Munkin' To The Extreme
About This Story: Alvin is healing in the aftermath of a skateboarding accident. He also has trouble dealing with growing up, and with realizing he has changing feelings for his friend, Brittany. Age-wise they are 12. Contains awkward adolescent angst & drama, as well as mentions of puberty-related stuff throughout. I don't own any part of the Chipmunk franchise, just borrowing them from Nickelodeon, Janice Karman, & Ross Bagdasarian, their family, & their company.
About This Chapter: Rated PG-13 (T), for some depictions of bodily injury, blood, vomiting, & some adolescent angst
Pairings: Alvin/Brittany, Simon/Jeanette, Simon/Brittany
1. Taking A Tumble
"It has been a mostly sunny Tuesday afternoon for us at the park. What a great start for the first week of summer!" Simon happily sighed while sitting on the park bench.
Jeanette returned the smile from the screen of the phone in Simon's lap. "It does look nice at the park..."
Brittany's face appeared onscreen out of nowhere next to Jeanette's. "Thanks for the weather report, Mister Rogers." She pretended to yawn. "I don't know how we'd ever be so bored without you."
"Hey, Brittany, how long have you been there?" Simon smiled awkwardly. "I thought Jeanette and I were having a private conversation, since this is her phone."
"About five minutes." Brittany shrugged. "But relax, Simon, all of your boring scientific secrets you've just shared with Jen are safe with me - in one ear and out the other. I didn't remember the ones I could even understand, so I'm not gonna share any of it with any secret scientific agencies or anything like that. It's just my background noise by now."
"Uh, Brittany..." Jeanette began, motioning towards her eyes. "I think some of your make-up smeared or smudged or something. You might wanna check it out." She winked at Simon as if to say, "Follow my lead."
"Yeah, Brittany." Simon nodded onscreen. "I can see something from here."
"What?" Brittany wondered out loud. "I'll be back, right after I check myself in the vanity mirror in our bedroom." With that, she left the living room area of the Chipettes' Treehouse and headed up the stairs.
"Sorry about that, Simon." Jeanette apologized as soon as Brittany was out of earshot. "She thinks we're worth watching for some juicy gossip, or something, I guess."
"You sure have learned your sister's weakness, and how to make her leave when you want!" He laughed.
"Even though it's not like we were sharing any personal information over the phone." Jeanette giggled. "I don't know why she thinks we'll do or say anything that she really wants to hear."
"Maybe she thinks we're an item." Simon chuckled. "Or she's jealous."
Jeanette shrugged. "My 'sister-sense' is telling me that she has a thing for Alvin, but doesn't want to do anything more about it than flirt. How do I say this...? She also doesn't want any sparks to fly for anyone else before she can set off fireworks of her own. Does that make any sense?"
"A little." Simon nodded. "The 'Alpha Female' wants to be the first in the pack to have a mate." He paused. Just why was he telling her this? Where was he going with it? Why was it suddenly weird to be having this kind of conversation with Jeanette?
Jeanette brought him back to reality. "...And the 'Alpha Female' seems a bit jealous if she sees any other female spending any significant amount of time with any other male, even as just a friendly phone conversation. She thinks her biological clock is ticking away, even though she's barely reached a certain level of maturity this past year that she thinks is 'adult'. How cute! She thinks she's an adult, when she's just barely an adolescent, just like the rest of us. Another challenge to her biological clock, at least in her opinion, is that the 'Alpha Male' she seeks is still immature. She might think it's 'robbing the cradle' or something to even be slightly interested in him."
"And she's always been a few minutes older than him, anyway." Simon shrugged. "Given that girls mature faster anyways, those few minutes are translating into quite an age-gap in 'chipmunk years'." He shook his head, "Oh, the politics of being twelve years old!"
Jeanette nodded sympathetically. "Careful, Simon, the 'Alpha Female' probably thinks she's a cougar on the prowl by now. And, well...you are the only guy in our group who is taller than her for now - and older."
"Wait..." Simon's eyes went wide. "Jeanette, I thought Alvin was the 'Alpha Male' in our family. I'm just the 'Alpha Male's' intellectual older brother. Are you saying that Brittany..."
Jeanette gave him a quick smile and nod, while raising her eyebrows. "You catch on quick. Alvin may have been the 'Alpha Male' in our conversation, but since you are...his intellectual and more mature brother...the 'Alpha Female' - which is still Brittany - kinda likes you too. I'm honestly not entirely sure if she likes you or Alvin more, it seems to change everyday, just like the emotional roller coaster she normally rides."
