This story needs a special mood to write.. Part playful, part silly, and at least two shots of gin and lime. This must the be the first time I am writing this story without drinking. Hopefully, it won't be equivalently boring.
Here it goes..
Bee in the Bonnet. Ball in the basket. Bubbles in the batter… babbling baby brothers.. The tongue twisters went round and round in Sansa's head. She knew what's causing this. There is something she is on the cusp of grasping, but she could not, because it's lying right on that line between improbable and impossible, shrouded in shadows.
She looked out the window again. The bloody big and scary unicorns continued digging, as they have taken to doing since they are left in moat. The dodo's clacked on the walls, grey sky behind them brought their bright orange beak in to more focus, making it look like floating flame.
What is it she is missing?
"Aye. Ti's true. I know Woyt, haven't got two copper's of wits in him to lie like this. All we need is a baby'un. I bet lady Sansa will give us funds to get big'uns. Then we will be rich. Like'em knights. Come now, Jor. You are the best tracker we have." a guard was saying to another.
Sansa leaned in. what is this? A scheme to con her? Or are they genuinely trying to get her something new? By now, her quests have become famous among northern lords, now a days, bounty hunters, lordlings and even an occasional sailor dropped in on her to ask for a quest.
"What if it is a fluke? The mammoths are known to have all died out." the man guard is trying to convince groused.
Mammoths? They are trying to get her a Mammoth?
Sansa stopped in her tracks as the whirlwind of metaphors died in her brain. She finally grasped that ephemeral truth that sat right on the line between impossible and improbable.
Bio-resonance.
It's a term coined by Bran the brother, who has a doctorate at twentyone in the mysterious subject of paranormal history. In his words, it's not that ninety percent of human brain is not used for anything, it's more like ninety percent of flora or fauna that communicates with that part of human brain is extinct.
Given Mammoths died out during first ice age, it will stand to reason all that flora and fauna is available now. That explains why the weirwood is so amenable to Bran the baby's whims. It's one of the extinct fauna that can communicate with humans. Then it crashed on her.
Gods! The ice age.
She is here right before the ice age starts. This explained so many things. Why dodo's are alive and thriving, why unicorns are a real animal instead of long lost myth, hells, even dragons are not yet lore.
She is in that mysterious bubble of hundred years even two hundred years of best technology could not penetrate. No wonder all these extinct species are alive. Sansa tried remembering those fleeting theories she heard in documentaries Bran the brother forced the entire family to watch. It's been too long! She could barely remember a word they talked about, except a great deal of people and animals going hungry.
Sodding time travel... She grumbled to herself.
She left the guards arguing about the impossibility of logistics to themselves, made a beeline for maester Luwin.
"Lady Sansa." the maester greeted her genially, even as he rummaged scrolls.
"Is there something specific you are searching for, maester?" she asked.
"The harvest chart you made, my lady." he answered back sheepishly.
Sansa pointed to a shelf on right.
"Ah." The maester grinned as he pulled out the chart she made.
"Is there anything you are looking for, my lady?" the maester asked respectfully.
He is in a fine form now a days, what with proving, disproving and making use of knowledge Sansa provided.
"Can you tell me of the geological events of history? The ones of calamitous nature?" she asked.
"You came all the way to ask that, my lady?" Maester luwin asked surprisingly.
"Yes. it is urgent." Sansa answered.
"Well, the most recent event is doom of valyria. Before that, the ash rain of grey waste. It's predated by the day shadow fell on asshai. The breaking of arm of dorne is thousand years before that. Breaking of neck by children, five hundred years fore. The migration of first men predates that by five thousand years." Maester luwin answered.
"Are there any books on all these events, maester?" Sansa asked.
The maester fetched all the books needed, then settled himself in to Sansa's side to hear what she has to say. Now that she started on the books, she is starting to remember some of those little facts that she didn't even think about in long time. Specifically, the anomalous drop in temperature world wide, which significantly harmed a global warming drive that was going well till then. Her Senator brother Robb griped about it endlessly.
The volcanic eruptions have a habit of cooling atmosphere. The valyrian doom is by far the biggest volcanic activity she ever heard of. From the way maester Luwin described the place, she could only conclude that it is not a single volcano, but all fourteen of them erupted at the same time. Since the eruption is still going on in some form for thousand years, Sansa could only guess at how much more worse this winter could get.
