Chapter 13: The Madarin Island Miss-Match!

After winning the Sea Ruby badge, they arrived at the Grapefruit Islands which were filled with some of the best fruit in all the Orange Islands, but unfortunately a wild Snorlax was eating all the fruit and going from island to island eating it all. With the help of our good friend the singing Jigglypuff she had managed to put Snorlax to sleep allowing Ash to catch it before he fell under the effects of Sing himself.

The group's next adventure through the Orange Island's now takes them to Murcott Island. Which is known for housing plenty of Bug-type Pokémon. Much to Misty's horror where they found a wild but old Scyther as it was kicked out of its group. So Tracey decided to cheer the now depressed Pokémon up. Unfortunately Scyther's pride was hurt because he was the previous leader of the group but was kicked out by a challenger. But little did they know, Team Rocket had a run-in with Scyther's swarm which resulted in the Scyther getting captured and Jessie getting a bad haircut. Once they caught wind of this, Scyther knew he had to fight them to not fight for his leadership place back in the swarm, but to save his old comrades. After defeating Team Rocket, Scyther's swarm acknowledges him and give him their respect before he chose to go back to Tracey, the only one who helped him when he lost everything.

We now find ourselves on Mandarin Island, where the group were taking a break from their sailing.

Ash finally now decided to change his current team for a new one.

We now see Ash was battling a trainer and their Butterfree.

"Finish it Bulbasaur, Solar Beam!" Ash said.

"Bulba!" Bulbasaur fires a powerful beam of sunlight shooting Butterfree out of the sky.

"Free!" Butterfree fell to the floor with swirls in its eyes.

"Oh man Butterfree." Butterfree's trainer said running over.

"Man Ash has been on fire with these battles." Tracey said.

"He really wants to be prepared for his third Gym Battle." Misty said.

The guy returns Butterfree. "Hey, nice battle. That Butterfree of yours was good." Ash offered his hand.

"Thanks, so's that Bulbasaur of yours." His opponent said smiling. "But we'll get stronger so I can beat you next time."

"I'll be waiting." Ash smiles as they walked away. "Great job Bulbasaur." Ash said petting him.

"Bulbasaur." The grass starter smiled.

"You've really impressed me Ash, that's like your 10th victory today." Tracey said.

"Yeah you gotta be tired by now." Misty said.

"Yeah I should probably take everyone to the Pokémon Center we can grab some lunch on the way over." Ash suggests.

"Pika." Pikachu sighed holding his belly, indicating he was starving.

"Bulbasaur." Bulbasaur agreed saying, "Yeah I can eat".

"The Pokémon have spoken. Lunch it is." Misty smiles.

After having their Pokémon treated, the gang were sitting down at a patio of the Pokémon Center for lunch.

"2 badges and 3 Z-Crystals. Man I'm on a roll." Ash smiles eyeing them. Misty then came in.

"Sorry if I took so long, had to call home." She said.

"Was there a problem?" Ash asked.

"Nah, just wanted to do little team rotation like you." Misty said as she had new Pokeballs.

"Who did you bring?" Tracey asks.

Misty throws the new balls into the air. "Come on out everyone!"

Out appearing on the beach was Seadra, Poliwrath and Blastoisetwo.

"Incredible, the patterns on this Blastoise remind me of the ones on Ash's Venasaur." Tracey said.

"Yeah Misty, you got one heck of a water type powerhouse." Ash said.

"Speaking of powerhouses, I bet you used that and your Gyarados you could probably give Ash a challenge." Tracey said.

Misty flinches. "I'm uh..I'm not sure."

"Still too nervous?" Ash asks.

"You could say that." Misty sighed.

"I understand having a Gyarados can be problematic, does it not listen to you?" Tracey asked.

"No, it listens great in fact he even gets along with Togepi." Misty admits.

"Then why you don't like it?" Ash asked as Misty was nervous to say. "Come on Misty, you can tell us."

"Yeah we won't think otherwise of what you say." Tracey said.

"Because...because I'm afraid of Gyarados." Misty admits surprising them.

"You? Scared of a Water Pokemon?" Tracey asks.

"No just Gyarados. It...happened when I was a kid." Misty said.

"What happened?" Ash asks.

Misty took a deep breath and explained. "You see when I kid I saw a sleeping Gyarados and when I crawled up to its mouth right when it woke up and it almost swallowed me. Now whenever I see when I'm scared that if I get anywhere near one I'm afraid it'll try and eat me like the last one did."

Ash and Tracey stared at her with open jaws as they were shocked and horrified with disbelief.

"Misty...I am so sorry." Ash said trying to comfort her.

"No wonder you're so scared. I wouldn't be able to even look at one if I went through that." Tracey said.

"Yeah and now having a Gyarados with me just really gets me in the wrong way.." Misty said staring at the Mewtwo Ball. Soon all her clone and regular Pokémon gathered around her to comfort her.

"And yet you have it with you, maybe there's a part of you that wants to overcome this fear." A female voice said.

Looking over the three of them gasp to see a beautiful woman with long purple hair and glasses.

"Oh. My. God! You're-You're.." Misty stuttered with wide eyes.

"You're Lorelei!" Tracey said continuing for her.

"Of the Elite 4!" Ash finished. They couldn't believe one of the strongest Pokémon Trainers of Kanto was here.

"Sorry for eavesdropping on your conversation but I thought you could use a little extra help." Lorelei apologizes.

"Me? Help?" Misty pointed to herself.

"I heard your story and I am truly sorry for your trauma, but every Pokemon is different and I think deep down your Gyarados is hoping for your acceptance." Lorelei said.

Misty pulled out the ball again. "I dunno."

"Why don't you join me for lunch? I'm currently meeting with another trainer who is dealing with her own tough situation." Lorelei offers.

"Oh sure, we don't mind at all." Misty said agreeing to it, without letting Ash and Tracey a word in this.

'Could you at least give us a right to say in any of this?' They thought sweatdropping.

Walking to a very nice restaurant, they waited at a table outside.

"She should be here any minute." Lorelei said looking around.

"What's this trainer you've met like?" Tracey asked.

"Very determined and strong, but she lost when she entered the Champion League." Lorelei said.

"She lost the Champion League? Aw that's too bad." Ash said.

"She made it pretty far. She even beat me." Lorelei said surprising them.

"No way." They said.

