Reviews for Illusions of Victory
Taraisilwen chapter 26 . 3/17/2019
Just found this story and I couldn't resist reading it even though I saw the last update was in 2014. I almost wish I hadn't, because I really would have loved it if there where more.

I think this is the first story I've read where I can believe in Bella/Voldemort relationship. Not "believe in" like I think they have a great future, but something that I could see happening and the reasons behind it for both characters. I feel bad for Rodolphus though.
Although not so much when he chose to marry Narcissa instead. Yeah yeah, I know it's Voldemort fault, but right now I'm with Lucius *plotting murder*...

I do like the way you have portrayed Lucius and Narcissas relationship. The desperation they feel
and how even Andromeda and Narcissas parents feel sorry for them.
I never pictured Narcissa as the clueless trophy wife, and I think her actions (and Lucius') in the DH showed us that. Nor do I think Lucius considered himself superior to her (everybody else, yes, but not her). I hope they would have made an interesting storyline if you had continued with this story.

Heartbreaking to see what they did to Ted and Andromeda as well. Although very interesting to have her back with the Black again, against her will. I hope she and Dora would have been alright in the end.

I hope the other side eventually would have won. That perhaps some of Voldemorts followers would eventually have had enough and then turned on him.
Anyway, I'm following this story in case you begin writing again.
Purple rain chapter 26 . 1/27/2019
This is the only realistic scenario I can imagine that would justify Voldemort ever marrying someone. I find him IC and yet rather .. dry. I have read your other works and you can write him better than this by adding your ' personal touch ' to his character. Voldemort here is technically IC but he doesn't have that extra thing that makes him YOUR character and makes us as readers became attached to his character.
His relationship with Bellatrix also doesn't intrigue much cause it is very black and white . Of course Voldemort's no nonsense pragmatism and coldness should be preserved but in the books what drew me to this pairing is precisely that fact that thanks to Bellatrix we did witness Voldemort acting somewhat unusually and atypically in the books . He did treat her differently and I am not even talking about sex cause there obviously wasn't any sex involved in the books hehe. The only hint we have as far as the sexual element goes is them having a child and some suggestive moments/words .
I am talking about him showing a certain 'attachment ' to Bellatrix in certain moments that while not disinterested... wasn't totally pragmatic and utilitarian either . That's the middle ground one should aim to when writing about this pairing imo but I acknowledge that it is very difficult, subtle and the writer has to walk on eggshells . Rowling did it perfectly. A sense of measure, that's the key but it is easier said than done I know hahah . In general Voldemort's relationships were very devoid of nuances in canon . The only exceptions are Bellatrix and Nagini but understandably people struggle more with Bella because she was a human being and had a specific ( rather intimate) relationship with Voldemort. She is in the delicate position of ' the other ' while Nagini was an extension of Voldemort and a pet . However I do think that from their canon interactions to the hints that were thrown all through the last two books - there is enough material for an abusive, unhealthy yet complex and nuanced dynamic. I do think you could work a bit on that . On managing to transmit that idea to the readers that I personally got from the books . An abusive, distant and dominant Voldemort yet ... Bella's special status and his unique relationship with her being there as well.
Narcissa is hands down the best character in this story although she is not the main character . I never cared much for her personally and always favored Bellatrix in the books but here she takes the cake . Never cared much about her and Lucius's relationship either . I always found it way too conventional. Rich people have an arranged marriage and grow to love each other in a contained and healthy way . Way too conventional for my messed up self I admit XP .
I was way more attracted to the unusual and slightly amoral ' arrangement ' of Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Voldemort. I was way more attracted by the one of a kind relationship between Bella and her Mater .
Maybe it was also due to the fact that it was Voldemort's only rather positive and relatively close relationship with a fellow human being . Probably Voldemort's only relationship that went beyond the professional and his unsual excessive pragmatism . That made it so intriguing and worth exploring.
However here I find myself caring more for Lucius and Narcissa all of a sudden ahhaha . You have done such a great job with them . Still it seems you were just starting to develop the story and dynamics when the story was abandoned. Too bad :(
Thanks for sharing anyways !
Toraach chapter 10 . 12/16/2015
Voldi and his brutal policies. How stupid it is. I think of course that is an very interesting idea with the murdering of Ted Tonks as the first step to his fall from power.
Toraach chapter 8 . 12/16/2015
Excelent story, and I don't know what to say more, but that's great.
Guest chapter 26 . 4/6/2015
Thanks for updating! Looking forward to the next chapter. Can't wait to see how normal life is actually gonna go for bella and voldemort.
sheetah chapter 26 . 3/20/2015
I really like this and hope that you'll continue soon. Your writing style is really spot on as it is in your other stories too and I think that you manage to keep especially Voldemort in character really well. Keep it up!
Inkfire chapter 26 . 12/25/2014
Oh, an update :) And starting with the unhappy boys, too. It was rather nice seeing their reactions with their contrasts and common points—interesting to see that though one often thinks of the Malfoys as colder and sneakier, here it was Rodolphus who remained in control despite his anger and pain and Lucius who was boiling with rage and passion, nearly out of control. Well, the object of Lucius' anger, although it's misdirected, is also easier to reach whereas Rodolphus knows better than to rage outwardly against the Dark Lord. His only choice was indeed to resign himself. Still ;) It was so ironical, too, that Lucius blamed Rodolphus so much when in fact they pretty much shared the same fate. And there was another, even greater contrast between the two and Bella's passionate glee or the Dark Lord's utterly cold and impassive demeanour ;)