She needs plans. Plans on top of plans. This kind of winter could be disastrous in modern era, much less the medieval one she is living in. No wonder they all died. How ever, this time, they will not, for they have Sansa.
Till now, she assumed it is some kind of magic that brought her here, and thus she had to die at the same time this sansa did, keeping the history intact, fulfilling magic time loop. Call her stupid for believing in magical time travel in the era of science, but she liked the romance of such notion. After all, Some part of her must have come from Stupid princess Sansa. How ever, after looking at the weirwood trees, and knowing that an unprecedented astrological event happened in her own time, she is beginning to think that it was more of a conscious ness swap rather than time travel.
If that were the case, the weirwood trees are capable of far more than she initially assumed. her family and genes are amazing to have survived from this period to modern century, even more for maintaining their position as overlords at the same time. She could only assume Sansa of this time and herself are at ideal locations for such conscious transfer to have occurred through the trees. Evidently, Stark's ability to communicate through these trees is above and beyond any of their contemporaries.
Sansa left that thought there, and started taking stock of her situation. After all, she has ice age to prepare for. The only good thing she has right now is that she sent out Jon and Robb on their quests. Otherwise, they wouldn't even have boiling lake, which could produce at least some food during winter.
She needs to start campaign of collecting food, as well as wildling rehabilitation. Perhaps those two guards could go on their Mammoth scouting mission and really bring back a mammoth. She will greatly appreciate a mammoth, if not for transportation, then at least for continuation of that species.
She went straight to her father after her conclusion is drawn. After she proposed the order of blue roses and winter knights, she left her father to contemplate possibility and impossibility of establishing those orders. Time has come for finding out what progress on those tasks. She will need generous amount of healers and leaders for the time to come. Sansa has started writing letters to other ladies of the north from the day she has proposed the order. She has fair few correspondents whom she can invite to winterfell, and start on her ladies order.
"Father." She greeted Ned Stark genially.
"Sansa!" Lord Stark greeted back with a little bit of trepidation and lot of surprise.
He knew that there is going to be another great change he and his wife won't like much. He also knew he will give in to this change no matter what, for he still hasn't found a good enough strategy to work against Sansa's persuasion
"I am wondering if you have thought about the order of blue rose any further?" Sansa asked without preamble. No point dragging out that which could not be avoided.
"Aye. It will not go over well with other lords to educate their daughters over much, Sansa." Lord Stark tried.
"You can appease them by offering better opportunities for their sons, Father. After all, a winter knight sounds far better than a north man." Sansa quipped.
Ned Stark sighed internally, though his face remained impassive.
"At the moment, we will be able to house all the daughters of lordly houses to masterly houses belonging to winterfell. Additionally, we can house hundred other ladies, I will leave you to decide on whom you will invite. The announcement for winter knights will go out at the same time. For now, Blackfish has agreed to take over the training of the order. Every north man is to serve on the wall for two years at the very least. After the service, men of merit will be knighted at the discretion ser Blackfish." Lord Eddard Finished.
"You have thought about it." Sansa responded with a very bright smile.
"I still think there are way too many obstacles for this to work, Sansa." her father warned her.
"I understand father. Yet, it is important children of summer understand winter at least a little, for winter is coming." Sansa said wisely.
Her father nodded back to her sombrely. The very fact that her father is giving in to her is a testimony to how good an idea it is. Uncle Benjen will be happy. Many of the second sons do not have an occupation, asking all of them to take up sword as nightswatch is impossible. This way, they can settle a host of second sons in gift with adequately good lives if not the same as their lordly brothers. Preferably, after serving two years, at least some of the smallfolk will be amenable to settling in gift. Thus the order of winter rose and winter knights both began, after maester Luwins suggestion on the change of name.
Sansa immediately created the symbols, a snowflake, sword, book and helmet quartered for winter knights. Their motto; Mettle, Merit, Might. For the winter roses, Sansa chose Ethos, Endeavour, Aeturnum. Her father nodded in satisfaction at the mottos. With in a few minutes, invitations went out to all of the northern lords, and first turn of villages.