"What's a matter Ash? Do you doubt my skills?" A familiar voice asks.

Looking up at the entrance Ash saw the trainer was none other than. "Leaf!"

"Long time no see guys." Leaf said sitting down with them.

"What are you doing in the Orange Islands?" Misty asked.

"I needed a change of scenery. I lost to Bruno in the Champion League." Leaf sighs in defeat.

"Dang, I'm sorry to hear that." Ash frowned. "I thought you would definitely win."

"What happened?" Misty asks.

"Well I had worked hard and after I managed to beat Lorelei I really felt good about myself, but Bruno...he made things really difficult." Leaf said.

"Yes Bruno is a master of Fighting Type Pokémon." Lorelei said. "So he knows much about getting to the opponents weaknesses."

"I came at him with everything I had but it was a struggle." Leaf said.

Flashback:

Leaf was facing Bruno in the Champion League and both of them were down to their last Pokemon.

On Bruno's side of the field was Machamp and Leaf had her Blastoise.

Leaf had her teeth grit as she was sweating anxiously seeing Blastoise was panting slightly.

"Machamp!" Bruno's Machamp looked like he wasn't tired at all.

"What's the matter young lady? Where's all the confidence you had battling Lorelei?" Bruno said.

"It's right here! Blastoise Hydro Pump!" Leaf said as Blastoise fires two streams of water at Machamp.

"Light Screen!" Machamp formed a wide screen in front of him as Hydro Pump hits it, dealing with only half damage. "Now Machamp, Dynamic Punch!" One of Machamp's fists glowed as he charged.

"Quick Withdraw!" Leaf said, but Blastoise was too late as Machamp quickly punched him in the gut with great force.

Flying backwards Blastoise crashes into the ground.

"Blast.." He groaned.

"Blastoise no!" Leaf gasps.

"Blastoise is unable to battle! Machamp wins! The winner is Elite 4 member Bruno!" The ref announced.

Leaf fell to her knees in shock at her defeat. "Blastoise..Return." She recalls her defeated starter.

"Do you know what went wrong?" Bruno asks as he and Machamp walked up to her. "You tried going in with a team that had an advantage rather than a team that was balanced. And when you're Pokemon aren't balanced neither is the trainer. You had a balance when you beat Lorelei but not this time."

Leaf stayed silent as those words were in her head as she looked down ashamed.

Flashback End:

"Oh man, Leaf I am so sorry." Ash said.

"Bruno was never one to pull his punches." Lorelei said sipping her drink.

"I really thought I had him, but I ended up the one getting beaten." Leaf sighed lying on her hand on the table.

Reaching out Ash put his hand on her shoulder.

"Hey you're gonna be okay." Ash smiles.

"Thanks for the support." The girl smiled softly. "But enough about me, what are you still doing here in the Orange Islands. I thought you just had to get a Pokéball for Prof. Oak?"

"There's been a change of plans. While I'm here, I decided to compete in the Orange League." Ash said.

"Hmph couldn't shy away from a challenge huh?" Leaf smirks.

"Says you." Ash smirked back.

"By the way I don't think I've met you before." Leaf said looking to Tracey.

"I'm Tracey and I'm a Pokémon Watcher." Tracey said.

"Tracey's been a big help guiding us around these islands." Ash said.

"And if you wanna know where Brock is, he decided to stay on Valencia Island." Misty said.

"He got a job helping Prof. Ivy so he could learn about the Pokémon here." Ash said.

"Oh well good for him." Leaf said.

As the waitress brought their food over all of them sat down and enjoyed their lunch.

"So um, Lorelei? Can I ask why are you here in the Orange Islands?" Misty asked.

"Well during the off season when I'm not busy, I come here to train here." She said. "I have a house just way out in the city."

"After I lost to Bruno I needed to pull myself together and I ran into Lorelei as she was coming here after the Champion League and let me come with her." Leaf said.

"Well that's nice. Was your training doing good since you got here?" Ash asked.

"It's improving." Leaf said.

"Same with me. After that lost to you, I knew I had to get better." Ash said. "And the Orange Islands have been really grateful for it." Ash said showing Leaf his badges.

"Very impressive Ash, that means you're halfway there." Leaf said.

"Oh yeah, and check this out." Ash pulls out his Z-Crystals.

This time it was Lorelei's turn to be impressed as she saw all three Z-Crystals in front of her.

"My my." She said. "Waterium Z, Fightium Z and Electrium Z. You've really must be a talented trainer if you managed to hold the power of Z-Moves in your possession."

"You know about Z-Moves?" Ash asks as Lorelei reaches into her pocket and pulled out a white Z-Crystal surprising them.

"You have one too?!" They gasped.

"Icium Z. Tell me Leaf do you think if you had something like this your battle with Bruno would have ended differently?" Lorelei asks.

"Probably." Leaf said.

"Well what if I put this up as a prize between you and Ash? Whoever wins gets it." She offered.

This surprised both trainers. "You're serious?"

"Seems like something that could benefit either one of you." Lorelei said.

The two then looked at each other.

"I could use a rematch." Ash grins.

Leaf grinned too. "It's gonna end up like last time."

"Oh boy, here we go again." Misty sweatdrops.

"While those two work out their battles why don't you and I see what we can do about you and your Gyarados?" Lorelei suggests.

Misty cringed, seeing how she didn't forget. "Oh uh sure.."

After lunch, Ash and Leaf were standing across from each other on the beach.

"So Leaf how many Pokémon should we use this time?" Ash asks.

"Why don't we make this one a Double Battle?" She said confusing him.

"A Double Battle?" He asked.

"We each use 2 Pokémon each whoever manages to bring both Pokémon down is the winner." Leaf said.

"Sounds good to me." Ash nods.

The battle then officially begun.

"Venomoth, Jolteon you're up!" Leaf throws a Venomoth and the electric evolved form of Eevee.

"Pikachu, Persian I choose you!" Ash said calling out his cat and mouse duo.

"Jolt." Jolteon said acknowledging Pikachu.

"Pika." Pikachu said with sparks ready.

"Well this looks familiar." Leaf smirks.

"This is gonna be WAY different than last time, right guys!" Ash said.

Both Pikachu and Persian call out ready for it.

"Venemoth Gust!" Leaf said as Venemoth flapped its wings creating a powerful wind.

