Diurnal Days chapter 1 . 2/2/2016 If I visit the Duxford area, I'll definitely check the Imperial War Museum out. I'm a sucker for museums. :D The idea of nations reincarnating with different personalities really is an interesting one, as almost every personification seems to have changed significantly over the course of the canon series. It would also explain why some personifications did dark things in the past that they would never do in the modern day segments. But losing someone you care about would be even more painful if said someone revived days later, only to end up hating you even after they regained their memories. Watching someone else in your loved one's body would be quite saddening, in my opinion. :C The trust and sweetness between America and England made my heart melt... but it also stirred up grief when England revived with a jerkass personality. I'm hoping that England eventually came to love (or at least care about) America, since there's several years of very close US-UK relations ahead of them. I can only hope (and imagine) the unwritten epilogue to this engaging one-shot. I like how the ending can be taken ambiguously. It isn't italicized or put in parentheses, but it also feels different to the rest of the fic. Whether it takes place before or after Arthur's death in Burma is up for interpretation, which can lead to the fic either becoming more bitter or more sweet. Personally, I believe that the last segment is a prequel to the events of the majority of the fic. I like my Libertea bittersweet with more bitter, thank you very much. ;) Usualky, I consume one-shots or one-shot collections as between-fic fodder. But this is a one-shot that feels like it's a window into an expansive universe of its own. The ground rules are laid down, a short but interesting narrative is told, and I found myself rooting for the characters throughout all 4,814 words. I actually felt the feels when I read this, and that's uncommon for a fic as short as this one. There's no filler that impedes the story, letting the plot get to the point more quickly, and the story is told masterfully through three segments that explain themselves quite well. The setting of Burma was well-used. It didn't feel shoehorned into the story, as the Spitfires did play a role in the narrative, and it was accurate, too. I fancy historical stories that take place in lesser known historical time periods or events. Usually, you seem to write fics that take place in either England, the U.S., or a nondescript battlefield, but this time you didn't shy away from a more unusual setting, and you pulled it off quite well, too. The heat, the nylon, the mention of real historical events... Wow. You truly wear a cloak of many colors. (Idk what I mean by that either. I guess the phrase just sounds cool, lol) Really, I don't have much else to say about this, except that I think this is the best usage of the one-shot format so far. The plot really works well as a few pages of story, and the universe is well-thought out enough to really pop out through several thousand words. I love how you expanded on concepts from previous fics here, btw. And the dog-tag thing? Hnngh. I must have more of that. Slightly bittersweet fluff for the win! :D Nylon being a portmanteau of "New York" and "London" is interesting to chew on. It also suits WWII-era USUK quite well. I doubt I have to explain why. (I'm going to reread Nylon to death someday. I like this that much. See you later, and I hope that the creative gods of inspiration strike you with another smashing fic idea/update!... or something. XD) |
AoiCherry chapter 1 . 3/16/2015 Wowowowow! I'm in love with your one-shot! :D And I adore the idea of Alfred and Arthur wearing each other's dogtags, along with their own; it's soooo cute! Plus, I'm so, so happy you mentioned Burma, since it's my home country and all, and I never see it mentioned in the Hetalia fanfictions I've read so far. _ Please keep writing Hetalia/USUK fanfics! You're such a talented author! |
Hannatude chapter 1 . 6/12/2014 HOLY GALLIFREY COUNTRIES ARE TIMELORDS. WHY DID THIS NOT OCCUR TO ME UNTIL NOW?! |
Guest chapter 1 . 1/28/2013 This was a brilliant and very insightful story. I loved it :) |
Samtastic Love chapter 1 . 9/21/2012 This is, without a doubt, one of the most heartbreaking usuk stories I've read. You've gained a new fan! |
Symphonyk chapter 1 . 7/19/2012 This is so beautiful, but also very sad that Arthur can love Alfred with one personality and be indifferent to him in the next. I have two questions about this story. At the end, when Alfred brought the nylon is that before Arthur is on his deathbed and dies in the beginning of the story? The other question is does new Arthur kill Alfred? |
