I like the introspection very much. I like to think that Watson is pretty messed up by Maiwand, both physically and mentally, but he overcomes it in time (thanks to some help from an unexpected source).

I think in those circumstances, that OOC really isn't that far off. Watson said very little about his time in the service, even in STUD when he was introducing himself. Despite all his experiences, it was never really spoken of thereafter. There had to be a reason that a personality like his wouldn't have wanted to dig too deep into those memories, right?

Personally, I loved it. Thank you for taking the time to share. Even when thoughts like these are converted into fanfiction for therapy, it doesn't mean they don't have their uses. You'd be amazed how many people just need to know they're not alone in their own minds with these thoughts.

No, don't feel bad - I think it makes him more believable to have flaws. IF you can even call this a flaw, opposed to just human nature. As well it's his POV, so he may even be going harder on himself than someone else would.

Impressive work which carries well and sombrely to other wars. There is a slight feel of the trenches of world war one about it, particularly. Might be because of the rain. I do not think you go wildly out of character here, you capture a lot of emotions and deal with them sympathetically. Who in their right mind would be happy to change places with him on that day? You get the impression he only becomes a "master of his fate" after a certain encounter in a London Hospital.

You also end it with hope, and touch on a thoughtful aspect of Holmes' value to Watson.

And sometimes, we all need a reminder about the stars, or the darkest hour before the dawn:-)

Killing me with angst. But well written and I believe that it's really not that OOC for Watson. War of any nature is hell, especially for the natural healers like he is.