"Stand your ground you two!" Ash says as Pikachu and Persian sinked their claws in the sand.

"Now Jolteon Double Kick!" Riding the wind Jolteon leaps in and kicks both of Ash's Pokémon at once.

"Pikachu, Iron Tail! And Persian, Shadow Claw!" Ash said.

With a glowing tail Pikachu charged in while darkness surrounded Persian's claws.

"Both of you, Agility!" Leaf said. Jolteon and Venomoth both dashed out of harm's way.

"Persian follow Venemoth! Pikachu go after Jolteon!" Both of Ash's Pokémon followed after Leaf's trying to catch them with their own speed.

"Venemoth Psybeam!"

"Dodge it!" Leaping over Psybeam, Persian slashes Venemoth across the chest.

"Pikachu, Quick Attack!" Pikachu leaped and tackles Jolteon.

"Jolteon shake it off and use Pin Missile!" From the spikes Jolteon fires multiple needles.

"Dodge it then use Slam!" Ash said. Jumping over the needles Pikachu wraps his tail around Jolteon.

"Oh no you don't! Double Team!" Leaving a copy in her place Jolteon dodged Slam.

"Pika?!" Pikachu looked to see he was surrounded by Jolteon.

"Don't panic Pikachu, use Thundershock on all of them!" Ash said.

"Pika!" Pikachu releases jolts of electricity zapping all the copies.

As he finished, the real Jolteon had disappeared.

"Now Shadow Ball!" Rushing in the real Jolteon blasts Pikachu with a sphere of darkness.

Knocking him back. "Hang in there buddy!" Ash said as he turned to Persian and Venomoth's battle.

"Veno!" Venomoth releases Sleep Powder.

"Use Dig!" Ash said. Digging a hole in the ground Persian dodges the blue powder.

"Venomoth, Fire Energy Ball on the ground!" Leaf said.

"Venomoth!" Venomoth fired green spheres of energy one by one on the ground to cause tremors.

Bursting out of the ground Persian flinches in pain as he shook off the damage from the attack.

"Now use Silver Wind!" Leaf said. Venomoth flaps its wings, sending a gust of bright wind at Persian.

"Persian use Slash to stand your ground!" Digging his claws into the ground Persian took the attack without getting blown away.

"Now Icy Wind!" Ash said. Persian screeches as a powerful gust of ice appeared which strikes Venomoth.

"Veno!" Venomoth screams in pain. Leaf watched Venomoth's wings started to get encased with Ice. "Not good." Leaf gasps.

Venomoth started to descend slightly, but it tried it's best to stay in the air.

"Yes, thanks to Icy Wind, Venemoth's speed has gone down." Ash grins.

"Lucky." Leaf growled. "Venomoth, Signal Beam, Jolteon Thunder Wave!"

Both Pokémon unleash their attacks and Signal beam mixes with Thunder Wave making the electricity multi-colored.

"Woah Pikachu, Persian get out of the way!" Ash said.

Helping Persian get his claws out of the ground both Pokemon leaped out of the way.

And a explosion of black occurred. "That was close." Ash sighed with relief.

"I learned that while I was here Ash, what you think!" He heard Leaf call out.

"Wow, Leaf you're still the amazing girl who keeps me on my toes." Ash admits.

"And I can do more than that!" She said with a teasing wink. A soft blush appeared on Ash's face when he saw that. "Let's show'im you two, Venomoth! Hidden Power!" Leaf said. A bunch of white circles appear in front of Venomoth and they morph with it and it shines brightly, releasing light beams as they nail Persian, making him yelp.

"Persian!" Ash gasps.

"Now Jolteon Double Kick!" Dealing two kicks Jolteon knocks Pikachu into Persian knocking both Pokemon to the ground.

"Guys, get back up, please!" Ash said.

"Pika.." Pikachu growled as he staggers to get into his feet. As Persian growled doing the same.

"Wow, Leaf's really improved since the Indigo League." Misty said impressed.

"And she beat Ash? I see it." Tracey said finishing his sketch of Leaf's Pokémon doing their attacks.

"This battle isn't over yet. I have a feeling Ash is ready to fight back." Lorelei said.

"Well Ash, I see something here. It's still the same as it did back at the Indigo Plateau." Leaf said, making Ash look up at her.

"No it isn't because I've been working hard hoping for when I would have the chance to battle you again and I am not gonna waste it." Ash said determined.

"Really now? Cause both Pikachu and Persian look like they're about to collapse." Leaf points out.

"You see Leaf, my Pokemon and I agree on one thing more than anything...we hate losing!" Ash said as both Pikachu and Persian stood up emphasizing his point.

"Jolteon Thunderbolt! Venemoth Psybeam!" Leaf said making another combination attack.

"Pikachu, Volt Tackle! Persian, Water Pulse and go through it!" Ash said, surprising Leaf.

"Pika!" Pikachu coated himself with electicty as he charges with Persian formed a sphere of Water in his paws as they began to penetrate the combination attack.

Using this opening that Persian gave, Pikachu leaped through the explosion and charged towards Jolteon and Venemoth.

"PIKA!" He crashes into Venomoth as the bug type cried out from the electricity.

"Vene!" Venemoth screams falling to the ground with swirly eyes.

"Venomoth!" Leaf gasped.

"Now Persian Slash!" Leaping out from behind Pikachu Persian slashes Jolteon with glowing claws.

"Jolt!" Jolteon cried out.

"No way, we're being jumped 2 at once!" Leaf glares. "Jolteon, Use Wild Charge!" Jolteon growled as she runs and body then her becomes surrounded by yellow electricity, and it tackles Persian.

"Persian!" Ash said as Persian crashes to ground.

"Purr.." He groaned with swirls in his eyes.

"Now both of them are down to just one Pokemon." Tracey said.

"Pikachu and Jolteon. Just like last time." Misty said.

Ash and Leaf returned Venomoth and Persian.

"Pikachu let's do this!" Ash said.

"Pika!" Pikachu said pumped.

"Jolteon, Thunder!" Leaf said. Jolteon cried out and sends a powerful blast of electricity at Pikachu.

"Pikachu Iron Tail!" Using his metal tail as a lightning rod he absorbed the attack.

"Woah look at that!" Tracey said as the electricity formed around Pikachu as it boosted up his Electric powers.

