March 19th, 1989, 'While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.' 2 Corinthians 4:18 Parallel. These words resonate with me. I was never formally introduced into any form of religion by my parents, neither was Dale. However, I remember my mother telling me these words once as a way to look at the bigger picture of things in life. I may give my life for Dale but in the long run, Dale will get a second shot at life. I just only wish I could be there to share it with him…
"Chip, are you ready to go?" - Gadget asked as she peered into Chip n' Dale's room.
"Yes, Gadget." - Chip said as he set his journal and pen down with his Will and personal letter for Dale.
"Alright, let's do this." - Chip said as he led everyone onto the Ranger Plane.
"I'll be glad when Dale's back in good health and we can go out and have adventures again." - Monterey said.
Chip paused for a second thinking of a way to tell the truth of what really was going to happen at the hospital today.
"U-Um, I need to come clean about something to the both of you." - Chip said hesitantly.
"What's the matter Chippa?" - Monterey said as he turned and looked at Chip.
"There is a contingency to Dale's transplant surgery." - Chip said.
"What's the contingency, Chip?" - Gadget asked.
"In order for Dale to get the surgery they need a donor. However, donors are rare for Dale and I and it would require a deceased chipmunk to perform the surgery successfully. The doctor unfortunately said that they do not have any such thing so I volunteered to be Dale's donor." - Chip said.
"What!" - Gadget and Monterey blurted out.
"Blimey, you're willing to give up your life for Dale's?" - Monterey said in shock.
"Well I don't see any other options." - Chip said bluntly.
"Gee Chip, you can't do that. We need you, the Rescue Rangers' wouldn't be itself without you." - Gadget pleaded with Chip.
"And what? You'd think the Rescue Rangers' would be the same without Dale?" - Chip said as his tone changed to anger.
Monterey and Gadget looked at each other and then looked at Chip.
"Well you see Chippa-" - Monterey said before being cut off by Chip.
"No, what I see is two selfish people who would rather see Dale die a painful slow death than to let me die peacefully, saving him. I made a promise to my parents a long time ago that I would protect Dale at any cost, including giving my life for him and I'm not giving up the promise for no one." - Chip said in rage.
"But-" - Gadget said.
"No buts, Gadget. I've made up my mind. I'm saving Dale regardless if it's the last thing I do." - Chip said as he crossed his arms.
Monterey and Gadget gave up as they knew Chip wasn't changing his mind. The Ranger Plane then landed at the hospital.
"Ah, good you're here just as I expected you. Take these and go get changed. The nurse will prep your IV and start the sedation process." - Dr. Moleson said in a hurry as he passed Chip a hospital gown.
"I'm not doing anything until I can see my brother one last time." - Chip said bluntly.
"U-Um, sure, of course. He's in the room at the end of the hall." - Dr. Moleson said as he pointed to Dale's room.
As Chip entered Dale's room, Dale looking pale and hooked up to oxygen glimpsed at Chip and gave a smile.
"I'm glad you came, Chip. I was worried I wasn't going to see you before my surgery." - Dale said softly.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, Dale." - Chip said as he took Dale's hand.
Dale smiled as he took Chip's hand.
"It will be nice when I can breath on my own again." - Dale said softly.
Chip Smiled back at Dale.
"I know it will be, Dale. I'm happy for you." - Chip said.
Dr. Moleson then entered the room.
"Mr. Oakley, it is time. I need you to come with me." - Dr. Moleson said.
Chip then let go of Dale's hand and walked over and gave Dale a hug,
"I love you Dale, always remember that." - Chip said as he stood back and walked over to the door.
"I love you too, Chip." - Dale said as he fought to hold back tears.
Chip then went into another hospital room and put on the gown and laid in the bed being prepped for the surgery. Once prepped, the nurse injected the sedation medication and started to wheel Chip down the hall where they stopped just before the operating room to say goodbye to Monterey Jack and Gadget.
"I-I just wanted to say thank you to the both of you for everything you have done for me and Dale, and I'd ask while I'm gone that you'd look out for him and take care of him like I would." - Chip said as he started to slur his words.
"Of course Chippa will make sure Dale is well cared for." - Monterey said.
"And Gadget… I-I never got to tell you that I-" - Chip said before Gadget put her finger over Chip's mouth.
"I know Chip, I know." - Gadget said as she embraced Chip with a passionate kiss.
Chip stared stunned and then reached out his hand to Gadget.
"Thank you." - Chip mumbled as he drifted slowly asleep, the grip of his hand weakening."
"Good bye, Chip." - Gadget said as tears began to fall.
The nurse then rolled the hospital bed with Chip lying stiff, unconscious into the operating room where Dr. Moleson prepared the tools for the surgery.
Everything was black in Chip's mind, that was until he saw a light in the distance and heard the voice of what sounded like his father.
"Chip!" - the voice called to Chip.
"Dad?" - Chip turned confused at where the echoed voice was coming from.
As Chip walked closer to the light he was greeted by his father.
"W-What are you doing here?" - Chip stumbled over his words at the sight of his father.
"Don't worry Chip, you're safe. I heard what you are doing for Dale and I wanted to say I'm proud of you." - Chip's father replied as he put his hand on Chip's shoulder.
"But Chip, remember what I told you." - Chip's father said as he knelt down.
"What's that?" - Chip asked confused at the question.
"Good things come to those who wait." - Chip's father said.
Inside the operating room, Dr. Moleson picked up the knife and prepared for the extraction faze of the surgery. Just as the blade gently touched Chip's chest the doctors assistant bursted into the room.
"STOP!" - the assistant shouted.
"Egad Rodney! What is the meaning of this?" - Dr. Moleson said as he set the blade down.
"There was a car accident, a chipmunk didn't make it. The bottom half of his torso is destroyed but his chest area seems to be untouched." - Rodney said as he tried to catch his breath from the running.
"Well bring him in here, right away. Nurse, put Mr. Oakley in room 5-B." - Mr. Moleson instructed.
"Alright, lets try this again." - Dr. Moleson said as he picked up the knife.
As the nurse wheeled Chip into the hospital she informed Monterey and Gadget of what occured and that Chip was going to live. Both were ecstatic to hear the news. While the doctor continued the procedure it went on for over two hours and then Dale was sewn up and wheeled into the room where Chip was.
"So when can we expect them to wake up?" - Gadget asked the doctor.
"Hard to tell, it will most likely be Chip, Dale will gradually become awake in given time. However, it is hard to give an exact timeframe." - Dr. Moleson explained as he left the room to leave Gadget and Monterey sitting next to the beds.
As hours went by, Dale was the first to wake up who seemed surprised that Chip was laying next to him, however was later explained what Chip had tried to do. Dale was shocked but was glad to see his best friend still alive. A day went by before Chip woke up.
"W-Where am I?" - Chip mumbled as he scanned the room to see that all of the Rangers' were there.
"You're in the hospital, Chip." - Dale said as he nugged Chip's shoulder lay next to him.
"But how? The doctor said I wouldn't survive the surgery." - Chip said in confusion.
"Well lucky for you Mr. Oakley, we got a last minute donor to cover for you." - Dr. Moleson explained.
"I'm just glad to have you back Chip." - Dale said as he put out his hand.
"Me too, Dale. me too." - Chip said as he shook Dale's hand.
The End.
(Let me know if I should edit the ending, I have an alternative idea in mind but for the time being this ending is sufficient to the story. Please leave a review on your thoughts of the story!)
