P90s are submachine guns, not assault rifles. Most assault rifles are over twice as long as a P90, and ergo have longer barrels which give them a LOT more range. P90s are accurate out to about 25 metres; an M16A2 assault rifle (the standard-issue rifle in the US military during the time period in which the SG-1 show was set) is accurate to about 350 metres. (The bullets fired by these weapons do travel further than these distances, though, you just can't reliably hit what you're aiming at past those distances.) For comparison purposes, sniper rifles are generally accurate to AT LEAST 600 metres; some makes are accurate out to over two kilometres.