"Now Thunderbolt!" Ash said as Pikachu used the boost from Thunder to amplify Thunderbolt. The powered up Thunderbolt began to destroy the sandy path in front of him.

"Jolteon Light Screen!" Creating a barrier it absorbed most of the attack but the rest sent Jolteon flying backwards.

"Hey Leaf!" Ash called out as he pulls out his Z-Ring. "Wanna see what the power or Z-Moves are like?!" He said putting Fightium Z on it.

"Huh?" Was all Leaf could say as she was scared to see.

Ash and Pikachu then gets in a stance as they remembers seeing Danny and his Machoke doing this. They did a series of synchronized air punches to build up Z-Power and the power went from Ash to Pikachu. "Consider this from the both of us, payback from the Indigo League! Pikachu, All-Out Pummeling!"

"Pika!" Pikachu roars shooting multiple kicks and punches before surrounding himself with orange light and charges ramming into Jolteon.

Jolteon got striked one by one with many multiple glowing hands. "Jolteon!" Leaf gasped at the brutal power.

"Now Pikachu, end it!" Ash yelled. Pikachu spun his tail around as he slaps it across Jolteon's face, sending her flying and landed in front of her trainer.

(Song end)

"Jolt." Jolteon groans with swirly eyes.

They..they did it. They finally beaten Leaf!

"N-No way." Leaf said as Ash and Pikachu burst into cheers of joy.

"We did it, we actually beat her!" "PiPikachu!"

"Wow Ash, that was incredible." Leaf said walking over.

"I told you, I wasn't slacking off while I was here." He smiled.

"Guess I really need to step up my game if you can beat me now." Leaf smirks.

"Oh yeah, now we're even." Ash grinned.

"Pikachu." He nodded.

"Well Ash a deal is a deal. You've earned this." Lorelei said handing him the Z-Crystal.

"Icium Z." Ash stared at it before holding it with a smile. "Thank you Lorelei."

"And Leaf, I hope you learned from this battle as well." Lorelei said.

"Yes, I still have alot to learn." Leaf admits.

"Leaf just remember you learn much more from failure than success. From your defeat you will grow and when you challenge Bruno again I know you will win." She smiles.

"Thank you." The girl smiles as she picked up her Jolteon.

Misty smiles at this but when Lorelei turns to her she gulps seeing she wasn't getting out of this.

"Alright Misty, it's your turn." She said.

Misty gulps as she slowly reached for the Mewtwo Ball. "Come on out Gyarados."

She opened up the ball and out in the water appeared her clone Gyarados. Gyarados lets out a road upon release causing Misty to flinch.

"Toge." Togepi smiles not scared in the slightest.

"That's a strong Gyarados you got there." Leaf said clearing her ear out from its outburst.

"Misty let's try something simple. Give me your hand." Lorelei said as she held Mistys hand up towards Gyarados causing her to turn pale. "Don't be scared. Let him come to you."

Her Gyarados began to slowly make its way towards them.

Everyone held their breath before Gyarados places his head on Misty's hand allowing her to pet him.

And Misty for the first time in her life, heard it purr.

"You see? He wants to form a connection. He trusts you." Lorelei said

"Y-You're not upset with me?" Misty asked Gyarados.

Gyarados roars softly saying he would never hurt a friend.

He lowers his head. "TogeToge!" Togepi hopped onto of him.

"Togepi!" Misty jumped onto Gyarados's head too.

Looking up Ash Tracey smile at how Misty was facing her fears.

Misty looked at how nice the island looked ontop of Gyarados's head.

"Wow. This is way different than riding Lapras." Misty said. Gyarados then roared up to her, asking if she wanted to be like this more often. "Sounds doable." Misty smiles.

"Wow Lorelei how did you know what Misty would need to help her?" Tracey asks.

"Gyarados are known to be ferocious Pokémon true, but they need a trainer that can calm their fiery behavior. Take Misty for example." Lorelei pointed as she sees Misty was actually having fun. "When she was scared of Gyarados, she didn't even think about releasing him or snap at him. And have you ever seen Gyarados on a rampage?"

"No." Ash answered.

"Exactly, because they never attack unless they feel threatened and with Misty that Gyarados doesn't feel threatened." She explains.

"Wow, no wonder she's in the Elite 4." Ash said amazed by her knowledge. "She's an expert."

As the sun was setting Lorelei was showing Ash the movements for Icium Z as Misty came back ashore with Gyarados.

"Do you think you've gotten all handled down?" She asked.

"It'll still take some practice, but yeah I think I could get used to having Gyarados around." Misty smiles.

"Everyone is afraid of something Misty, but with the right help, they can be overcome. Especially if you have good friends like them helping you out." Lorelei said.

"Thank you so much Lorelei." She bowed, thanking for the knowledge

"Well Ash, don't let this win go to your head. Be ready for round 3." Leaf said.

"Don't confuse me for Gary now Leaf." Ash said.

Smirking Leaf playfully nudges him. "You are definitely not Gary."

"You on the other don't let Bruno's lost get to you." Ash said.

"I won't." Leaf said as she gave Ash a hug goodbye. "See you round Ash."

Blushing softly, Ash smiles and hugs back. "You too Leaf."

The purple haired Ice Type Trainer smiled seeing this.

With the reuniting of their old friend Leaf, Ash obtaining Icium Z and helping Misty to overcome her fear of Gyarados our heroes now continue on towards Ash's third gym badge.

Misty Meets her Match!

After their adventures on Mandarin Island, we find the gang on a ferry boat now heading towards the next Orange Island Gym, which was located on Trovita Island.

"There it is guys." Ash smiles.

"Hey what are all those things around the island?" Misty points to multiple things around the island.

"They're rocks that were formed millions of years ago when Trovita Island rose from the ocean." Tracey explains.

"I wonder what the Trovita Island Gym Leader is like?" Misty asks.

"I wonder what Z-Move they use?" Ash said.

But before they could talk some more, Pikachu's ears twitched and taps Ash on his head. "Hey what's wrong Pikachu?"

"Pikapika!" He points to the water, towards something. Looking to where he was pointing, they spot a little girl and a Seel caught in the strong currents around whirlpools.

"Help!" She cried for help.

"Oh no that little girl!" Misty gasps.

"If we don't hurry she could be sucked into the whirlpool!" Tracey said.