Lucius' part was my favourite of the chapter, I think—he was so boiling with rage and loss, like I said, and it was all the crueller as he was forced to hear the demeaning comments about Narcissa and to know that another man would get to touch her when he hadn't. He really came so close to losing control—and then there was their scene on the balcony, so dream-like indeed, with Narcissa looking ethereally beautiful and equally marked with grief as he was. The attraction and connection between them was very powerfully conveyed, the desperation too, how they were drawn to one another and wanted so terribly to be together. Loved how they repeated "I love you", Narcissa's attempts to resist, yet she needed him just as badly as he did her. Narcissa's uncertainty and inexperience as they got more and more intimate was very nicely portrayed—contrasting with Lucius, who couldn't help losing control and not being very gentle despite his deep tenderness for her, his lack of control and need were so great. All the Lucissa! And more contrast (!) between them, the harmony and care between them, and the Bellamort part with Voldemort's harshness—he was rough too, but for different reasons. ;) Although Bella is entirely submissive and only thinks of pleasing him—he still isn't satisfied with the direction of her thoughts and her obvious delight…

There are a few tidbits in the writing itself, I'll go into that in a PM ;) Cheers!
Pink Cashmere chapter 26 . 12/23/2014
I'm so glad you updated :D ( a nice mini present for your readers _ ) This chapter may be my favourite because it has some juicy Lucissa and some steamy Bellamort on it :p You made me feel sorry for both Rodolphus and Luciuss but it was Rod who once again ended up with the short end of the stick ( that poor poor man ). What worries me is that for the fisrt time in my life I want Bella to end up with Rod instead of Voldemort and it's pretty serious considering my OTP is Bellamort O.o * scratches head * . However I must say the Bella/Voldie scene was very intense and such a contrast from the Luciuss/ Cissa one , it was almost a love vs sex kind of thing although I must say I liked the last sentence a lot ( it was as though Voldie was allowing himself to enjoy the moment a bit as well or.. am I wrong ? ) I didn't understand why he was so mad at Bellatrix when she behaved properly and everything but I guess he is a bit conflicted considering the circumstances have changed ( no matter how slightly ) and he wants to have everything under control ( that's the key word :p ) Sorry for my long and stupid review and keep up the good work :))
Princeless chapter 26 . 12/23/2014
Oh, I can't find the words to describe how I'm glad that you updated this wonderfull fic! It's a very good present for Christmas! You are really talanted person, and I like all of you stories, but the idea of this is so... unusual, really fantastic. It is an AU, but all characters are so true (as if Rowling wrote them :) ).
I'm stuck on how you draw a parallel between Narcissa&Lucius and Bellatrix&DarkLord (their last scene is very hot!).
Can't wait for the next chapter! It is very intrigue and must be even more interesting.
Best regards!
Guest chapter 25 . 10/31/2014
So glad you updated! Voldemort seems like he's deliberately cold, probably to make a point. And wow, I know I should expect this but Bella's responses are so on point with exactly what voldemort wants to hear P, she's good at this.
Pink Cashmere chapter 25 . 10/31/2014
So glad you updated :))) Now will that bastard of Voldemort ever be kinder towards our poor Bella ? (spoil me a bit :p ) I can't wait for the next chapter and I wish you all the best xoxoxox
Inkfire chapter 25 . 10/29/2014
Yay, new chapter! :D Very nice! You didn't seem rusty, don't worry ;) Nice opening descriptions, and I loved your portrayal of Bella, how she hadn't been able to sleep and how amazing and surreal it all seemed to her, how she moved as though automatically. And of course the tribe of women all gathered to doll her up would annoy her to death, yet for her Lord's sake and to be the most beautiful bride for him, she went through with it. Didn't mean she would enjoy the process ;) I liked how she felt like the hunted prey in that case, quite ironical! And your Voldemort *would* approve of a traditional gown ;)

His POV was also very nice, so cold and vaguely annoyed, knowing Bella wouldn't delude herself about their relationship, yet also aware of her feelings to some extent and not wanting her to forget her place/knowing it made it harder to punish her. And clearly marriage was quite the alien prospect to him, nothing he would have wished to tie himself down with. Still, he would do what he had to to reach his goals. The interactions were nicely portrayed ;) Well done!

(You had a few typos but I'll get to that in a PM :))