It would have been quite helpful if Robb and Jon are here to help her out, but Robb is still on his quest at summer Isles, at least according to Bran. Jon is in kingslanding. He recently wrote of death of master of coin for corruption and treason. He proposed a Manderly second son for the post, and king accepted. That alone is quite a win in North's favor. The Manderly son is travelling through winterfell. Sansa planned to work out a deal with him. War will come to them regardless, for sooner or later king Robert will die. From what Sansa knew of history, there is no way any of the remaining leaders are conducive to peace. She needs to have a man to place Jon on throne in best case, or sabotage any war efforts towards north in worst.
Sansa read first agreement of Starks with iron throne. The north is bound in nothing but name and loyalty to the king. They don't even pay tax. Sansa intended to make it even more loose. From what Jon says, Joffrey Baratheon will make the shittiest king ever in history. She knew this from Silly Sansa's journal as well. Thus, she has to remove even the slightest influence iron throne has on winterfell. Yet, she knew it needs a subtle finesse as long as her father and King Robert are in command.
That is where Manderly son came in to picture. Sansa wanted to drain the crown of funds and redirect trade routes. Most of the northern lords are incapable of delicate maneuvering this required. She dearly hoped that men at top in kingslanding are blind to power of trade and money as nobles and kings of old are. She has heard good things of Manderlys. From what she remembered, the second Manderly son is soft spoken, has a good head for numbers and schemes. She needs to put together all she wants from Kingslanding.
Soon, the ladies started trickling in, as did men. All masterly houses sent every child including their first borns. Most kept only youngest with them. Sansa assumed the opportunity to be educated by best arms man in the north, and then serving under famous knight of the south is too good an opportunity to resist. Between Tyrion, Qyburn and Sansa they figured a basic education system for both the lords and ladies.
Sansa is surprised at how undereducated most of the children were. Some were taught letters and numbers, but that is it. They were not taught mathematics, nor tactics. Yet, they were taught local plants and animals, and when to pay rents. It is tedious and unthankful work to educate the ladies and lords. The boys hated having to sit indoors, though they loved arms lessons too much to go back home immediately.
The girls hated either the arms lessons or sewing lessons, how ever, they loved the hotsprings of winterfell too much to go back home. All of them unanimously hated praying in the sept. Her mother brought the argument to bring in a septa to teach the ladies, as did the septon, but her father disagreed. Thus, it remained they were taught sewing by a seamstress and music by a singer.
A lot more ladies than Sansa predicted are willing to learn healing, Even some men.
Sansa gained far more insight into north from her conversations with these children than she ever did from books. It is during these times she mentioned train track to some boy accidentally. With in a few days, the forrester boy put a miniature track in one of the experimental fields and called Sansa for a demonstration. The boys then had great deal of fun running on the tracks challenging each other to drag more weight than the other.
It is while looking at them Sansa realized while her steam engine is long way off, she can most definitely use horses and unicorns to pull trains on tracks. All the more better, even if someone were to steal the idea, they will need either unicorns or real sturdy horses to make a true difference, and that is not very possible in a place that is warm. With in six months, a workable track is running with an unicorn on the tracks.
Meanwhile, explosive progress followed in fabric industry. Sansa attributed it all to Meera reed. Once she has seen the petri dishes Sansa and Qyburn have for creating penicillin, Meera mentioned that there are a great many medicinal moss they grew in neck. Shocked, Sansa demanded she bring all the samples to winterfell. Thus, an isolated Lab was set up, and almost every bacterial culture from neck is reproduced.
Among them a rare bacteria which literally produced such perfect skin like colony, it could very well be used in place of leather. Then one of the inventors volunteered and developed further cultures, through which he developed first ever skin tight glove. Sansa almost danced in the middle of great hall when she saw it for the very first time. Either way, she had him given a knight ship immediately, of the winter knights and then had him setup industrial production.
This is the very first knighthood awarded in the name of old gods. Sansa even invented an entirely different ceremony for this. The man kept vigil in godswood, declared himself a winter knight by the witness of gods, on account of deeds, finally it ended with a challenge for any to come forward to question his knighthood. Then Sansa awarded him his own coat of arms, a book twice the size of other symbols of winter knights as a band on top, with a gray glove on white underneath it.
This kicked off a frenzy among small folk, both in neck and otherwise. People tried to create other fabrics from bacteria in droves. Many failed. Few succeeded, though none noteworthy. A man succeeded in creating dyes, another in staining flower petals as is on the fabric. What can she say, but one great discovery leads to thousand weird ones. Another figured out a way to process amber. In light of how much bio history this can preserve, Sansa had him given his own sigil, with the house name amber. An egg inside amber drop is his sigil. By this time, the craze has become an official thing, thus, an office of quests is founded. While Sansa is the head, inventors themselves added requests for all kinds of strange things.