Misty looked to any of her Pokéballs, and picked out the one she decided to choose. "Poliwrath, help me out!" She threw out her newly caught Poliwrath.

On the island, a man with brown hair was running around. "Mahri? Mahri where are you?!" He looks into his binoculars to see Misty jumping from the ferry and onto Poliwrath as they dived into the sea.

As the girl and Seel were about to be sucked under Misty and Poliwrath grabbed them before bringing them to Ash and Lapras.

"Wow, she's amazing." He said amazed.

"That was way too close. What were you doing out there?" Ash asks as they arrived at the docks.

"I was swimming with Seel, near the beach but the ocean pulled us out." The girl said.

"You have to be careful in the ocean. You always should have someone with you." Misty said.

"Yeah the sea's a crazy place if you don't know what you're doing." Ash said. Stopping at the docks, they see the man from earlier and a group of people running behind him.

"Mahri!" He smiles.

"Rudy!" Mahri smiles running over and hugging him.

"Never go swimming alone again." Rudy said.

"I'm sorry I worried you." Mari said as the others came up to them.

"I cannot thank enough for rescuing my sister." The boy named Rudy said.

"Hey it was no trouble at all." Ash said as Rudy walked past him and right to Misty.

"May I ask your name?" He asks.

"My name's Misty." She said.

"Misty, you are truly breathtaking." Rudy said making the 3 look at him shocked. He snapped his fingers and many guys handed her a bouquet of flowers.

"Ash did I miss something?" Tracey asks.

"No I am equally confused." Ash said.

"Maestro." Rudy snapped his fingers again as one of the servants played music on a stereo. "Would you care to dance?" Rudy asked Misty as he handed Togepi to Ash, and held Misty by the hand surprising her.

"What is going on here?" Ash asks as the two of them started dancing.

"Misty I could tell by the way you saved my Sister you're a skilled Water Pokémon trainer. I'd be honored if you stayed awhile and instructed the trainers at my gym." Rudy asks surprising her.

"Gym? You mean you're the Trovita Island Gym Leader?!"

"Why yes, is it such a shock?" Rudy laughed lightly.

"This guy is the Gym Leader?" Ash said surprised. "Well I'm here to win a badge and Z-Crystal." Ash said but Rudy just ignored him.

"And you're not just a great trainer, you're a great dancer too." Rudi compliments her.

"Uh hello?" Ash sweatdropped.

"Pika.." Pikachu sweatdrops.

"Rudy, I think he wants to ask you something." Mahri said finally getting his attention.

"Oh...who are you guys?" Rudy asks noticing Ash and Tracey for the first time.

"You're now seeing us?!" The two exclaimed.

"So you think you can challenge me? I only give my badge and Z-Crystal to ones who have what it takes." Rudy said.

"Well take a look at this." Ash said showing his badges and Z-Crystals.

"Ooh he must be strong." Mahri said surprised at Ash's Arsenal.

"Alright Ash, I'll admit I'm impressed, but before you can challenge me you have to pass a test." Rudy said.

"Alright, I accept." Ash nodded taking the challenge.

"Good luck Ash." Mahri said.

"Thank you." Ash said.

"You're gonna need it to beat my brother." Mahri said. Making Ash almost faulter, seeing how she shows favoritism for her old sibling.

Soon they were all sitting on a boat while Ash stood at the front of it.

"I'll agree to battle you but only if you can get your Pokémon to hit every single one of the targets that come up at us." Rudy said driving the engine.

"Fine by me." Ash said as a target appeared. "Pikachu Thunderbolt!"

"Pika!" Pikachu said zapping the target destroying it.

"How do you like that, Rudy?" Ash asks turning around only to see Rudy was flirting with Misty again.

"Your eyes are like diamonds, but you're are more beautiful." He said.

"This is getting old really fast." Ash said. It was starting to get abit annoying. "Bulbasaur, Persian help me out!" Ash said calling out his grass and fire type who along with Pikachu destroyed every target.

"Bulba!" Bulbasaur fired Razor Leaf to destroy them.

"Rar!" Persian throws Water Pulse out of his paws to decimate the targets.

"Hmm not bad Ash." Rudy said as they pulled up to an area with 6 targets.

"Alright Persian let's do this!" Ash said as his Icium Z glowed.

"Ooh, he's gonna use a Lorelei's Z-Move!" Misty said snapping out of Rudy's affections to see this.

Ash remembers Lorelei's movements. 'Like snow falling from the sky, or an a freezing winter night..' He raises his hands like a of ice.

"Subzero Slammer!" Ash said as Persian shot atop a giant ice pillar and fires a powerful beam destroying all the remaining targets freezing the fragments in a giant block of ice.

"Amazing.." Tracey gasped.

"Too cool." Mahri gasped. No pun intended.

"Incredible." Misty clapped her hands smiling at this.

"Well... looks I might have an interesting opponent." Rudy said as they pulled up to the docks. "Alright Ash you passed. So for our battle you can choose any three types of Pokémon and I will use the same."

"Any type of my choosing?" Ash asked thinking about it. "I choose Electric, Fighting and Fire Types." He said making up his mind.

"Alright Ash, I'll see you first thing tomorrow. So Misty would you care to join me and Mahri for dinner?" Rudy asks.

"Oh please say you will, my brother is a really great cook." Mari says.

"Uh I guess one meal couldn't hurt." Misty said.

"Great, we'll take you to the gym." Rudy said as they left the others and out the building, leaving the boys.

"Is it just me or is that guy head over heels for Misty?" Tracey asked.

"He is, he's pulling out all the stops." Ash said.

"I don't know what to say about him, you think Misty feels the same way?" Tracey said.

"How should I know?" Ash shrugged.

That night at the Pokémon Center, Ash and Tracey were talking to Prof. Oak when Ash showed him all his Z-Crystals.

"Very impressive collection Ash." Prof. Oak said.

"I'm really on a roll with these Professor Oak, and I'm learning more and more about Z-Moves and how they work." Ash said.

"Like what?" Prof. Oak asks.

"You don't even need to be the same type as the crystal. You just need to know an attack that's the same type as the crystal." Ash said.

"He's right, take Pikachu and Persian. All Pikachu needed to learn was Brick Break to do All-Out Pummeling and Persian with Icy Wind did Subzero Slammer." Tracey said.

"Incredible." Prof. Oak smiles writing this down.

