her head I saw the words that confirmed my doom.

We stood there in the waist deep water for about a minute, with me frozen in fear and Es-Bloody-death seeming in shock that I just slapped her in the face with a fish. Of course, the moment didn't last long, and I watched as a terrifying smile slowly started to spread across her lips and the shadow of her hat covered her eyes from sight.

Less than a second later a ball of ice the size of a melon formed in the air above her hand and shot straight at my face like a cannonball.

Like I side, a lot of World Building and set up in this chapter. Chapters from now on will have more of a story to them.

This chapter ended up being a lot longer than I thought it would be. Something about Gamer fics just seems to make chapters longer, and I don't think it is just the states padding it.

Yes, being along for an extended period of time has made him a little crazy, enough to start talking to a rock named Freddy. Now he is in the company of Esdeath…;)

Obviously, this is also an Oc/Esdeath Pairing.

Let me know what you think so far in a review.
