Author's Note: Sorry for the delay! I know I mentioned that I might possibly have had this chapter out before the New Year, but alas, this chapter was a bit tougher to write. It is, unfortunately, the last chapter of this story. I have been thinking about a new Rookie Blue story, but have not worked out all of the details as of yet. I am trying to finish several others stories that I have up before thinking about starting anything new besides one-shots. I hope everyone enjoys this chapter!
Epilogue
Three months later...
Gail shivered as she nearly dropped her keys attempting to open the door to Holly's house. She turned the knob and the door swung open with a slam as the wind ripped it out of her hand. Rushing through the threshold, the blonde closed the door with her body as she slumped against the door. The wind howled outside and rattled the windows in the house. Gail sighed as she shivered again. The cold numbed her to her bones as she had been out on the field the entire day. It felt nice to be back inside after such a day. 'I'm glad Holly made sure there was enough oil for the boiler before this storm hit,' the police officer thought as she struggled to remove her gloves from her stiff fingers.
"Is that you, babe?" a voice called out from the kitchen as the officer finally shrugged off her coat.
Gail smirked and shook her head, "Who else would it be? Or are you waiting for someone else? If that's the case, should I leave or should I have my gun ready?"
Holly walked through the doorway and rolled her eyes as she neared Gail. "I wasn't sure if I had heard the door or not. I was in the kitchen listening to the weather report, so I wasn't a hundred percent certain I had heard anything."
The blonde smiled as she leaned in to kiss the pathologist. Smirking as she ended the kiss, Gail replied, "So, this is how you spend your days off? Listening to the radio, but calling out to see if I am home when you hear a random noise?"
The brunette huffed as she lightly slapped the other woman's arm. "You told me what time you were coming home. They had happened to say the time a little before you came in so I heard something; therefore I called out to make sure it was you." She gestured for the blonde to follow her into the kitchen as she continued. "Ever since I met you, my life has been anything but ordinary."
"I could say the same about my life," Gail murmured as she stepped into the kitchen and took a deep breath as the smell of dinner invaded her nose.
Holly turned at Gail's comment. "Really? I seem to recall a story about you being abducted within your first couple of years with Division 15." She stirred the soup in the pot. "Anyway, how was your day?"
"Freezing," Gail replied as she sat down on the bar stool and rested her head in her hands. "I was outside all day."
"What happened? I didn't hear anything in the news reports, nor did I receive a call from the morgue."
"No, it's nothing like that," Gail stated quickly, lifting her head from her hands, as she tried to reassure her lover. "We were just driving around all day, ensuring the roads were safe."
"I guess the storm has officials on edge," Holly commented as she added a dash of pepper before placing the lid on the pot.
"I think there is more to it than that. I think they are purposely sending me out on patrols that are cake-walks. The most exciting thing I have been out on was for a sixty-two year old woman who called because she thought someone had stolen her car. In the end, she had forgotten where she had parked it."
"Well," Holly began as she tried not to laugh. "It could have been a dangerous job."
Gail sighed as she lowered head onto the table. "I think mom is behind it all or Steve... I haven't figured it out yet."
"Have you heard from Chris yet?" Holly asked, trying to change the subject. The pathologist knew for a fact that Gail's mother was behind her daughter receiving less demanding work-load, but would never tell her lover about it. It would devastate the blonde to know that her mother, Steve, and Oliver were worried that she might end up in a situation that could eventually get her killed.
Gail lifted her head from off the table and smiled at the swift change of subject. "Yeah, he got out of rehab the other day. He seemed happier while I was talking to him on the phone."
"Does he know when he is coming back?"
"He didn't say, but I know when he does come back, he's will have to start all over again basically," the blonde shook her head sadly. "He really fucked up."
Holly sat on the other stool. "It happens," she whispered softly. "Most addicts believe they have everything under control and can stop at any time, but the harsh reality of it all is that they can't."
"Dov had thought about throwing Chris a party when he got out, but changed his mind at the last minute. He thought..."
"He thought that it would cause Chris to fall back to drugs?" Holly asked as she leaned her elbow against the table. "It's always possible, but then again it is possible for him to slip off the wagon whenever. I think a party might have been best for him. A show of support from all of his friends."
"That's what I said to Dov," Gail said with a smile. "We didn't need alcohol at the party. Just some food, music, and his close friends. Something to let him know that we were there for him if he needed us."
Holly thought about it for a moment. She had thought about a small party for Chris before she had known when he was getting out, but thought she was overstepping some sort of boundaries or something. 'I'm not even really his friend,' she had told herself when the idea had popped into her head. 'I'm just one of his friend's girlfriend. Sure, I had talked to him before, but that was it talk... not hanging out.' "There's still time," the pathologist replied suddenly, slightly shocking her own self with her words.
"Huh?"
"For a party," she elaborated with a sigh. "You said he got out the other day, so why can't we all throw a small party just to celebrate his return to Division 15? It doesn't have to be anything lavish... it can be exactly like you said, food, music, and his close friends."
"We are about to have the biggest snow storm since 1911, and you are making plans for a party?" Gail asked incredulously as she narrowed her eyes. "Who are you and what have you done with my Holly?"
