"I'm keeping this for now." Cindy said and raised her arm to show the web shooter she took from Miles's arm. Even with their normal suits back on, her web shooters were still gone. Miles didn't respond and simply followed her as she swung to a rooftop to get a better view of the skyline.
They stood in silence as they watched the skyline burn in flames and chaos. Screaming could be heard all around them. Sirens whaled out from miles away and helicopters whirled above them as they flew by.
She eventually looked at her dimension hopper and tapped around with it. She kept trying to do something with it until she started tapping furiously at it and slapped it before crossing her arms and letting out a sigh of frustration.
"Damn it." She muttered. "Mysterio did more to our hoppers. I can't get into contact with anyone. Luckily whatever is keeping us from glitching was untouched by him. Probably to play more of his dumb games with us later."
They stood in silence again and listened to the chaos that unfolded in front of them. Even without her speaking, Miles could feel the frustration coming off of her. She was breathing hard and loudly and her foot kept tapping. But Mike's could feel something else coming off of her as well. Anguish. About every three breaths of frustration she took, one would always shake a little like she wanted to scream and cry but refused to do so.
"You alright?" Miles eventually asked.
"Not right now kid." She said hastily.
"What happened?"
"Don't. Just don't. I don't wanna hear you right now." She said in an angry tone.
"What do you mean?"
"What do I mean?!" She suddenly shouted harshly and turned to face him. "You just couldn't stop him could you? You just let Mysterio toy around with you and you couldn't do anything about it! He could've been stopped but you're just too useless that you couldn't do anything about it! And now, the love of my life is dead because you couldn't kill him! You're just a kid Miles! Everyone thinks you're special and everything, but to me, you're just a useless kid who can't seem to do anything right and just relies on everyone else to clean up his mistakes! Everything is your fault!" She dropped on her knees and the tears that were due to fall bursted out. "He's gone. Miguel's gone." She sobbed mostly to herself.
Miles was shocked by her sudden accusations and the news.
Miguel was dead.
And it was because he couldn't stop Mysterio. Cindy was right. It was his fault.
"I-I'm so sorry." Miles stammered.
"Go away Miles, I just want to be alone right now." She said softly. The tears were free pouring right now and her head hung near her knees as the anguish took over her body.
Miles remained silent. He paused a moment to look at her again before swinging away. As he swung, the thought kept running all over his mind. Miguel was dead. He was an amazing leader during the fight against Morlun and always kept a cool head even as all hell would break lose. He was a great fighter, a born leader, and a great friend most of all.
And now he was dead.
And it was because I couldn't stop that bubble-headed lunatic. I just watched like an idiot as he tossed me around like I was a ball
He wanted to be angry that he got defeated so easily, but all Miles felt was uselessness. Ever since Gwen was gone, he couldn't do anything but just sit like a sack of potatoes as Mysterio toyed around with his feelings and life.
He couldn't stand this. He needed some place to think. Think of a way to get revenge. But all of this chaos was just a reminder of his failure. He needed a place where he could stay alone and sulk. As petty as it may sound, it was what he needed right now.
Miles decided that his house would be the best option. His parents would most likely be called to help out with all the destruction so they wouldn't be home to see him.
He arrived at his house and saw his dad's car still in the driveway.
Just my luck, dad is still home
The last thing Miles wanted right now were his parents trying to comfort their failure of a son. He quietly opened the window and slid in, praying that nobody would see him. Luckily, the streets were empty and nobody was nearby. He took off mask and looked at the reflection of his face bloodied up and bruised. Not the face of a fighter, just one of a disappointment and a kid. A kid who would let everyone down and ruin their lives because he couldn't stop anything.
He hated that fact. He hated being useless and a pain to everyone. He let out a yell of frustration, picked up the laundry basket full of laundry next to him, and threw it against the wall. It did little to cool him down but what else could he do? Fight Mysterio? All that would happen would be him getting rag dolled everywhere and cause even more pain to others.
He let out another yell and threw one of his sketch books against the wall. It fell helplessly to the floor. The cover and some pages fluttered open and showed an old sketch. Miles picked it up and looked at it. It was one of his older sketches of Gwen. The date at the corner dated a little after the collider incident. She was looking shyly at him with her head slightly down and pulling back a lock of hair, revealing a bright yellow sunflower tucked behind her ear. And on her face was the same small but warm smile she gave him right before jumping into the collider. It was most likely drawn during the phase of his crush over her, but it reminded him of those times when he could actually see her. Touch her, laugh with her, hug her, talk to her, and kiss her.
Those memories broke him down and he fell down to his knees, sobbing with tears pouring. "I'm so sorry Gwen." He cried.
The door suddenly opened and his dad's face. "Miles? Are you ok?"
Emotions took over his body and Miles ran over to his dad and hugged him tightly. His tears were staining the police uniform he was still wearing but he didn't care, he just needed to hug him. Hug him and hope some of his troubled feelings would go away.
"I'm so sorry." Miles cried.
His dad hugged him back but was still confused. "Sorry about what?"
"For letting all of you down so many times."
