My wife is deaf (there is a difference between little 'd' deaf and big 'D' Deaf depending on your cultural affiliation) and I could see where you were going with this. I found it incredibly cute. I have totally followed my wife calling her name in the store many times.

I do want to point out that reading lips is actually incredibly hard, with so much of what makes up our words being done by the tongue inside the mouth. There is also the fact that not everyone enunciates, but that is a little beside the point I'm making. Lip reading is a mix of reading the lips and tongue, any sound you can hear (if you are hard of hearing), and a whole lot of divining what could be being said based on the conversation and what you know of the people you are speaking with. When my wife and I were just starting out as friends she gave me an example of how off things could look on someones lips, saying "I love you" looks exactly like "elephant shoes." We actually sign elephant shoes now as a great obscure way to say that we love each other. She had a fairly easy time of lip reading me since I learned to speak clearly from all my theater classes, but I also would start to speak faster when excited and I would sometimes have to repeat, and slow down my speech, at times also using the finger spelling I learned as a child. I've been learning sign from her and I will be starting classes in the fall to become an interpreter.

That brings me to a question I had, is Wade using finger spelling or signs? Because even using CASE (Conceptually Accurate Signed English) he would not get that phrase since neither ASL or CASE uses a lot of the small connecting words. "I like you" is simple to sign and then he could sign "I want" and make the gesture for holding hands and actually grab Peters hand, then "fuck on bear r-u-g" would be the signs to follow. The sign for "sex" is the sign for gender in sign, it's a common and hilarious mistake many people make (You want gender? Oh you mean sex, as in doing it, the sign is *mimics both hands bouncing together with the pointer and middle finger pointing out like legs*). So in terms of accuracy making that more clear would help and I could totally see Wade signing to hold hands and doing it at once!

Overall I appreciated this, and like some of the details given, like being sure to catch the persons attention before speaking and others mentioned above. I did take the leap of not letting lip reading being so bloody difficult detract from the story, though I think it would add to the story to have that included. The fact that Wade grabbed Peter's arm instead of shoulder was appropriate as well, since someone culturally deaf would be used to the shoulder being touched but not their arm being grabbed.