Holly rolled her eyes again. "You know I am up for a party. Remember Frank and Noelle's wedding? Besides, it doesn't have to be right this minute. We need to talk to everyone first, plus we need to make sure that Chris is even up to it. He might just want to drive to Timmins to spend time with his son. He hasn't seen him in three months."
Gail bit her lip at Holly's mention of Christian. "I don't think he is going to be able to see his son anytime soon. Denise is trying to get full custody and also trying to keep Chris from seeing Christian."
"That's not fair," Holly commented as she removed her glasses and rubbed her eyes. "I am sure he never meant for any of this to happen. He was in a low place in his life... he still is, that doesn't give her any right to take away the little bit of happiness he has."
"I know that," Gail replied as she reached for the brunette's glasses and placed them on the table. "But she feels as though it will protect Christian from anymore pain. Remember when he was kidnapped by his real father? The poor boy still has nightmares about it and Denise feels that this will only exacerbate her son's psyche; or at least that is what Chloe said that Dov said when he spoke to Denise."
"When did you speak to Chloe?" Holly asked as she reached for her glasses again. "I thought you would have tried to stay away from her since she was the one that got you into the situation we were both in a few months back."
Gail shrugged her shoulders and smirked. "I guess she is okay, I mean it did get us back together, right?"She ran her hands through her hair and huffed. "I talked to her today while we were on patrol. Oliver seems intent on pairing me with her from now on. I don't know if he thinks it will keep me safe with her, but from all the times I have been paired with her in the past, trouble always seems to be around."
Holly chuckled softly as she watched the obvious look of discomfort run across her lover's features. "Please don't tell her I said she was okay... she will never leave me alone if she realises I tolerate her presence."
The pathologist patted the blonde's shoulder sympathetically as she stood up and went back to the stove. "I promise I won't tell a soul that you actually have a heart."
"Hey!" Gail exclaimed as she stood up as well. "I happen to have a heart," she muttered as she crossed her arms and stared at the woman in front of the stove.
Holly smirked as she turned around to face the petulant woman. "I know, honey, but sometimes you like to hide the fact from the rest of the world." She turned off the oven and walked over to the blonde. "But I do enjoy it when you allow me to see just how much of a sweet and caring person you are."
Gail walked over to Holly. "Just don't talk anymore," she whispered as her lips grazed the pathologist's.
The brunette moaned at the contact and wrapped her arms around the blonde's waist. "I won't say another word," she muttered softly against the officer's lips before deepening the kiss.
The two women stumbled out of the kitchen and down the hall, only one place on both of their minds as they grabbed at each others clothing. Holly felt her back hit the wooden door to the bedroom, 'their bedroom' she corrected her own thought as Gail's hand left its place on her hip and reached for the door-knob. 'Oh how I had dreamt of this scenario when we broke up. Now, I get to live it everyday,' she thought to herself as the door gave way behind her.
Ever since that one case that saw them both trapped in a panic room, the two women decided it was best to stay together in Holly's house. Sure, they had their differences, but who doesn't? No matter the differences between them, the two women made the relationship work. Their past solidified their present in a way that nothing that life could throw at them would keep them away from each other.
'Everything is just perfect,' the pathologist thought as they moved into the room and towards the bed. It was in these moments that Holly believed that nothing would ever break the two up again. 'We have been through so much in the past couple of months. It's not like last time. This time it was both of us that went through the trauma of nearly dying, not just one of us. We are stronger as a couple now than...' A gasp drawn from her own mouth caused her thoughts to cease as her back hit the soft mattress.
The storm began its onslaught outside, but the occupants inside were not disturbed by Mother Nature's display. It was to be the largest snowfall in several decades... a whopping .61 metres in the course of a 30 hour period. Normally, it would cause most to worry over how they were going to get to work or what they were going to do about food shopping, but the two occupants inside the house could not care less. They were otherwise occupied with each other as fat, fluffy snowflakes whipped around, dancing to their own music in the harsh brutal wind.
Soft moans and gasps of pleasure echoed throughout the bedroom as the two women reacquainted themselves with each other. It had only been the previous night since their last escapade, but every touch of skin and lips felt as though it was the first time. Minutes turned to hours while the two women shared their love for one another.
Sighing from exhaustion, Holly looked up at Gail from her position on the blonde's stomach. A smile graced the pathologist's lips as she stared into the officer's bright blue eyes. "I think dinner is cold by now," she stated softly.
"You think?" Gail replied with a smirk as she stretched her arms out to the side to work the kinks out of her body. "Did you remember to turn it off?"
Holly scoffed at the question as she moved further up onto the bed and settled down beside the blonde. "Of course I did! You haven't heard the smoke alarm have you?"
The officer smirked at the defensive tone from the brunette. "I was just making sure," she replied with a chuckle. She wrapped an arm around Holly's shoulder and sighed. "Should we eat now or wait until the morning?" Gail asked as she glanced at the clock and saw that it was shortly after midnight.