"I just don't understand, Jeanette." He shook his head. "You and Brittany are both the same age and level of maturity, but you keep a much more level head, while she is more emotionally volatile - the epitome of an adolescent female."
"Well, I guess you and I are more emotionally-removed and level-headed at the core." She shrugged. "I think Brittany - and even Alvin - have always been emotionally volatile drama queens. Buckle up! Things are about to get crazier. We're not even teenagers yet, and only fifty-percent of our chipmunk population has reached the awkward adolescent stage. I mean, I still think that's kinda weird that we're all the same age, but you, Brittany, and I appear significantly older than the others."
"Hey, Simon! Whatcha doing?" Theodore skated by on his skateboard, nearly startling his brother.
"Oh, hi, Theodore. I'm just talking to Jeanette." To the phone he said, "Theo just skated by." He turned the phone so that Jeanette and Theodore could see each other. "Wanna say hi?"
"Hi, Jeanette!" Theodore smiled and waved.
"Hey, Theo!" Jeanette returned the wave. "So, where's Alvin?"
Theodore chuckled. "He's off skating the half-pipe and doing other tricks in the skatepark area. I was videoing his tricks, but I got tired of holding the camera, so I set it up on the tripod. I wanted to skate around by myself a little, rather than just watch Alvin. After watching him do multiple takes of the same tricks, just to see which one he thinks looks the best, I got tired and even bored."
Jeanette laughed. "That sounds like Alvin - "
CCRRRAAAAASSHHH!
"AAHHH! OOOHHHH!..."
Simon, Theodore, and Jeanette all jumped at the sound that seemed to happen thirty yards away. Simon hopped off the bench to join Theodore in running as fast as they could over to the skatepark area.
"ALVIN, WHERE ARE YOU?" Simon yelled as he scanned the pavement.
"I saw him last over here, Simon." Theodore ran over to some stairs.
Sure enough, they found their brother on a landing between two flights of stairs, where the steel railing angled around a corner as the lower set of stairs turned down and to the left of the upper set. Alvin was curled up into a ball, clutching his knees to his chest, his tail even curled up between them. His skateboard was a few steps down the lower flight of stairs, the wheels facing upwards so that it was obvious one wheel was missing.
Theodore tried to rub Alvin's shoulder to comfort him, and find out what happened, but all Alvin did was start bawling, despite gritting his teeth and squeezing his eyes shut. "Alvin, are you OK?"
All Alvin could do was shake his head and continue to cry uncontrollably.
"Hello? What's going on? Is Alvin OK?" Jeanette's voice came from Simon's phone.
Simon realized he was still video-chatting with her. He looked at her in shock. "Uh, Jeanette...I'm not sure if we'll be on our way home soon, or going to the ER. But I gotta go!" He hung up before giving her a chance to respond.
He knelt next to Alvin, as Theodore stood up. "Alvin, what happened?"
Alvin was only heaving, gasping, and sobbing by this point. Simon pulled the fetal-positioned Alvin onto his lap so that his head rested near Simon's shoulder. "What hurts, Alvin? Your stomach?" He tried to pat him on the back and cradle him. Instead of answering, Alvin seemed to go quiet. Simon gasped, then tried to position Alvin's head to ensure that his airway was open. He could still hear faint breathing, but could tell that Alvin had passed out. He grabbed Alvin's hat by the bill and used it to fan some air to Alvin's face.
"Simon!" Theodore squeaked as he ran back up the stairs. "I got the video camera we set up earlier. Maybe we can play it back and find out what happened."
"First, we need to call Dave to pick us up and take us to the ER." Simon looked up at Theodore, who nodded in agreement. Simon pulled his phone out, swiping a few buttons.
"Hello, Simon! Are you fellas having fun at the park?" Dave's voice said as he answered.
Simon explained. "We were, Dave, but Alvin just had an accident at the skatepark. He just passed out in my arms, but he's still breathing, and we need you to come get us as soon as possible. We may need to go to the ER. Please hurry, Dave!"
"On my way, Simon, just keep him breathing!" Dave said as he hung up.
Simon glanced up at Theodore. "Dave is on his way. Maybe you should also go get his skateboard, or what's left of it."
