AUTHOR'S NOTE:
So, I should have probably should have posted this separate, but I think it's a nice cap to Kid's story. It began with his birth, it should end with the birth of his child. I think that is enough of a reason to put it here, though I'm sorry if you don't think so. I might write more for this story, but I think I'm done, and if I'm done, I think I'd like to end it like this. Anyway… Read and Review, Duckies. I hope this is okay, even if it's off theme.
Black Star made his way down the hallways of the DWMA, on the way to see Kid. A lot had changed about it since he and Kid had attended it, though. Through the centuries it had been remodeled a lot, though some things wouldn't change, like the symmetry of the building. Kid had always kept the symmetry when every time he had to expand the school. He kept the esthetics that his father had developed too, at least on the outside of the building. It had been so long since it looked like it did when he went there, maybe 6,000 years? It get more difficult to remember specifics, but Kid was a lot better at that. Kid said it was because his human body struggled body struggled with having the life span and memory of a god now, but Black Star thought Kid was just being a dick. It had been about 20,000 years since he and Kid were… well, kids, but Kid still remembered a lot about then, a lot more then he could, at least. Which wouldn't be so bad if Kid weren't so smug about it. Black Star would complain, but he knew he needed Kid's smugness to keep him in check. What Black Star remembers about his attitude as child makes him cringe. The ego he had was nuts, and of course he'd have an ego, he was fucking awesome, but he was glad that he had Kid and Tsubaki (and to a lesser extent Maki) to keep him in line until he gathered enough sense to realize how ridiculous he was. That wasn't to say he really changed that much, but he had definitely calmed down. It had helped that he surrounded himself by people just as super awesome as him.
He had watched Maki become one of the best Meisters they had besides himself. He watched Soul become a bad ass Death Scythe (watching Kid use him during emergency situations was literally the coolest thing he had ever seen). And though Tsubaki would never be a Death Scythe, she was the best weapon he had ever had. The strongest, most versatile weapon he ever had, and also just a great mother to their kids (It had surprised absolutely nobody when Black Star had announced their engagement. Kill joys.). He had always encouraged them to get stronger, because he couldn't be hanging out with people so far below his power level. And then there was Kid. Kid had resolved to get stronger the minute they got back from the moon, and because teenagers are terrible gossips, word of Kid saying Black Star was stronger than him got around quickly. Black Star teased him relentlessly, and Kid insisted that the only reason he got so far ahead was because he had been kidnapped and thus not allowed the practice properly. He had blown that excuse off, but it turned out to be sort of right, between becoming a full death god and training as hard as he could for once in his life, Kid caught up with Black Star within a few months. Turns out he might have inspired Kid a bit too much, and it wasn't long before Kid had even taught himself some Black Stars techniques. He should have expected it, the soul wavelength of Death Gods was huge, so of course they would be able to use wavelength control, but that doesn't mean he didn't lose mind when during a "playful" fight between the two Kid used Soul Menace. The fight had stopped when Black Star started correct his technique, and complain that if he knew wavelength control, Kid need to teach him something to make it fair. Kid agreed, he wanted the playing field as level as possible.
That started to long painful journey to the two starting to help each other, not because from a point of competition or because of their lofty shared goal to change the world, but because of genuine want to help each other get stronger. Honestly, it took a lot longer than it should have. Around three years, in fact. Both of them were hard heads who couldn't be told anything, and that made the process difficult, but they got there. The competition aspect never fully faded, but it did get pushed aside and eventually reduced to snide comments after what is now known as the crater incident.
Sometime in their twenties, Black Star had finally hit his power ceiling. Kid hadn't. This caused a lot of fighting between the two before they had a brutal all out brawl that eventually got taken to the air outside of Death City. It was a blood bath. Soul wavelengths clashed and were bent, death god magic was tossed here and there, punches, kicks, leaving them bloodied and bruised, at some point Black briefly got the upper hand, and he ripped off Kid's arms in the fit of rage, only to get more pissed when kid successfully used his legs to get him away while his arms grew right back (still the grossest thing Black Star has ever seen). The battle finally ended when Kid brought down his good ol' hammer kick, with a strong dose of soul wavelength and death god magic, sending Black Star into the ground, leaving a massive crater. Kid has severally injured, and so was Black Star. Their friends lost. Their. Minds. No more fighting they said. You'll kill each other, or someone else they said. So that put an effective ban on fights. Kid and Black Star honored it, even after they were all… gone.
Black Star would never forget when he stopped aging, a true sign that he had become a god, and Kid had explained what that would mean. Black Star had never understood why Kid tended to keep people at arm's length until the first time they had a friend die of old age. Then it actually hit him. If he was going to live forever (or until he died in battle a true hero god) he would have to go through this over and over. Kid had been a big help, and that had cemented Kid and Black Star as friends forever, literally.
