This is a solid idea for a story. I know the writing that you adapted this from, and you did well. You have amazing potential as a writer.

I suggest fleshing out the story more. There were several parts where the timing felt wierd because there wasn't much said. (ie. After three months, after four months, ect.) Adding this in will also help keep characters in character.

I know that if you went back through and made these changes you would improve your writing. With another round or two of editing and fleshing out, you can certainly make this a fanominal piece.