"OK." Theodore nodded as he left the video camera next to Simon.
Simon patted Alvin's cheek. "It's gonna be OK, Alvin. Dave is on his way, and you're still breathing. Now to watch the video and see if I can find out what happened to you. How bad could it be?"
He picked up the camera, selected the most recent five minute video segment, and hit the play button to watch it. He could see Theodore setting it up and situating it so that the stairs were within view. Once Theodore disappeared from view, he saw a segment of video where Alvin was on his skateboard, grinding the railing of the stairs with such acrobatic skill. He did this about four times, doing a slightly different variation of the trick each time. Apparently Alvin was attempting another new trick as he carved the corner of the railing on the fifth time, but a wheel broke off, pitching him forward so that he hit the railing in a straddled position, before falling onto the landing where he was when they found him.
Simon gasped in horror.
"I even found the other wheel..." Theodore ran over to them smiling until he saw Simon's expression. "What happened?"
"I don't know if you really want to see this, Theo," Simon grimaced. "But unfortunately I don't think I can describe it any other way." He hit the playback button as Theodore knelt next to them.
When the video got to the point of Alvin's injury, Theodore was doubled over, his hands trying to shield his privates. "Ohh...you mean Alvin hurt his..." One of his hands returned to cover his mouth, as his cheeks inflated and his eyes got wide.
He turned around quickly, and Simon could hear him proceed to heave and vomit.
"Oh, Theo, not you too!" Simon looked over to see that Theodore was holding onto a vertical pole of the stair railing to support himself with one hand. His other hand was on his stomach as he tried to catch his breath.
"Boys? Where are you?" Dave shouted from about fifty feet away.
"DAVE!" Simultaneously answered Simon and Theodore.
His footsteps picked up to more of a running pace. "Simon, Theodore, are you guys OK? How's Alvin?"
Simon glanced down at Alvin's face, and quickly confirmed he was still breathing. "He's still passed out, but breathing." He glanced up as their father arrived.
Dave knelt down facing Simon, on Alvin's other side. "Oh, Alvin, what happened to you? Here, let me take him..."
As Simon transferred Alvin from his lap into Dave's awaiting arms, Alvin's vice-grip hold to his knees loosened. When his legs became less tucked-in, a dark spot became visible at the bottom and middle of his shirt. The movement was enough to make Alvin blink and groan.
"What the..." Dave examined that spot for a moment, lifting Alvin's shirt slightly. He gasped. "Alvin, you're bleeding..."
Simon could hear Theodore dry-heaving again as he tried to explain. "He was grinding the stair railing while on his skateboard when the wheel broke off and he fell straddling the railing. Theodore and I didn't see it happen, but we saw the video of it."
Dave gently rubbed Alvin's back. "Oh, Alvin, we need to take you to the emergency room." He picked up Alvin, allowing him to rest in the crook of his left arm. To his other two sons, he said, "Simon, you and Theodore put all of the stuff in the car, while I carry Alvin."
"Right." They nodded quickly in unison, sensing the urgency in Dave's voice. Simon carried Alvin's and Theodore's skateboards, while Theodore carried the video camera and tripod.
The four of them got into the family car, putting the stuff on the floor in the back, and letting Alvin lie down with his head in Theodore's lap and his feet in Simon's lap. Theodore continued to use Alvin's cap to fan his face.
As Dave drove away, he glanced at Simon in the rear-view mirror. "The nearest emergency clinic isn't far from here, so we can be there within five minutes. But considering Alvin's injury, I might need you guys to undress him for me once we get there."
"Really? Us?" Simon's eyes went wide. He hadn't considered that!
Dave shot him a worried look. "Alvin keeps passing out, and my hands are too big to be able to work the zipper and button of his jeans."
Theodore glanced worriedly at Simon. "And, Simon, you know how I kept getting sick watching the video. You may have to do all that."
Simon shuddered, rubbed the back of his neck, and looked over at Alvin. "Ohh... Eeesh..."
A/N: I'm just attempting to write a story catching the Chipmunks & Chipettes at the awkward adolescent stage. This chapter is mostly setting the stage for the rest of it. But don't worry, Alvin will still eventually be able to reproduce, not that he will want to anytime soon. The entire story will probably be awkward, as it brings back memories of the most awkward stage of life, for both males and females. And if you are still at that stage, or on the verge of it, may God have mercy on your soul.