Black Star had been so caught up going down memory lane, that he didn't realize he was standing in front of Kid's office door. Opps. He might have not physically aged past his mid-twenties, but he was such a spacey geezer sometimes. He opened the door without knocking because while he might be a bit more mature he was still Black Star and fuck politeness, but when he opened the door he got a weird feeling. Kid was bent over something behind his desk, murmuring in tone much softer then anything he had heard use in years. Sure, Kid eventually had to start putting on a bit of a goofy voice like his father did when he turned sixteen, his voice finally dropped and caused him sound like some sort of horrifying monster. He really was his father son, it turned out, because Black Star had seen Kid floor people with his real voice, just like Lord Death had done before him. He couldn't blame them, either, when Kid wanted to sound scary, he could do it to great effect. He was just glad the voice Kid puts on isn't as goofy as the one his dad did. Or maybe it was, and he was just remembering wrong. Regardless, this tone Kid was murmuring was something totally different. Kid finally seemed to notice he was there and turned around.
"Oh, hello, Black Star, I'm glad you could make it. You are late, though." Kid waved a white, blocky hand at him, his skull mask morphing into bemused disappointment. When Kid was roughly 2,000 years old he ditched his body for a cloak, like his father before him. His form was a bit thinner, taller and less pointy then his father's, but the resemblance was still uncanny.
"Hey, Kid, sorry, I just got a little distracted." Black Star said, walking a little closer, trying to get a closer look at whatever Kid had been leaning over.
"Finally going daffy in your old age, Black Star?" Kid's mask might not have a mouth, but he could tell he was smirking. Prick. "And how many times must I tell you, call me Lord Death, if the kids hear you calling me that, I'll lose their respect."
"Kid, last week you fell running down the stairs, despite the fact you don't have feet. Nobody respects you." That wasn't true, people respected him, but Kid was such a goofball at heart that people definitely laughed at him a lot. This was par for the course banter between the two gods.
"Nonsense, besides, I have something to show you that I think will finally get you to call me by name." Kid waved him over and Black Star started that way. It didn't take long before he saw it, the little bassinet. Black as night, with white lace and skulls decorating it, the mobile above decorated with skulls, bats, and scythes. That's also when he heard it, a tiny little coo. He walked faster.
He got over to the thing and looked inside, and there it was. A teeny tiny little baby, skin pale as snow and hair dark as night with some white stripes slightly apparent, squirming a little bit with his eyes closed. He. Was. Precious.
"Black Star, meet Death. Death the Kid. I figured I would keep the name in the family." Kid said, leaning over and giving his son a little tickle. "Hey, Kid, say hi to your Uncle Black Star." And then the eyes opened, big, adorable yellow eyes. It was like if a kitten had transformed into a human child.
"Hey, Junior." Black Star went and scooped the little boy up and cradling him. "Look at you. You are the cutest aren't you? Yeah." Black Star had developed some serious skills with child care, having several of his own, and having taken responsibility for Angela. Little Death just cooed and looked at him, sticking his tongue out. "Nice tongue, buddy, here's mine." Sticking his own out.
"Please don't do that. It will teach him bad habits." Black Star withdrew his tongue.
"Your dad is stick in the mud, don't listen to him, Junior." Black Star gave the baby a poke, prompting a happy noise. "He's so happy and well behaved, sure he's yours?"
"The act of splitting my soul was highly painful, and I'm still recovering, so yes I'm sure." The fact the he was calling his little Death Junior and not Kid hadn't escaped him. "Look, he has the Lines of Sanzu."
"I hope these lines don't drive you crazy like they did your dad." Black Star cooed before really thinking about what he just said. The lines drove Kid nuts because they messed with his symmetry, but when they were kids he connected them. When that happened, Lord Death… Black Star's eyes went wide in shock and his eyes snapped at Kid, who had caught onto his line of thought and taken off his mask so he could properly look him in the eyes. "Kid, you…"
"Yes, I will. Don't worry, it's unlikely that Kid will connect his lines before his twenties, the only reason I connected mine so early has a mix between using a magic tool to unlock them early, and the fact that it was required by necessity. We still have a couple decades before we will come to that, and I'd really like it if you help me prepare him for his destiny. He's the future, and it'd be great to have someone of your stature teach him combat and assassination technics." Even with how freaky Kid's skull shaped irises were, Black Star could still feel the sincerity by looking him in the eyes.
"Right." He was floored. He never thought he'd outlive Kid, he figured that he'd die in a battle with other hostile Warrior gods and crazy rogue witches before something ever happened to Kid. It was so… weird. He thought they might have forever if they were lucky, but to have that all pulled out from under him was shocking to say the least. Devastating, even, but he respected Kid's decision, he must have his reasons. "I'll handle training in karate, various grappling technics, wavelength control, and in the weapons I specialize in, you'll handle the rest?"
"Yes, that sound's good. Thank you for taking this so well." Kid smiled. It had been so long since he'd seen that smile. "I'm sorry I'll be leaving you, Black Star, but I felt that was the time for someone new to take over. I've been so out of touch, and we've accomplished as many of our goals as I think we can ourselves, we need…"
"Something new." He understood how. He respected it. "Don't worry, I'll take care of the kid when you bite it, even if he an adult, I'm sure he'll find his Uncle Black Star is tough to say no to. I'll make sure he' okay."
"Thank you, Black Star." Kid smiled. "I knew I could count on you."
"Of course, I'm the great and awesome Black Star, I'm capable of anything." He smirked, but it was half-hearted, the words mildly sarcastic, as they normally were now-a-days.
"You really are."
Kid hadn't been sure about what was going to happen, but now that Black Star had agreed to help him, he was sure that everything would be fine.