"I thought you wouldn't want anything else to eat after what we did," Holly murmured playfully by the blonde's ear causing the officer to blush profusely. Before the blonde could retort, Holly was up from the bed and had ambled over towards the window. The brunette could here the howl of the window over the radiator in the corner of the room and she shivered involuntarily as she watched the snow dance in the wind's embrace. "It really is bad out there," she stated as she shivered again. "I am glad that we had prepared for it beforehand."
Gail crawled out of the bed with the blanket in her hand. She walked towards the brunette and wrapped the blanket around both of them. "Did you really have to walk to the window with no clothes on?" the officer questioned as she pulled Holly closer. Without waiting for an answer, the blonde continued, "It really is coming down out there. I don't think the weather reports really capture the severity of this storm."
Holly chuckled at the other woman's statement as she turned away from the window to face the blonde. She nuzzled into Gail's neck and took a deep breath, sighing contently as she breathed in the blonde's scent. "I actually like that the storm is this bad," she murmured as she lips grazed the officer's neck.
"Why is that?" Gail asked as she gripped the brunette's hips tightly.
"Maybe we can be snowed in and stay like this for a whole week," Holly replied as she ran her hands over Gail's bare back. "I am sure that Oliver would be okay with you taking a much needed vacation because we are trapped again; but this time we are trapped in a whole house because of a storm and not other things."
Before the officer could comment on Holly's admission, her phone rang in the kitchen. "Who could be calling me this late?" Gail muttered as she walked towards the sound of her phone. She reached it before the caller could hang up. "Hello?" Gail paused as she listened to the person on the other side; a frown had formed hard lines on the blonde's face as her silence filled the room.
Holly walked into the kitchen when she had no longer heard the officer speak on the phone. She glanced at Gail questioningly when she saw the frown on the blonde's face. When she noticed the pathologist, Gail shook her head solemnly and mouthed "Oliver" causing the brunette to nod her head and walk towards the stove. The pathologist grimaced when she lifted the cover of the pot. The soup, which she had spent over an hour cooking and preparing, had congealed and started to smell. 'I guess a home cooked meal was not in the cards tonight,' she thought to herself as she moved the pot off the stove and walked over to the sink. She dumped the soup into the garbage disposal with a sigh. 'Now what are we going to eat.' She stopped her inner monologue with herself when she finally heard Gail speak.
"I understand, Oliver. Sure I will tell Holly what is going on," Gail said as she nodded her head to whatever else the man was saying. "Okay, I will see you then." She turned her phone off and sighed as she went back to the bedroom. Holly quickly ran the water through the drain and flicked the disposal switch on before turning everything back off and following her lover into the bedroom. She stopped in the doorway when she saw Gail throwing pajamas on. "What happened now? You don't have to leave do you? I mean you wouldn't be putting your pajamas on if you were leaving, that would be crazy. But it would be even crazier if you were leaving out in this storm."
Gail chuckled softly at Holly's rambling then huffed as she pulled her shirt over her head. "No, I am not leaving out. Oliver wanted to tell us about Anna Schlenz."
Holly walked over to the dresser and pulled a long shirt out of the drawer and put it on. "Why did he have to call so late? It must have been able to wait until morning."
Gail shook her head slowly. "She was found dead in her cell about an hour ago."
"Do they suspect foul play?" Holly asked as she wondered why she didn't receive a call before Gail.
"No, it was suicide. I guess she finally realised what she had done and just decided to end it before the court could put her away for life," Gail stated as she looked at the ground. "They even found a note in her cell."
"I wouldn't think that this would have gotten you so down," Holly replied as she ran her hand down the blonde's back. "She was in for some pretty serious shit, to be frank."
"I know," Gail muttered as she took a deep breath and let it out loudly. "It's just now we may never know the real reason behind the death of Ms. O'Neal."
"Her husband is still in jail, right?" the pathologist asked as she bit her bottom lip. "He said they thought there was drugs in the house since she was a doctor... which is a stupid reason to break in, because no doctor carries drugs home with them... that's only in the movies and TV. Shows, but that is besides the point. What the real point I am trying to make is that we still have at least one person behind bars that had been apart of this crime, so the victim will get the justice they deserve, right?"
"Yeah, I guess you are right," Gail said with a sigh as she glanced out the window. "And from what Oliver said, she did confess to everything and mentioned that her brother was wearing a pair of shoes that were her husband's when he kicked Patricia. It's just that I had hoped there would have been a bit more justice for her, you know? One of her murders were killed, the other killed herself and all we have to show for the whole thing is the man who was an accessory to the crimes."
Holly stood up and offered her hand to the blonde. "Come on," she said with a smile. "I have just the thing that will take this whole situation off your mind."
"I don't think I want to have that soup," Gail retorted as she grabbed the brunette's hand and followed her out the door.
Holly rolled her eyes, "No. I threw that out, but I do have a nice wine in the refrigerator. We can drink that then maybe go back to bed..." she stopped in front of Gail causing the blonde to run into her. "Or not. It is all up to you."
"I think I am feeling better all ready," Gail replied as she ran her hand up the pathologist's side. "How about we bring the wine into bed with us?"
"I think that might be an even better idea."
