This was possibly the saddest thing I've ever read in this fandom. It was perfect, especially the end. Because it's not always Eugene that gets to be the damsel in distress, and Gothel has some unplumbed depths herself. I love your bits with Pascal, and this was probably the most dangerous Eugene I've read so far. I loved it. Thanks for posting.

The moment in the movie that inspired this fic is one of my favorites, and you've explored the alternate ending to that scene quite well. The first time I read this story (I've read it a few times now, but I've been rather lazy about reviewing lately :/), I thought you'd killed Rapunzel. But it's definitely believable when she comes back to life-I think the shortness of that scene makes it really effective. (Other, less-skilled authors might have drawn that scene out and killed it with fluff.)

I /love/ the character of the old lady in the tavern-her voice is wonderful. The description of the tapestry/shroud is beautiful. And I like the ambiguity surrounding Gothel at the end-she seems to feel gut-wrenchingly awful for what she's done to Rapunzel, but the regret and grief might just come because the source of her life is gone and she knows she's rapidly dying.

So: very deep, very well-written.
