When Hinata awoke, it was to the light shining directly into her eyes. She buried her face into her firm pillow but froze when she realized her pillow was moving up and down. She tiredly lifted her head and recognized that she was on top of Sasuke's bed and was lying on his chest. Luckily Sasuke was beneath the covers and she was on top of them, so there wasn't anything that happened besides cuddling. Her face heated as she retreated from his bedroom and peaked inside Kaito's room.
She smiled and saw her son was just as passed out as Sasuke was. She went into her room and changed into her clothing for the day and decided to start making both of them breakfast. She never asked Sasuke what time his brother would be arriving but she figured it didn't matter. Her house was clean and that's all she really cared about when company came over.
While Hinata was in the kitchen getting breakfast ready, she heard a quiet knocking on the door. She walked over and opened the door to see her former brother in law. Him and Sasuke looked so much alike except Itachi had longer hair he kept in a low pony tail and he always seemed to have bags around his eyes. Working in a law office would seem to have that effect on people. Itachi quietly set his duffel bag down on the ground and wrapped Hinata in a long hug. She relished the exchange especially considering she wasn't sure what he thought of her after the divorce.
"I missed you and Kaito." Itachi said into her hair and she nodded into his shoulder.
"We missed you too. I'm excited you can spend the weekend with us though." Hinata pulled back and looked at the slight smile on his face. He was probably just as emotionally reserved as Sasuke but he had a gentler look than his younger sibling.
"Where is he?" Itachi looked around the house in question but Hinata smiled in response.
"He's still asleep. I can wake him for you, if you want?" She asked hesitantly and luckily, he shook his head.
"Let him sleep. We can catch up until he wakes up." Hinata nodded at that and Itachi went to sit on the bar stool and Hinata resumed making breakfast.
"So how is it living together again after all these years?" Itachi asked with a curious look.
"It's actually going really well. I feel like he's a lot more mature than the last time we lived together. He's actually doing chores and helping me out this time. Plus, I would rather us all live under the same roof than split up the time with Kaito." He nodded at that and smiled.
"I'm surprised you haven't murdered him yet." Itachi smirked and Hinata laughed at that.
"Do you want some coffee or tea?" She asked, remembering her manners.
"Coffee would be great, thank you. So how is school going?" He watched her make his coffee and she hummed thoughtfully.
"It's going really well. The semester is almost over and I haven't decided if I want to teach summer classes yet. I don't think I want to because I love spending time with Kaito but I haven't figured it out yet."
"That makes sense. It would be nice to have summers off."
"How is your work going?" She asked after sipping on her own coffee.
"It is going well. I'm finishing tying up ends to a lawsuit I've been working on for a while so I can't wait to be done with this case. The client is a pain in the ass." Hinata giggled in response and they both turned their heads to see Sasuke turn the corner. It took Sasuke a few moments but once he recognized his brother sitting in the kitchen he grinned and gave him a big hug.
"How's it going?" Sasuke asked him, still trying to wake up. Hinata listened as Sasuke and Itachi caught up and she started finishing up their breakfast. Sasuke caught on and immediately started setting the table for everyone to eat. Itachi watched them curiously.
"I don't think I've ever seen you set the table Sasuke. Not even when we were little." Sasuke glared his eyes at his older brother who just smirked behind the coffee. Hinata knew what was happening but she was not willing to get between them.
"I told Hina I would help her with everything now that I'm living here. Is that such a problem?"
"No problem at all. It's just interesting." Sasuke sighed and resumed what he was doing. Hinata started plating everything for them.
"Shouldn't we wait for Kaito?" Itachi asked hesitantly.
"He wakes up as soon as he can start smelling breakfast." Sasuke smiled and soon enough they heard little footsteps echo into the hallway. The little head of black hair could be seen bopping along just barely over the granite countertops and they all giggled when Kaito's eyes bugged out of his head when seeing his uncle.
"Uncle!" Itachi laughed and bent down to scoop him up in his arms.
"There's my favorite person." Kaito started laughing when he started tickling him. After a few minutes, they all sat down and had breakfast together and the moment gave Hinata a fluttery feeling in her stomach. She loved seeing Kaito interact with their family and she knew it meant a lot to Itachi to see his nephew. Sasuke was Itachi's only sibling so Kaito was his only nephew. Itachi was nowhere near having a child of his own since he was so busy with work and didn't seem to want to settle down any time soon.