In years to come, a great many people agreed this is the monumental moment from which history of north changed. Others went even a step further and said this is where the new era has begun. It must be said, they are onto something. For, this is the moment a true revolution of bio-engineering has begun. In the following year, they discovered a mushroom that processed industrial waste more efficiently than any other plant Sansa is aware of, a carnivorous plant which digested rats to rabbits, a crustacean which can grow in muddy lands, which is as good as lobster. All discoverers are rewarded with knight ship.
Sansa did not realize how far the fame of her quests and winter knight's mission reached until black brothers came to her with their own inventions, asking them to be appraised and paid for in the name of night's watch. While she did laugh uproariously in their faces, she has accepted their request. She introduced the mammoth hunting guard to them, since then, the brothers of the watch and the explorers have become two peas in a pod.
Meanwhile, she found out from them the land beyond wall is a truly changed place. It seems someone leaked the story of the cactus and horny unicorns to the watch. The maester, a truly curious bloke, set up knocked out the unicorns in a pit right outside the wall in order to observe. Sansa has no doubt it involved some kind of dick measuring bet somewhere in there, but long story short, there is a massive herd of unicorns roaming around haunted forest beyond the wall.
They dug tunnels even north of wall. The black brother swore if they increase any more in number, they will dig right through the wall. Either way, as the herd grew, so did life in their wake. As soon as the blessing passed through a patch of land, there are new sprouts of unknown variety. This sapling they brought her is the most interesting, frightening and mysterious one among all the new growth. Sansa observed the sapling. It is indeed interesting looking, with a near black trunk, that is unnaturally smooth, as strong as a stone and wide translucent leaves drooping by its sides.
"It's the warmth of this place. The tree does not look like that." The black brother insisted.
"What does it look like then?" Sansa asked.
"It stands straight, its leaves spread like plates. Some so big and strong, a bear can dance on them, they don't break." The black brother described.
"It looks like a useful tree. Did you harvest any such leaves?" Sansa asked curiously.
"We would have, milady, if we did not go mad long before we reached the copse." The black brother groused.
"Mad? Mad how?" Sansa asked.
She is aware in this time and day, anything that can not be explained away with science is explained away with magic, so she set on to questioning them. At the end of the day all she could come up is it's oxygen poisoning they are experiencing. She called maester qyburn to question them, along with the Meera. Meanwhile, she had the plant moved to top of great tower, which is but broken tower reconstructed recently to demonstrate usefulness of cement.
The facts they found about these plants are strange to say the least. They grew in a perfect lattice structure. As far as the copse spread, the ice is perfectly level. There were occasional floating white lights throughout the night through these copses. Sometimes, they discovered moving corpses of men and animals trapped under ice, in various states of decay. Usually, the corpses trapped in ice water do not decay at all.
Already, some one coined the term devil's grove, it has caught on. Add to all this, in some places, a translucent ice globe has formed on top of these groves, with life thriving in these globes. During nights, these globes are alight with dancing stars.
The looks of them very much sounded like a glass terrarium, with only small animals thriving with in. It is a rare phenomenon, but not impossible. After all, the steam could mold an ice cave, it could make the temperature inside and outside different. She could not make head or tails of dancing stars though. Unicorns seem to be able to traverse between these groves relatively freely, with breaking and entering terrariums to feed, sometimes congregating in the areas that induced madness, puffing up, breaking in to mad runs, then doing it all over.
Sansa could only conclude both these new fauna and unicorns have a different way of processing and dealing with oxygen. Perhaps, unicorns once upon a time roamed entire land, driven towards skagos only because of dwindling life during last ice age. Perhaps sea moved in long before they could return, so they were cut off. They truly must have been a integral part of the ecosystem before for so much life to thrive in their wake. Is this good or bad in long term? Sansa wondered.
Unfortunately, this drove even more wildlings towards wall, making ranging all the more perilous. On the plus side, they have heard of far more rumors among wildlings. That sometimes stars float on devils grove. That dead are walking, the others are hunting again. If you go farther than madness, then devils grove will sap the strength right out of your legs then add you to the growing dead in it's icy grave. The rumours only grew more and more wild and outrageous. So, Sansa decided the only way to confirm is with her own eyes. Thus, she moved the tree to the top of reconstructed broken tower, for that is the only place that resembled the tree's growing environment at least a little.