"I knew going around the Orange Islands wasn't going to be a bad idea, and tomorrow I might get my 5th one." Ash said.

"Well I wish you luck Ash, watch out and stay on your toes." Prof. Oak warns.

"Oh believe me I will." Ash nodded.

Meanwhile at the Tovita Island Gym..

Misty was with Rudy and Mahri as he showed her all his Pokémon.

"So are you enjoying the tour so far?" Rudy asked her.

"It's very impressive." Misty said.

"And that's not all." Rudy opens a door and they see a room that has alot of Pokémon equipment and items to use.

"My brother makes sure he is prepared for anything that can happen." Mahri said.

"I'll say, it looks like you have everything." Misty said.

"Not everything, but it doesn't hurt to know what kind of situation." Rudy said as they walked inside and leads them to a briefcase. "This one has to be my favorite."

"Mine too, just wait till you see what's inside." Mahri tells Misty.

Opening it, Misty gasped as she sees not only Rudy's Z-Ring but 10 different colored Z-crystals.

"Wow, that's twice as many Z-Crystals than Ash." Misty gasps.

"Last year we all took a vacation to the Alola Region and as we explored, we happened to come across all of these little beauties." Rudy said.

"No one knows Z-Moves better than my Rudy in the entire Orange League." Mahri said.

Misty was surprised once again. "These two happens to be my favorite ones to use." Rudy pulled out a Waterium Z and a red crystal. "Waterium Z and Firium Z."

"Waterium Z." Misty said always wanting to use that since Cissy gave Ash one.

Rudy turned to her. "You seem to have an eye for this?" He asked.

"A little. I've always wanted to try doing a Z-Move and Water Pokemon is my thing." Misty admits.

"Really?" Rudy grew a smile on his face. "Well what would you say if I teach you?"

"Are you serious?" Misty asks.

"Why not, for someone who have a love for Water Pokémon, I can't say no to that." Rudy said.

"And maybe after the battle you can stay with us." Mahri suggests.

"Stay with you?" Misty said surprised.

"I love eveyone here, but I'm the only girl on the island." Mahri said. "I never had a sister before."

"I think Mahri would really enjoy having you around Misty, we all would." Rudy said.

"I don't know." Misty said not wanting to abandon Ash and Tracey.

"Please think about it, and give me your answer after the match tomorrow." Rudy said.

A conflicted look appeared on Misty's face. On one hand, was her good friends who she had so much fun with traveling and seeing the world together and the other hand was an incredible opportunity Rudy was offering.

'What do I do?' She thought.

The next day, Ash and Rudy were facing off on an arena atop the mountain with everyone watching from a hot air balloon.

"The first match-up battle will be.." One of Rudy's assistants spun a wheel and that had the type elements on it. It stopped onto Electric. "An Electric Battle. Both trainers release one electric Pokémon!"

"Pikachu, you're up!" Ash said as Pikachu runs on the field.

"Go, Electabuzz!" Rudy throws out the Electric Type.

"And the first battle is between Pikachu vs Electabuzz! Let the battle begin!" The ref announces.

"Pikachu Brick Break!" Ash said as Pikachu's fist glowed.

"Electabuzz block it!" Rudy said as Electabuzz blocked the punch.

"Try again!" Ash said his fist glowed again.

"Swing and a miss Electabuzz!" Rudy said as Electabuzz spun around and smacks Pikachu with its tail, knocking him back.

"Pika." Pikachu groans standing up.

"Now Electabuzz use Thunder Punch!" Rudy said. Electabuzz's fist was coated with electricity as it charged.

"Dodge it Pikachu, use Quick Attack!" Ash said. Pikachu quickly zoomed out of the way before Electabuzz could come within contact.

"Now Iron tail!" Leaping up Pikachu smacks Electabuzz in the face with Iron Tail.

"Electabuzz, take it!" Rudy said as Electabuzz shows no sign of being damaged by Iron Tail.

"What the?!" Ash gasps.

"My Electabuzz is trained to not let such little attacks take him down, so you gotta do better than that!" Rudy grinned. "Now show Pikachu your Iron Tail!"

"Ele!" Electabuzz clashes his metallic tail onto Pikachu.

"Pikachu Slam!" Wrapping his tail around Electabuzz's Pikachu slams Electabuzz into the ground surprising everyone.

"Wait what?" Rudy said breaking out of his cool persona.

"You mean stuff like that?" Ash smirks.

"Sorry Rudy but it's gonna take more than that to trip Ash up." Tracey smiles.

"Well then try this, Electabuzz, Thunderbolt!" Rudy said.

"Pikachu dodge it!" Ash said as Pikachu ran out of the way. "Use Agility!" Ash said as Pikachu started increasing his speed.

"You're not getting away! Electabuzz Shock Wave!" Releasing waves of electricity Electabuzz zaps Pikachu.

"Hang tough Pikachu!" Ash said as the mouse growled trying to take it all in.

"Now Thunderpunch again!" Rudy said.

Charging in Electabuzz punched Pikachu square in the chest. "Cha!" He wheezed in pain. "Now Quick Attack!" Charging in Electabuzz rams into Pikachu.

Pikachu flopped onto the ground and in front of Ash. "Pikachu!"

"Pika." Pikachu groaned in pain.

"Uh oh, things are not looking good for the challenger." The announcer said.

"That Electabuzz is a tough one to beat." Tracey said.

"Come on Rudy! Beat him!" Mahri cheers.

"Pikachu are you okay?" Ash asks as Pikachu stood up.

"Pika." He said shaking his head.

"If fighting head isn't gonna work, we might as well try finding a new angle." Ash tells him.

"Electabuzz Thunderbolt!" Rudy said.

"Pikachu Thunder!" Firing an even stronger electric attack it blasts away Thunderbolt and zaps Electabuzz.

"Wrong move Ash, Take that Electabuzz!" Rudy said as Thunder was amplifying Electabuzz.

"Or maybe I just needed a way to keep you busy." Ash smirks.

"What are you talking about?" Rudy asked.

"Let's go Pikachu!" Ash said putting in the Fightium Z and did a series of Air punches which Pikachu mimicked. "All-Out Pummeling!"

Thanks to Brick Break and Reversal, Pikachu gained Z Power and cries out as he releases multiple glowing hands as they made their way towards Electabuzz.