"So what are you two going to do when the both of us are out and about?" Itachi asked Sasuke which had her whipping her head up in confusion.
"I thought we were doing everything together? Didn't you want to spend time with your brother?"
"I see his ugly mug a lot more than I see my nephew so I figured I'd take him off your hands while you guys get some alone time. I hope that's not a problem." He shrugged and her son was grinning ear to ear at him.
"Oh no, you can do that. I can pack his bag for you. I just didn't know what the plan was. Is there a plan today?" She looked to Sasuke who just shrugged.
"I've been wanting to see a movie that just came out. I figured we could do that. Or if you wanted to do something else, we could." She was a bit flabbergasted at that as Sasuke usually never wanted to go out and do anything.
"Um okay, that works for me." Once she finished her meal, she got together Kaito's bag and then told Itachi when he usually takes a nap and gave him the spare key in case he needed to come back to the house and they were gone. Once Sasuke and her saw them off, she turned to him.
"You really want to see a movie?" She asked him skeptically.
"Why not? I was thinking about taking you out on a proper date. To make up for all the ones that I've ruined." Her face heated up at that.
"You haven't ruined any of them. They just weren't meant to be." Hinata shrugged.
"Hn. Well go get dressed. I have something special planned for tonight."
"What should I wear?" She asked hesitantly.
"Wear something nice but bring comfortable shoes with you for the last part of the night." She cocked her head at that.
"Are you going to tell me what we are doing?"
"Nope. Now go get ready, I have a few calls to make." She frowned at that and went into her room and picked out a little black dress she had yet to wear. She bought it before she gave birth to Kaito and it was very obvious how different it fit her now from when she first put it on. There was a cut in the front and since her breasts had gotten even larger, it seemed even more scandalous. It was tighter around the hips too. It made it feel like the dress was painted on but luckily it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. She guessed this could still be considered formal wear. She put on her back pumps and grabbed her leather jacket. Once her makeup was put on and her hair was tamed as much as possible, she went out to meet Sasuke. He was still on the phone and his eyes widened at the sight of her.
"I gotta go. Text me the details later." He hung up on the person and continued to stare at her. Her entire body seemed to be burning with her penetrating gaze. He wasn't even hiding the fact that his eyes were raking up and down her body.
"Um Sasuke?" She took him all in, he was wearing a black shirt and black slacks. Her mouth watered at the sight of the first few buttons undone on his shirt.
"I don't know if I can resist prison tonight Hina." She frowned at that.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm going to have to kick some ass tonight, I'm sure. You're going to attract everything on two legs and I'm going to have one hell of a night keeping them from you." She giggled in response.
"It'll be okay, I promise. Are we ready to go?" He nodded and grabbed her hand and led her to his car once the door was locked. She felt like she was going on a real date. He opened her car door for her and he couldn't keep from looking at her every few moments. The car purred to life and soon enough they were headed to their first destination.
"Have you written any new songs lately?" She asked quietly as she watched the people go about their lives in the city.
"I've written quite a few actually. I definitely have enough for an album but I don't know how many Naruto has done." Her eyebrows raised at that.
"Wow. That's a lot of work done in such a short time since you've been back."
"I feel the most creative when I'm at home and at peace." Her heart fluttered at that.
"Well that's good. I'm glad it's working out for you and I will definitely be sad when you leave again. It's been nice having some help with Kaito and around the house." He frowned at that which made her instantly regret it.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I know you can't always be around, forgive me." He reached over and grabbed her hand.
"I'm sorry I haven't been around as much as we both would like. I'm going to try and do better for both of us. Maybe if I had a different profession we would still be together." She frowned at that and swallowed her nerves. She figured now would be as good time as any to have THE talk that she had been dreading.
"Sasuke, it was never about your career." She said quietly and clung to his hand harder. He frowned and looked over at her in question which just urged her on.