The watch brothers and adventurers left next morning, after Sansa added a thousand and one safety precautions for their journey, and one apprentice maester. After all, she has mad maesters to spare and more, given citadel is all too happy to send all they thought of as 'defensive goods' to herself. Some of them are great, some of them are utterly useless. Sansa found a use for all of them anyway.
It isn't until two weeks later she got the surprise. She went to visit the tree on top of broken tower. Watch brothers told true. The tree's leaves stood wide and strong, like plates. They are cold to touch, almost like glass. Sansa tapped on one of them, they even made the same sound as glass. But that's not true surprise. She thought the tree's current planter too small, so, she had the tree shifted a fairly bigger one, one that could accommodate a full grown tree. Perhaps one of the best decisions she has made.
A week after she made that change, the acolyte called on her excitedly, all too eager to show capabilities of the new tree. It was a trip well worth it. As soon as he reached there, acolyte released a lab rat near the trunk.
As soon as the rat took first step, small white lights began flashing under the ice. With in moments, what had been a clear ice on top of water turned into a sieve. The rat sunk and drowned in no time. It is then acolyte pointed out the missing tips of roots dramatically. It was not just fire, it's hydrogen burning underneath the water. Those are the floating lights. She stared at the little fires in shock.
"Keep it up my good man, you might just earn a knighthood one day. In fact, I will guarantee it if you find a way to extract those round little bubbles before they light up." She told the acolyte.
The tree is somehow doing electrolysis. This tree went above and beyond all she has known about any carnivorous plants, venturing into that myth of human eating plants. The plant produced some or other kind of electronic circuitry mechanism, which she is going to have maesters and alchemists both look in to. If only they could figure out a way to harness it, she can fast forward scientific discovery a decade. She set all maesters and acolytes she has on the job.
The results that came back couldn't be more helpful if god made a special creation for them. It almost had Sansa believe in existence of children of forest. The leaves make a kind of glass when dried and the trunk is fireproof. At least, no fire is hot enough to burn it, including wildfire. Both alchemists and maesters were over the moon with the discovery, thus the group going to north increased in size almost immediately.
The tree is far too sturdy to have died out of any kind of glacial apocalypse, even if they were buried to the tip in a single days snowfall. Yet, if it were to be buried under tens of feets of snow, It can be starved out. That realization did nothing but stress how destructive ice age will be. Sansa had no doubt that by the end of the ice age, every part of the north she is seeing will be buried under hundreds of feet of snow. That snow may melt, but the all the flora and fauna as she knew them now will perish.
Yet, it did not align correctly in her head. All the flora and fauna in north are made to survive winter conditions. Even if winter is awful as she is imagining, they survived one such ice age already, if she is interpreting long night legends correctly. They are probably even more equipped for surviving ice age than their predecessors. Sansa's thought process is broken by loud voices from below. Two of the young lads gotten in to a scuffle.
"Yes, the ball spins if you twist your wrist while you throw." one of the boys was shouting at another.
"Go ahead and show it then." another boy got in his face.
Sansa sighed and moved to break the boys. It occurred to her suddenly that the stars didn't align like she remembered. While she is no astrologist, she was an amature enthusiast. Now she realized that the stars are off, by an axis. Is it possible to twist a planet on its axis, she wondered. It probably is. How ever, if that were the case, there would have been tsunamis reported. She bet anything such a monumental event will leave geographic trace.
Sansa suddenly stopped in her tracks. It did leave geographic trace. There were carcasses of sea animals and freshwater fish in a certain period. The scientists called it the most curious, for there wasn't a way to kill as many fish species together. Then, there are legends of new age, which described a great city in the vast land of essos and it's people, washed away in some kind of water apocalypse without trace. She went to maester immediately to question about cities of essos. It did not take her long to figure out which city it is.
The city's name is vaes dothrak. The people are wandering nomads, with horse herds of great numbers, but they never settled any where. Gods, it makes sense, she thought. Had the planet really shifted on its axis, this race would have been wiped out without trace. Even as she extrapolated what she knew of sea levels and roughly twisted the globe, the idea fit like a glove to all that she knew. An ice age, and successive tsunamis. What's next, a proper super volcano explosion to top them all off? She grumbled to herself. But then, the super volcano explosion already happened.. Valyria sunk then.
