Good story couldn't stop reading it

Very nice story. I found myself hoping that Merlin would be brought back with "Emrys" claiming to "swap fates" with the deceased servant - where the young Merlin gets to live, but also has to take on the role that Arthur believes "Emrys" was destined to fill. If old Merlin played up his age and the little time he supposedly had left, his willingness to die could be convincing to Arthur. The old Merlin could claim to want to leave the daunting task of chasing after Arthur to a younger man, and we could get a Merlin magic reveal without Arthur discovering that he had ever been lied to. He would just have to come to grips with the idea that the returned Merlin now had the powers and responsibilities of the old sorcerer, which Arthur's experiences with old Merlin seemed to have set him up well to be ready to do. And Merlin would no longer have to assume the aches and stiff joints of age in order to do magic in front of Arthur. We get way too many magic reveal fics on this site, but that would be a different one, and one that would avoid the endless chatter of most reveal scenarios in which Arthur inevitably needs the entire events of the last ten years explained to him through the prism of this new vital insight - even if he has questions, he'll believe the man with the answers to be dead. It would leave a few loose threads, like the great dragon's continued survival, but they could be resolved when the time came.

The ending you settled on makes the story fit better into the series, of course, and apart from Mordred's apparent reveal of Merlin to Morgana at the end, the whole thing could slot into sequence between actual TV episodes without disrupting the canon of the show. Thanks for a story that felt like getting more of the show, and thanks for taking the time to proofread it.