"When we were married, I felt like I was always an afterthought for you. I understood how much you loved your job and I was always so proud of you and the work you did. But when you came home it was like you were still on the road. You were never really in the present moment with me whenever you would come home. It was just like you were existing. Even when we would talk about me, it was like your mind was off in space. I no longer felt like your wife, I just felt like some weird concubine that lived in our house." His thumb rubbed over the back of her knuckles and she tried to let it soothe her but her nerves were getting the best of her.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know. Why didn't you tell me you felt like that?" He asked gently and she shrugged.
"We were both young and inexperienced. I thought I was being too irrational and I thought I could just push through it and it would get better. But unfortunately, by the time I had reached my breaking point, it was too late for me. I had already made up my mind. Looking back now, I should have told you. We probably could have worked it out to where we would still be married. I regret making such a severe decision with no warning." He lifted her hand to his lips and frowned as he thought about it. They were almost to the theater but Hinata needed to finish what she needed to say. He looked like he was about to say something when she shook her head.
"I'm not exactly finished. You know how I've been seeing a counselor?" She asked hesitantly and he nodded at her. "The reason why I needed to see a counselor is because ever since you moved back in, I've been extremely confused with my feelings. Since you moved back in Sasuke, it's been so different than when we were married. You are so attentive to Kaito and I and you always seem to know what I need and when I need it. Whether it's quiet time to where I can finish grading or when I need tea and you just make me some without me ever opening my mouth. You're so invested in my career and my life and what I am doing. It almost feels like you are an entirely different person and I know I have changed as well. My counselor has been helping me sort out my feelings and my thoughts and I wanted to talk to you about it." He parked the car in the parking garage of the theater and turned to her with a pensive look on his face.
"What are you trying to say Hina?" He asked gently.
"If you want, I would like to try again. I want to get back together. I feel like so much has changed between us and it's only been for the better." She started tearing up as she stared into his dark eyes. "I love you Sasuke and I don't think I ever stopped. It's just been recent events that have made me realize I never stopped loving you." His hands cradled her face and his thumbs softly wiped away her trail of tears. She closed her eyes as she heard the quiet hum of the radio.
"Hina look at me." She opened her eyes again and his face was unreadable. "Are you sure you want this?" She nodded in response and his thumbs just kept rubbing against her cheekbones. She had never felt more vulnerable.
"If we are going to do this, I want complete honesty from you. No more hiding how you feel and no more running." Her eyes widened in response. Does that mean-?
"I have always loved you Hina. You've always been the one for me. Of course, I would love to get back together but you have to promise me to tell me everything. When you asked for a divorce, I had never spiraled so much in my life. I felt like I was blindsided by the entire thing. I had never been more hurt in my life and I don't want that to ever happen again. We're a team and we make decisions together, okay?"
"Okay." She said, smiling through her tears and he quickly covered her lips with his own. This had always felt so right. His tongue delved into her mouth and her heartrate increased but it seemed Sasuke had no plans to go further, which made her grateful. He just continued to hold her gently as if she was a piece of precious porcelain. After a few moments, they separated. But he continued to hold her and she was slightly gripping his forearms for support.
"Um, there was something else I wanted to talk to you about." He cocked his head in curiosity. At that moment, he looked awfully similar to a dog.
"I kind of um, wanted to take it slow. I love being with you in every way but I wanted time to work our way up to that. I don't just want to jump into bed with you right away." He took the news pretty well as he nodded in agreement. "Also, I don't want to let Kaito know we got back together. Just on the off chance it doesn't work, I don't want his heart broken. I just want to remain the way we are until we know for sure this is what we both want."
"That sounds fair. Although both of those things are going to be hard. I can't keep my hands off of you and Kaito is so intelligent. He will probably pick up on the subtle differences even if we try and keep things the same." He rubbed her jaw line and she leaned into the touch.
"I know. We just have to do the best we can." He kissed her gently again and then shut off the car. She watched him get out and he opened the car door for her.
"Ready to go see this movie?" She laughed and nodded and took his hand. She felt like fifty pounds had been lifted from her shoulder and she couldn't have been happier. It was such a relief to know that Sasuke wanted the same thing she did and was willing to work with her on it. She couldn't have asked for a better partner.
A/N: Ahhh thank you all so much for the reviews. It's good to be back. And finally, they talked things out like they should have from the very beginning. Better late than never! Next chapter is all about the special date that has been planned.