They have too short walls if a tsunami of this proportion is to hit winterfell. Worse yet, there are no panic chambers of any kind, neither do they have any kind of disaster relief system. The relief from calamities in this time and day is far to dependent on whims of nobles. Who, more times than not did not even have basic knowledge of how to manage a disaster. North is probably a bit better than rest of the kingdoms, but only by a hairsbreadth. Damn.. She thought she could manage ice age. After all, if you provide food and heat, it more than suffices for survival.
Disasters of cosmic proportions are entirely different matter. Even in modern day, a limit existed on how much can be done. Nature is and will always be more powerful than man. Yet, they must prepare. Hells, they should grab every last advantage they can, their very survival depends on it. Perhaps she should prepare for the trifecta of disasters. Ice age, Tsunami and Volcanic eruption. After all, volcanoes that brought doom to valyria did not sleep as of yet, Even though, in Sansa's time and age, that entire strip is just another continent.
Thus decided, she moved onwards. Perhaps they need to put more stress on winter knights program than they are currently. In addition to that, all women must be trained too. If push comes to shove, she will over play the wildling invasion and king beyond wall. Gift must be farmed. The railways must be built, and worse yet, they will need a fleet. A fleet of gigantic proportion, capable of evacuating entire north if need be. She needs an entirely new plan. It's time for Robb to come home.
Though she decided that, there is nothing she could do immediately. The winter knights program is already started, so did the blue roses program. The railways, while of immense use, are far too costly to be taken upon without enough preparation. They need a way to make money, and they need that money fast. It is then it struck her like a lightning. Aluminium.
In this time and day, it is called rose gold. As fraudulent as it made her feel, she is going to have to hoard gold, then when entire south is awash with the cheap metal, she could release the extraction procedure, depleting their gold stores. If the war were to happen like she read in silly sansa's diary, it will take life out of any rebellion against Starks. But first, she had to get the electricity working.
Sansa slept with a thousand ideas in her head, woke up with none. Every endeavour she has marked mandatory has taken a hundred years or more to accomplish in her world. Worse yet, these monumental tasks have been undertaken by governments with far more wealth than North. Before she could sink further in to despair, her maid knocked on her door. Time for her to wake up and get ready.
The Manderly son seems to have arrived early in the morning. Sansa is supposed to meet him for breakfast and discuss her plans along with her father. Her father merely congratulated the man, explained purpose of new orders established by the north, left it at that. Sansa barely stopped herself from expressing her incredulity at the nonchalance of her father. As her temper cooled, she realized this is medieval period. No one but her have any idea about what's coming. She will only be treated as mad woman if she were to express her predictions, just like Danys the dreamer.
She must wrap her predictions in some or other kind of realistic concerns that are norm for this age. It needs subtle manipulation, yet, Sansa at her core did not understand this age. She is very much a modern woman, with modern woman values. Yet, she knew all she needed is one adult in her corner. She dearly hoped that she could convince this particular Manderly to her view point.
To her pleasant surprise, she found Lord Manderly all too willing to go with her plans. It seemed the Northern lords were all too unhappy with how Robert Baratheon dealt with aftermath of war. Many of them seem to think he did not pay north his dues, as north played as much a role in putting him on the throne as vale, yet, they did not seem doing north a single favor for such great service rendered. Yes, they went along for revenge, but the fact is Northern army reached the castle first. By the rights of conquest, the castle and all its riches belonged to north. Yet, Robert has taken them without so much as a thank you, and not a single stag offered in return.
Fortunately, Summer has been long and Ned Stark a brilliant administrator, thus these unhappy feelings remained just that. Feelings. No one in right mind went against a Stark of winterfell because of hurt feelings. It is just not done. Loyalty for Starks is bred deep, there is nothing that broke it even with all the mayhem that occurred in coming ten thousand years. Thus, in Lord Manderly Sansa found a willing accomplice.
Even with all of their new found camaraderie, Lord Manderly would never have explicitly helped Sansa if not for the dire news that arrived next day. Jon caught a terrible fever. There is concern he might not survive this ordeal.

Believe it or not, I have written this chapter for six months. Wrote it and rewrote it. Finally, I decided it's not going to get anywhere - so I am putting it out as is.. Braving all the fire.
