This is incredible! It's well written and emotionally intense. I love how it gives a little background, but it is very subtle and seamless. I love how it is about moving on, but you still feel all the emotion if THIS moment. The line, "She lays a hand on his heart, an unexpected warmth against cold blood" blew me away. I feel like that sums up so much of Lisbon's effect on Jane's life in a single, beautiful phrase. As much as I loved it, I think you should keep it as is - the ending is spectacular. I love the repetition of the words as he struggles - I love using this style to convey inner conflict in my own writing. I love where it stops, too. It has the reader holding on, wishing, wondering what his response will be. Normally, that would have me begging for a follow-up, but this one works so beautifully as is.
