Wow. Just wow. I felt chills reading this! This is by far the best fanfic I have read. Bartimaeus and his footnotes are so in character, it felt like this was an extension of the other books. Like Jonathon Stroud, your vocabulary is amazing and every word had a purpose. Well done.

Also I love the way this is organized! It is a oneshot but has so much going on, and it was brilliant the way you made the girl who was getting revenge make it so that Bartimaeus becomes this famous Djinni. Poor Bartimaeus though,to be dismissed "for good" but actually becoming the most popular djinn to summon! Good for us though! Haha "greatest psychologist." Is this because he was literally in Nathaniel's head? XD

Hello, there. My friend-who apparently reviewed this story four years ago-recommended this story to me as the best one in the fandom after all but shoving the books down my throat. And, may I just say: she didn't steer me wrong. She usually doesn't. This is so well-done. It's realistic, not overly-fluffy, not overly-sad. Though there is a tragedy to it all. Assuming humanity can continue to progress for a few centuries, I could totally imagine a scenario in which humanity needs to be taught. I liked the differences that you made in the human race through time. My one critique is that I missed Kitty being an element of this. Clearly she was a human who meant a lot to Bart as well, but she's sadly missing from this chapter of his life. Aside from that, lovely work, really.

Hi, me again. I'd just like to say for the record that this is one of those fics that remind me that fanfiction can be literature unto itself, exploring the human condition just as we've been doing since we started writing. Of course then I'll try and slog through another "Nathaniel doesn't die and hijinks ensue" story and come crashing back down to earth. Still, this is an excellent short story; with just a bit of tweaking, you might even be able to make it a compelling standalone work.

Even so, I have to point out ONE thing that bothers me; why doesn't Bartimaeus take Kitty's form? Hell, she was the only reason he ended up trusting Nathaniel enough to do the thing in the first place! It's a real shame, because this conceptual snapshot is a compelling one-but the total omission of Kitty takes some of its power away.

In a way, I suppose this story works best as a standalone piece, not even tied to the Bartimaeus trilogy because the ideas it explores are so strong. But by omitting one of the main characters, it fails to serve as a flawless continuation of the Bartimaeus trilogy. Still, though. Solid freakin' stuff. I'm definitely keeping a copy on my computer in case this somehow gets deleted!

You know, I cried when I read this. Beautifully crafted and somehow I could see how this would be real if Bart's story ever continue. It wringed me hard when I first realize that Bart used Nathaniel's form like he used Ptolemy's, telling the world that he held Nathaniel as dear as Ptolemy. I like the last part the most, I couldn't help but feeling sentimental when Bart admit that he was indeed the djinn with two faces...

This is great, showing possible consequences of Bartimaeus's sentimentality and the power of names. I love how he's trying to act like his old self, but you can feel him grow older and more subdued over the course of this fic, as his reputation impacts his life.
Also the part with the girl taking revenge on him on behalf of her grandmother (who recorded the conversion because of modern technology!) was amazing.

It would be really cool if you wrote another chapter but if you did you would have to be careful you don't ruin it. But seriously, amazing work. Oh God. I didn't know anything could hurt as much as the last book, but this did. The brief description of Bartimaeus, with the comparison of his personality to fire and air, was probably the most beautifully written line I've ever read for this fandom. You're a really skilled author; I read once that Stroud himself said his inspiration for the series was to "reverse" traditional roles (magicians the villains, demons the heroes, etc.) and I think your evolving depiction of Bartimaeus as the epitome of humanity captures that perfectly. Well done

is it odd... that I find this a nigh perfect epilogue? You are really only missing one little part... the footnotes... but then, this IS about how names change Djinn... and with a name enforcing humanity... how WOULD a Djinn change? But then, the Footnotes were meant as a representation of how different a Djinn was from a human, that a Djinn could have two, three, and even four thoughts within a single word... how very very strange then... yes, how very very strange
