Gear knew what he was doing was a bit uncalled for and goes against everything he thought a friend should have behaved, but he needed to confirm something. He didn't want to take any chances with this matter, seeing things with your own eyes will always put away any worries, is how he justified it. So that's why he was following Static right now, Gear needs to see if at the first noted opportunity he had by himself would Static try to see this aforementioned girl. A girl that Static apparently couldn't pry from his mind, Gear would just follow him this once to watch if he visited her, if Static didn't visit her then Gear would trust him to be alone again but if he did turn out to visit her... Gear felt he should worry about any such outcome if and when the time came. He didn't want to think about his friend breaking his word to him, he had faith in him.
Gear kept a reasonable distance away, tracking Static by a radar he had built into his outfit, he was able to follow Static's current location by his helmet screen just in case he lost him. But most of the time Gear hopped from rooftop to another rooftop, hiding behind anything that was layed on top of the roofs of the buildings, always making sure he had visual contact on his friend. If Gear went straight out flying behind Static then that would have made Gear too conspicuous, so in the shadows is where he stayed.
The majority of the time, Static just kept flying about through the skies, patrolling and not looking for anything in particular. Must have been a pretty boring day for him, these are one of the rare instances that Gear wasn't by his side. Gear did have errands to run with his family as Richie but they were easily and quickly taken care of. Since he was already away from his friend with a legitimate reason then Gear took advantage of the opportunity to watch over Static, even how hypocritical that may appear now.
Almost an hour has passed and Static hasn't done anything out of the ordinary, Gear was starting to feel guilty that he had ever conceived the idea that his friend would break his word. Gear considered whether he should leave him be for now and go back home or, even better yet, come out into the open and apologize for following him. As Gear was contemplating his options, he noticed that Static hung back for a moment or two. Gear's heart skipped a bit for a second, he must of have been taking too long on weighing his options out that his best friend must have realized he was there. Gear thought that Static was just waiting now for Gear to reveal himself, but suddenly Static took off again before he could do anything.
Added to that now, Static was traveling a bit more quickly than he had before and with purpose, he was definitely looking for something now. Gear couldn't help noticing that he stopped again at a particular street and avenue then began scanning over all of the apartment buildings. Gear observed his face as Static was tracing a row of windows. He had to try a bit harder to not be seen by Static, now that he was out looking for something, anything out of the ordinary would quickly be picked up by him.
Static apparently found what he was looking for as he slowly began to descend down to a building than to a particular window.
"What?"Gear whispered to himself as he watched his friend lean into a window.
After a few knocks at the window, a girl came to the window to answer him.
That was the girl then! Gear closed his hand into a tight fist, he was angered at the fact that his friend didn't waste any time in breaking his word. Betting that Static hasn't even thought of his promise, never even giving it a second thought. It didn't take him long to try to find this girl the second he was alone, he knew Static way too well.
Suddenly, Gear raised up a confusing eyebrow as he watched Static making his way over the window and enter into the room.
"Uhh...?!" Gear couldn't believe his eyes. He slid down against the wall his back was resting on and placed his face in his hands, elbows being held up by his knees.
He couldn't help notice the burning heat capturing his face and ears, after seeing that he couldn't help but let his mind wander to the idea that Static and that girl are closer than what he let on in their conversation.
"Why else would he enter her room so nice, cool, and collected?!" Gear shouted in his mind." Wow, it's only been a few days since he last saw her if what he told me before was true."
Gear himself wasn't experienced at all when it came to girls and that never bothered him even when other brutes in his school would try to convince him otherwise. But to think that his best friend never told him he had a girlfriend, not that he wanted to know the very personal details, he just thought he would at least be trusted upon. But then, Gear was pulled out from his inner thoughts when he heard a consistent fluttering near his left ear. He pulled his head from his hands and turned it towards the sound to his left and watched a grayish bird flying in place.
"Ah!" Gear yelped as he got up and away from the bird." I so don't need bird poop on my custom tech."
The bird lowered itself to the floor and just stared up at him, it looked like it was just waiting for something.
"Shoo! Get out of here!" Gear waved his hands at it, hoping it would be enough to scare it away from him, it wasn't.