Empress Vegah chapter 1 . 7/13/2012 Now I've read this again, it's ... I feel like crying. I'm actually crying over Alfred's lost Arthur, how they have been so sweet to each other before his Arthur died and has been replaced with that unfeeling personification, it's just... heartbreaking. Sad. It's facing death of a loved one and living with the memories... ohhh... But I love how smoothly you've incorporated your theories into the story and it's just so heartbreaking to think that it's really quite a miracle where the personalities of America and England can love each other at the same moment knowing that personifications die and be reborn with memories alone. Guuuuhhhhh. I love it when I cry over fics, and thank you for making me feel like this! QuQ TuT ;w; |
CacoPhoniA chapter 1 . 7/6/2012 That gave me chills, and the scary part is that I don't even know what they're from in this fic. Your writing style is to be envied; I know I do. I loved every bit of it, even if it was terribly sad. Your logic on all the countries switching personalities with death makes so much sense. It's a perfect explanation of why countries sometimes go from being peaceful to power-hungry and cruel. This was perfect. |
KDSFJIUDKL chapter 1 . 6/27/2012 For once, I'm okay with USUK. And it's rare that a fic does that to me. Everything about it was pretty darn good, from the just mushy enough love story, to the grim reality of death, to the execution of fictional elements, and the tragic(?) ending. The addition of a few Hetalia fandom theories/creative devices wasn't overbearing, but neither was the concentration on the characters. Overall, a well-balanced story. Blaklite |
FictionalSandbox chapter 1 . 6/26/2012 This is tragic. It raises some really interesting questions in my mind about identity and so forth, but sadly I have nothing to offer you by way of constructive criticism or expansion. I just want to say: 'well done'. You write so well. |
DLHKM chapter 1 . 6/19/2012 Brilliant! I am completely enamored with the idea portrayed here: it's most likely the most explanatory theory I have heard regarding the starkly contrasting actions of the characters at different times. This idea allows for all of the various actions of the nations over the course of time to coincide with actions that would seem out of character otherwise, and I love it! This was just awesome. Until next time! |
Igirisu1996 chapter 1 . 6/17/2012 In the third section, does the new arthur also love alfred, or is that just a flash back? |
ThisCouldTheoreticallyBeSparta chapter 1 . 6/11/2012 I absolutely love your style, you know. Adore it. I also love the incredible creativity you put into your fics. Half of the stuff you seem to come up with so effortlessly wouldn't come to me even in my wildest dreams. Like the object eating and the new personality everytime they die. I'll admit to just giving them a healing factor and being done with it. XD It must be hell, dying and becoming someone new every time, everything lost. And Alfred losing his Arthur and getting a new, rather shitty one... Poor thing. I'm sure they'll be able to find each other again, though (the Special Relationshipper in me is far too strong and optimistic). Wonderful, imaginative, disturbing story. |
fakiagirl chapter 1 . 6/10/2012 I really like the idea of them getting different personalities. It certainly fits historically, as you mentioned, and it makes sense since if you go with the theory that the nations are defined by their people, governments change all the time and the type people that make up a nation do seem to change too (maybe they only "reboot" to the correct personality after they die, or else change gradually?). Anyway, it's never occurred to me before and I find it very interesting. :) I suppose it wouldn't be USUK without some angst, hmm? I do like how sweet they were with each other, though. :) It was very cute. Structurally, I like that you gave us more of a look into their happy relationship so as to break our hearts even more, haha. :) I liked this story. Thanks for sharing! |
Lamashtar Two chapter 1 . 6/10/2012 The blood kind of reminds me of your Halloween story too. And the idea of nations changing every time they resurrect I've seen a few times, notably in the famous doujinshi From The New World With Love, where England realizes child!America will be a monster when he grows up, but can't kill him because he's afraid the new incarnation won't love him. I like the changing personalities. There is so much variation in one human's mind, visible over the course of their life and constantly changing opinions, how much more in the schizoid nations? One anti-British American commentator once compared anglophilia in the country to a virus that kept coming back. XP The Spitfires are fascinating. The one Top Gear episode where they had the old planes doing close flybys made even me feel patriotic! |