"What?" He pulled away but still placed his hands on Miles's shoulder and looked at his broken son. "Miles you never let me down. You never have and you never will. I know what you do is for good, and your intentions will never let me down."
Miles looked back at him. "But I'm never good enough! I can't stop a villain until they take someone I love and even after I stop them, they always come back and just keep ruining other people's lives and it always ends up being my fault!"
"Miles listen to me. What some of those people do out there you can't control. You can't be everywhere at once and saving everyone at the same time. You're just one person. You can't do it all."
Miles started to pull away. "You don't understand dad."
"Maybe he doesn't, but someone who knows what you do does." A voice said behind them.
Miles turned around to see Cindy crouching on his now open window frame.
"Who is that!" Jeff shouted and pulled out his gun.
"Dad relax, she's a spider." Miles gently pulled the gun down.
"Sorry about that, I'll use the doorbell next time." Cindy said and dropped down from the window. "Could you give us a minute?" She asked Jeff.
"Yeah sure." He holstered his gun and left the room. "Let me know if you need anything." He called out right before he left.
They sat in silence for a few awkward moments that seemed like an eternity to Miles.
"I'm sorry for acting the way I did back there." Cindy eventually said.
"What do you have to be sorry about? You were just telling the truth."
"Miles what I said were just a bunch of words said out of frustration. None of it was true and I didn't mean any of that."
"So what if you didn't mean it? You still said what I needed to hear." Miles's voice was starting to get louder.
Cindy sighed. "I know it isn't easy. Losing the person you loved. It just happened to me and it hurts like hell right now." She paused and looked at the window, regaining her composure before she spoke again. "But it isn't your fault. None of us knew who Mysterio was until it all happened. Then you thought he was gone for a while until all this happened. How do you expect to predict and stop all of this stuff."
"But I could've stopped him!" Miles shouted. He went on to explain everything that had just happened. From Liz's disappearance and all the way up to the present. Each phase was just another life scarring experience that would send anyone to insanity and was already doing the same to Miles. "I just let him throw me around! And now Miguel is gone because of that."
Cindy put her arm on his shoulder. "I don't blame you for anything. Especially not for the death of Miguel."
"He was the love of your life and was killed by the man who I could've stopped a long time ago!"
"Miles listen to me." She said in a stricter tone but made sure it was still gentle to not sound accusing like before. "So what if you couldn't stop him? I can't even count how many times I've been helpless against someone in a fight. You just have to learn from it and be stronger because of it. And what he did to Miguel, that is all his fault, and we are going to make sure he pays for it. But you can't beat yourself over it or else everything will just be worse. We all make mistakes, and sometimes, other people have to pay the price for them, but we have to learn from them, accept the consequence, and do our best to move on. It isn't easy, not by a long shot, but it's the only way we can come out of it as a better person."
"And what good could I do? Even if I get stronger I'm still no match for Shadow and Mysterio."
Cindy nearly laughed. "Miles you took down Morlun all by yourself and can take on all of those Inheritors by yourself. If anyone can take on those two, it's you."
Miles seemed hesitant. He wanted revenge. But he didn't want to cause more harm. Could he finally end all of this? Eventually, he nodded at her. "I'll try, but just promise that you'll do it with me."'
Cindy let out a small snork. "Believe me, I'd love nothing more than cracking that dome-shaped helmet."
"But where do we start?" Miles thought for a second but it finally hit him. Even through all that he went through, he still felt dumb that he didn't think of it. "Wait, since you're here and alive, doesn't that mean Gwen is too? Mysterio took you two at the same time so he must have planned to keep both of you together."
Cindy smiled at him. "About time you started thinking like that kid."
"Wait, you knew all along? Why didn't you tell me."
She let out a small laugh. "I knew it as I swung over. Depressed and mad you isn't really the person who listens unless it's encouragement though."
Miles rolled his eyes. "Whatever."
"It gives a starting point though. There's no way we traveled dimensions during our chase or during that uncloaking. Wherever she and Mysterio are, it has to be somewhere in this dimension."
"Let's get started then." Miles was already almost out of the window but Cindy stopped him.
"Not so fast kiddo. I'm making sure we get another pair of web shooters before we leave. No offense, but yours don't exactly fit me."
"Oh right." Miles looked at the one shooter on her wrist. It even looked like it was squeezing her. "We'll have to head to May's then."
"Lead the way."
As they swung, they never noticed the two people watching and listening in the dark sjadows.
"She actually knocked some sense into him. I'm surprised." One of the voices said
"Don't give too much credit." The other hissed. "They're both hurting more than they let on. It just takes a small tap and they'll be drowning in sorrow once again."
"Make sure I'm present when you do so." The other voice gave a small laugh after speaking.
"You do not make the requests. Now, make sure that the plan is ready."
"Yes Master Shadow." The other voice said in a droning tone, much different than he was just speaking in a second ago. He moved even deeper in the shadow, shot a web and started to swing away.
"And make sure you use the Peter charm you love chattering with." Shadow hissed loudly enough so Peter could hear him as he swung away.