"Electabuzz, Thunderbolt and stop it quick!" Rudy shouted.

"Electa!" Electabuzz fires blasts of electricity which blasts most of the hands away before the rest stop him allowing Pikachu to surround himself with orange energy and slam dead center into Electabuzz knocking the wind out of him.

"Ele." Electabuzz falls to the ground with swirls in his eyes.

"Electabuzz!" Rudy gasped.

"Electabuzz is unable to battle, Pikachu is the winner!"

"And the first round goes to the challenger!" The announcer said.

"No way, my brother lost?" Mahri said in shock.

"I see what you did there, you knew I would use Electabuzz to absorb your electric attack and while Electabuzz was busy you used your Z-Move when I was wide open." Rudy realized.

"And you totally fell for it." Ash smirks as Pikachu ran back to him.

"Pika." The mouse smiles as Ash pets him.

"Come on Ash! If you win the next one you win the whole thing!" Tracey calls out.

"I wouldn't be so sure. Ash you may have won but you made a huge mistake." Rudy said.

"How so?" Ash asks.

"In an official Pokemon Battle you can only use one Z-Move throughout the entire match and you just wasted yours in round 1!" Rudy declared.

Ash and Pikachu's eyes widened in shock. "W-what?!" He gasped.

"And guess what? I still have mine waiting to be used." Rudy smirks holding up his Z-Ring.

"Oh crap, what have I done." Ash held his head.

"And for the second the type being used is Fire." The announcer said.

"I choose you Rapidash!" Ash said calling out his fire type.

"Go Ninetales!" Rudy said calling out his.

"Ha! Fire is Rudy's best! No way Ash can win." Mahri smiles.

Misty was however staying silent and wasn't saying anything.

"Battle Begin!"

"Music please." Rudy snapped his fingers.

Tracey and Misty look to see a stereo getting pulled out and dance music turned on.

And Rudy's Ninetales started dancing gracefully to the best. "Ninetales! Nine!" She leaped to one end of the battlefield to another.

"What the heck?" Ash said never seeing something like this before.

"It's dancing?" Tracey asked.

"Get ready for some style. Ninetales Flamethrower!" Rudy said firing Flamethrower.

"Rapidash, dodge it then use Megahorn!" Ash said as Rapidash trotted past the flames her her horn extended.

"Ninetales dodge!" Spinning out of the way Ninetales uses its dance moves to avoid the attack.

"What? Try it again!" Ash said as Rapidash tried to stab the horn into Ninetales.

"Add to it with Agility!" Rudy said as Ninetales ducked under all of Rapidash's advances.

"Switch to Double Kick!" As Ninetales jumps back Rapidash pulls back her hooves and kicks Ninetales twice.

"Ninetales, bring that horse down Dark Pulse!" Rudy said.

Recovering from the attack Ninetales blasts Rapidash with Dark Pulse making her fall back.

"Now Tail Slap!" Rudy said. Ninetales's entire tail glows white and it hits the Rapidash multiple times with it. Rapidash then bites onto it, shocking Ninetales.

"Nine?!" She was then suddnely swished around by the horse.

"Send that Ninetales flying!" Ash said as Rapidash lets go and Ninetales crashes in front of Rudy.

"Ninetales! But wait, Rapidash can't learn Bite!" He said.

"Maybe not the attack but my Rapidash still has teeth, doesn't she? That was just a normal bite." Ash smirks gesturing to his teeth.

The clone Rapdiash then whined with a laugh.

"Why you." Rudy growls.

"What's a matter Rudy? Can't dance your way out of this one?" Ash asks.

That comment actually made Misty laugh a little. "Misty?" Mahri turned to her.

"Leave it to Ash to find a way to get into Rudy's head." Misty said.

"He's finally getting the upper hand." Tracey smiles.

"Well Ash, I only save this for emergencies, but for you I'm making an exception." Rudy said readying his Z-Ring.

Almost immediately Mahri and all of Rudy's trainers put on sunglasses.

"You guys might wanna shield your eyes." One tells Misty and Tracey.

On Rudy's Z-Ring was Firium Z as he raised his arms like a flaming motion to build up Z-Power and gives that energy to Ninetales who stood up glowing with energy. "Hope you can live up to your name Ash cuz you're about to get burned! Ninetales, Inferno Overdrive!" Ninetales blew out large ball of over her head as she raises it above iher head as it grows bigger. "NINE!" Once it was done, Ninetales then throws the fireball at the Rapidash.

"Rapidash Fire Blast!" Ash said as Rapidash releases the flaming font face="Nimbus Mono L, monospace"span lang="zh-CN"火 /span/fontsymbol which flew past the fireball and smashes into Ninetales just as Inferno Overdrive hit Rapidash creating a giant flame explosion.

"Ninetales!" Rudy gasped.

"Rapidash!" Ash exclaimed everyone covered their eyes from the fiery impact.

When the flames died down everyone looked to see both fire types were on the ground groaning with swirly eyes.

"Both Rapidash and Ninetales are unable to battle! This round is a draw!"

"Huge fire power." Tracey said blown away.

"No wonder he likes that one so much." Misty said rubbing her eyes.

She made sure to hide Togepi away from that move.

"And now our final round if Fighting type." The announcer said.

"I choose you, Hitmonlee!" Ash said calling out the Kicking Pokemon.

"Go Hitmonchan!" Rudy said calling out the Punching Pokemon and opposite to Hitmonlee.

"This is it, the end of the match." Tracey said.

"End of..the match." Misty said silently as the time was almost near.

"We both used up our Z-Moves that means this last round comes down to which side wants this more." Rudy said.

"And we want it more Rudy." Ash said. "Right Hitmonlee?!"

"Hitmonlee!" The kicking demon shouted.

"Hitmonchan Mach Punch!" Rudy said as Hitmonchan charges in at an incredibly fast speed.

"Hitmonlee Mega Kick!" Ash said as Hitmonlee charges reeling in his foot.

And just like that the classic debate of which was better, punches or kicks was happening right in front of them.

Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan were swapping blow after blow.

Hitmonlee swings a kick but Hitmonchan blocks the kick and punches Hitmonlee back.

"I think its I show you how a real fighter makes a move." Rudy snapped his fingers again and music played.

(Final Countdown plays)

"Ooh I like this song." Ash said.