The bird took quick and small steps towards him and was just about to get on Gear's shoe until he jumped over and away from the bird again."Nope, not on my jet boosters."
The small bird tried again, walking quickly towards Gear, only to miss him again when he kept on jumping over and away from the small, delicate, creature.
The little bird turned its body over to face him and then he started to chirp very loudly. Not in a singing way but a very hard and annoying, crying shrill. Gear looked over to the window where Static entered to see if the noise was heard from that far off, it didn't look like it was, but still, he didn't want to be given away that he was spying on Static. He could take the idea that he was found out by a stupid bird.
"Ok, ok, ok, ok, what's wrong? You hungry?" Gear kneeled down on one knee and only leaned over the bird. "How is it you are not scared of people?"
The bird didn't do anything but keep on crying.
"I'm right here, what is it that you want?!" Gear was becoming more and more frustrated as the crying kept on in its constant volume. Gear couldn't think of anything to make a bird feel better, he would offer food but it wasn't like he was carrying bird feed. He thought back to when the bird was following him so maybe it wanted to be held, how? like a baby?
Gear internally groaned as he wasn't very fond of animals so he wouldn't know the first idea on how to handle them. He held out his hands to the crying bird and cupped it into his hands, at the moment that he did the bird calmed down, letting out one happy chirp.
Now that he had a closer look at the bird as he raised it up to his face, the bird didn't look like a common old pigeon. More like some exotic bird, so he came to the conclusion that this bird was a pet.
"Oh, I get it now, you belong to that girl from the window, don't you? Yeah, that's it, I remember him telling me she had a pet bird. You must be it." He rolled his eyes at the fluffy creature." Honestly, I don't see much of the appeal that they both have in you."
Gear watched as the bird began to fluff itself into a bigger ball of feathers then slowly rotated its head to rest on its back.
"Wait, what? What are you doing?" Gear said in disbelief. "Are you falling asleep?!"
Why now!? Just when he wanted to resort to dropping the bird off the edge of the building so he can force it to fly away home. He can't use that option now with the bird asleep in his hands.
Gear looked over at the window just in time to see Static make his way out, apparently getting ready to leave. He didn't stay in there very long, he noted, especially not enough time to - "No!" Gear forced himself not to finish that thought, that wasn't his business.
Gear watched as they said their goodbyes and Static slowly began to fly away from her window, he must be going home now. The girl closed her window after a while of staring off in the direction Static flew off to.
"Oh no, I'm in trouble." Gear kneeled back down and shook his hands gently." Come on, wake up. That girl is your owner, right? Then go to her."
"Kat!" Gear heard the resonance of a soft voice, disparity sounding in her voice. "Where are you?!"
Gear hid himself down even further so she won't spot him now that she was scanning everything with her eyes in search of her missing pet.
He would be more than happy to go to her and return her pet but there was no existing reason what so ever for him just to go up to her. It would be way too obvious that he had been watching everything between her and Static.
No, the only option that he had was to have the bird fly itself over to her but even that wasn't possible. It was asleep, and it wasn't like he could shake it awake, birds are delicate creatures with very fragile bones.
He looked back over the edge and noticed her starting to break down in tears, she slowly eased down her window, her sobs becoming harder to hear until he couldn't hear it anymore.
Gear finally stood up when he knew she wasn't going to show up by her window again. He looked down at his hands, seeing the bird release small whistles as it slept.
His face contorted into frustrated anger, thinking of what to do with the bird now; he could fly to her window now and place the bird there but she most likely would spot him. He could leave the bird here where he was but he didn't know what predators were out there that would hunt a vulnerable bird. The only other option he could think of was to take the bird with him and try to figure out later on when and how to return it home.
"What a mess, I'm in." Gear turned on the jet boosters of his boots and slowly rose up in the air." Dammit, Virgil!"
He took off home.
Author's Note: I want to thank everyone for the reviews I have recieved so far, it does encourage me to write a bit more often. At the moment, many things in my life has been getting in my way to have time to write and I have been feeling a bit frustrated and sad at some points, but writing does really bring me solace.
So, opinions on the story, anyone? :) I ask because I like to see what you all come up with and who knows maybe you can give me some ideas that might actually end up in the story at some point.
See you later!