"It works on so many levels." Rudy smiles.

Hearing the music play, it pumped both fighting types up.

"Hitmonchan use Thunderpunch!" Rudy said as electricity surrounded his fist.

"Dodge and use Jump Kick!" Ducking under Hitmonlee jumps up and kicks Hitmonchan right in the chin.

Knocking him backwards. "Hitmonchan, Power-Up Punch Spin!" Rudy said. Hitmonchan start spinning like a top while his arms were out and his fists glowing brightly as they punched Hitmonlee one by one.

"Hitmonlee Low Sweep!" Ducking under the punch Hitmonlee sweeps his legs and knocks Hitmonchan to the ground.

"Now Blaze Kick!" Ash said. Hitmonlee's foot was englufed in flames as he knocks Hitmonchan backwards.

"Hitmonchan Vacuum Wave!" Hitmonchan grabs Hitmonlee's leg and spins him around before throwing him across the arena.

"Hitmonlee!" Ash gasped as he was heading towards the end cliffs! He runs towards towards and makes a break for it by jumping. And Ash manages to catch Hitmonlee before they plummet.

"Ash!" Tracey and Misty gasp in horror as Ash mustered up every ounce of strength he had and pulled Hitmonlee up.

"Monlee." Hitmonlee said thanking Ash for saving him.

"I'm just glad you're alright Hitmonlee." Ash smiles.

"That was way too close." Misty sighed in relief.

"Ash we're sorry, we didn't mean to go that far!" Rudy called out.

"Hitmon." Hitmonchan bowed ashamed.

"Let's just make sure we don't send anyone else over the edge, shall we?" Ash asks as they walk back to the center.

"What was Rudy thinking?" Misty said. "Using an attack like that on a dangerous platform."

Mahri looks to Misty who was calling her brother out on this and felt the thought of her staying slipping away.

"Now then with no more further delays, let the battle continue!"

"Hitmonchan use Agility and Fire Punch!" Using Agility to increase his speed Hitmonchan punches Hitmonlee in the gut.

"Hitmonlee, Endure!" Ash said Hitmonlee catches the burning fist and throws it back into Hitmonchan's face.

"Now Mega Kick!" Delivering a powerful kick Hitmonchan is sent flying back.

"Alright Ash, try this! Hitmonchan Focus Punch!" Rudy said as Hitmonchan's fists glowed bright.

(Johto Victory Battle Plays)

'There's gotta be a way to keep Hitmonchan way...wait a minute. There is!' Ash realized. "Hitmonlee Blaze Kick!"

"Himton.." Hitmonlee's foot was about to be englufed in flames.

"But!" Ash stopped him. "Spin on your back and do it!" Hitmonlee looked confused, but obliged as he did like a spinning and spreading his legs out like he was doing a windmill break dance as his feet was now coated with flames doing it.

"What is that?" Mahri gasps as it knocks into Hitmonchan.

"Hey, I remember that." Misty gasped remembering Wartortle did that same movement during the Indigo League Competition. "I can't believe he brought that back." She smiles.

Hitmonchan tried to avoid it but the flames kept pelting him back to back preventing his escape.

"Hitmonchan, hang in there!" Rudy shouted seeing this was just unbelievable to him.

"Keep it up Hitmonlee!" Ash said as Hitmonlee got one good lick onto Hitmonchan.

"Chan!" He cries out as he was burned from that spin.

"Now High Jump Kick!" Leaping high into the air everyone looks up in shock and awe.

"Hitmonchan look out!" Rudy said but as Hitmonchan looks up Hitmonlee was directly underneath the sun blinding him.

"MONLEE!" Hitmonlee said kicking Hitmonchan causing him to fall to the ground with swirly eyes.

"Hitmonchan is unable to battle! Hitmonlee wins!"

"And with 2 wins, the winner of the battle is Ash of Pallet Town!"

"He did it!" Tracey and Misty cheered.

"Hintmonlee, thank you." Ash pats his back. "That was one awesome match."

"Hitmonlee!" Hitmonlee's eyes lifted smiling. Rudy was speechless before returning Hitmonchan with a smile.

"Guess that's that." He said.

At the docks, Rudy handed Ash a yellow shell with spikes around it. "Ash, you really surprised me today. This Spike Shell badge is yours."

"Thanks Rudy and thanks for that Z-Move knowledge." Ash said taking the badge.

"And once again, I apologize for almost sending your Hitmonlee over the edge." Rudy said. "I hope you can forgive me."

"Well I knew you wouldn't fight like that, and it was an accident. So it's alright." Ash said telling him to worry about it.

"Thank you and speaking of Z-Moves." Rudy snapped his fingers again and one of his assistants had the briefcase of Z crystals open for him. "Since you have defeated me, you are allowed to take one of your choosing."

"You had this many?" Ash gasps.

"It's overwhelming. I know." Misty said.

"Honestly...I kinda want this one." Ash said grabbing Firium Z.

"An excellent choice Ash." Rudy said.

"You gonna be fine without this one?" Ash asks.

"Oh yeah because now I have a new favorite." Rudy said holding up Waterium Z.

"Rudy.." Misty said.

"Misty are you sure I can't convince you to stay?" Rudy asks.

"I really appreciate it Rudy but...I can't leave my friends. We're a team and I wouldn't trade traveling with them for anything." Misty smiles.

The boy then had a sad smile. "I understand. Then please take this." He looked to Mahri and she was holding a small box in her hands. She opened it up and inside was a pendant with water inside of it.

"Woah what is this?" Misty asked shocked.

"It's a Mystic Water Pendant, it can boost the powers of water Pokémon." Rudy explains.

"It was mine, but I want you to have it Misty." Mahri said with a smile. "So you won't forget us."

"Thank you Mahri. I'll keep it with me always." Misty smiles giving her a hug goodbye.

Walking to the Ferry, Ash and Tracey look to Misty who smiles.

"Thanks for sticking with us." Ash said.

"Like I'd ever leave some good friends of mine." She smiles as she puts on the Mystic Water Pendant around her neck. "How does it look?"

"Perfect." Tracey nodded.

"Like a real Water Pokémon Master." Ash nodded.

"Pika."

"Toge."

"Thanks guys." Misty said.

With Ash's third Orange League Gym Badge and Misty's new crush our heroes continue on through the Orange Islands and to their next adventure.
